Gary Ewing can't cope with Valene facing a major operation. Brother Bobby arrives from Dallas to offer support. ************************************* Click Below to SUBSCRIBE for More DALLAS ru-vid.com... / @dallas70
Bobby is the baby of his family but yet is the leader and the strongest of the four Ewing boys...mentally and physically. He could be tender as a lamb and brutal as a lion. Great, three-dimensional character.
One thing I liked about Bobby, he is a realist. When Jock died, JR went on a drinking and having pity parties and Bobby gave him a vocal swift kick in the ass.
I always loved the Scenes with Patrick Duffy and Ted Shackleford. They acted like they were really brothers. I would have loved for Barbara Bel Geddes (Miss Ellie) to have been on the show at that time. She could have told Gary about her own Battle with Breast Cancer. In the UK on The Soap Opera Hollyoaks they did a Storyline on how Tony Hutchinson played by Nick Pickard since the show debuted in 1995 had Testicular Cancer. They never did that on US Soaps.
Whew!!!! If I ever had to support someone at the hospital in the same situation as Gary, Bobby's words are what I would need to get through it. Awfully fine character here and we need much more of that.
The beauty of this show is that it allowed the actors to shine in their performances. The dramatic storylines were very well paced and handled more realistically than on “Dallas”. The audience would in time come to care about the characters almost as if they were real people. As much as I liked Dallas or Dynasty ,Knots Landing was unique!
I agree Knots Landing is an absolute classic and waching it today brings us back in time. I was only a toddler when my mum was hooked by this show, Im 39 today and still love it. Abby is my ultimate favourite. 🤍
Bobby was the youngest of the Ewing boys, but at the same time the most mature and well-rounded.. He had more leadership qualities than the other three.❤😊
So am I. Although Bobby like Jr was aware of Gary's weaknesses Bobby genuinely loved Gary as a brother unlike Jr. This situation needed tough love and Bobby's talk helped to transfer some of Bobby's own strength onto Gary which he badly needed not just for himself but for Val as well. Bobby Ewing is an excellent example of masculinity.
@@williamjones7247 But Gary stood up to JR on a few occasions. JR admitted to Abby that Gary was dangerous to him. And was capable of making his life miserable. So he said he was going to rely on Abby to keep Gary out of Dallas.
@@wurliewynd6308right 👍 and after season 4 that was reconcilable and noticed Gary stayed sober and built that backbone that Jr always accused him of not having.
When Ray found out he was a Ewing, his revised birthdate placed him between Gary’s and Bobby’s. Ray’s previous birth date was previously two years earlier, which would have made him older than Gary!
Great scene, great writing, great acting ... you have to dig deep in these shows' histories to see that both of these prime-time soap operas were very real, sincere family dramas before the onslaught of the campy mid-80s which forced every woman to dress as glamour pusses even for breakfast scenes and every story to be as sensational as it could be. Here we have two brothers who hit to the core of what it is to be not only family but also human.
Also Bobby got the "Lightbulb" Moment, about Gary because when he was played by David Ackroyd, and JR tried to set him up in Business, although it was bogus, Gary couldn't handle being a "Businessman" and he couldn't handle not having a Life without her. He knew he was a terrible Husband/Father but he never would have wanted this on her.
I agree, Gary is a needy whining, cry baby. And when you look at Valene's different partners they are all very similar, Danny, Ben and Gary all 3 are insecure and they all have the "hurt before being hurt" attitude. She sure would have been better off with a real man.
However Gary was the only one who still didn't live at home. Jr and bobby lived at home with mommy and daddy . Gary was the only Ewing who had his own life . I give him a lot of credit for that
@@jasonraczkowski6001 That was a good part of Gary's character. Unfortunately, Gary's demons got the best of him in California in many aspects. JR always wanted Southfork for himself, hence why he stayed. Bobby was the good son who felt a strong connection to Southfork. As for Gary, he hated life at Southfork and was the Black Sheep of the family
A lot of people forget or or they don't know but Gary Ewing used to beat Val... I don't ever remember them going over that on Knots Landing but it was part of his story line on Dallas.
They only mentioned it once. In the pilot, when Lucy told Pam. But they retconned a lot of things. In the pilot, it was stated that a 17 year old Gary got 15 year old Val pregnant, but later Val told Lucy she was a virgin until AFTER she married Gary.
@@williamjones7247 Gary did hit Valene in the eye and caused bruising at the end of season 1 of Knots Landing. But he was drunk at the time and it wasn’t really intentional.
Boy it's a "Bear" when your Little Brother has to come from Dallas, to Los Angeles to "Set You Straight" so to speak. In The Novel "Dallas" Written by Lee Raintree, even as Teenagers Bobby had this "toughness" that Gary didn't have.
With the addition of William Devane and Kevin Dobson in later seasons and with the severance of Knots Landing from Dallas the Ewing characters on KL became less pivotal leading to Joan Van Ark leaving the show. I think Ted Shackleford stayed for the money but the Gary Ewing character clearly took a back seat to Greg Sumner and Mack Makenzie towards the end of the series.
Joan was on the show for 13/14 seasons. She left to do a pilot for a sitcom on NBC that didn't get picked up and then returned to direct one episode in the final season and again for the series finale
It's true when they got back together they didn't have the big storylines like before, but it brought things full circle ( excuse the pun) back to the cul de sac where everyone's problems intersected, like the Mary Robeson plot.
Miss Ellie was a multi millionaire who did a lot of traveling. Gary was always her favorite son. Yet she never once visited him!? I mean for goodness sake its a 2 hour flight!? She could hire a private jet and be there in a couple of hours!?
To be fair, we don't know how many times she visited him off-screen. (Were any visits ever referenced in the series -- even with a throwaway line like "when Mama came for Christmas?") Though I agree it would have been great if she were on some episodes of Knots that viewers could see!
@@johnnotgalt2697 I never watched knots only Dallas. But there was never any reference in Dallas that she visited him He did visit her a few times tho in Dallas. Until the dream solution of brining bobby back and the crossover stopped. It made it worst cause miss Ellie and Clayton would do a lot of travelling together. Officially Garry never even met Clayton. They met once at Bobby funeral but of course that never happened cause it was Pam's dream!? Lol
@@donnn-sg4mk Thanks! Gary and Val were in the final episiode of the old series (again in a fantasy sequence, where JR sees what would have happened if he were never born). And they appeared in a few episodes of the TNT series a few years back
@@donnn-sg4mk I think Gary and Dusty (Clayton's adopted son/nephew) attended Miss Ellie's wedding to Clayton. However, the wedding occurred off-screen. It showed Bobby and J.R. escorting Miss Ellie out to the wedding, then cut to black. When the commercial was over, Bobby and J.R. returned to Ewing Oil with wedding cake for the secretaries.
He let his brother have it but underneath all of Bobby’s fussing, he loves his brother very much and loved the ranch just as much as he did but Bobby knew that he had to watch JR at Ewing Oil but he has learned to balance the two worlds!
brianws one of JR’s best lines! I have one brother who is a total asshole and I’ve used that line dozens of times to other family members and friends in front of my numb skull brother! Even our folks laugh! He gets so pissed off. He’s the youngest so it works perfectly! lol 😂
I wonder why Miss Ellie never visited Gary in California? Being her 'favorite' son, it seemed odd she never made the trip; yet, her and Clayton traveled to Jamaica, a trip such as that being much more rigorous than a trip to Southern California.
@@edwardmalone5257 Considering health issues Bel Geddes had during her run on Dallas, that makes sense. But, in the fiction of Dallas, it was peculiar to have Gary to be Miss Ellie's favorite, but somehow she could not get the gumption to visit him. And I say that since my narcissistic dad, whom always had the attitude of friends/family to VISIT HIM, at least he had the gumption to make travel to visit his adult daughter a thousand miles away in another state; and she was his least favorite among his three adult offspring.
Lucy did in the first season of knots ...but it was a bit silly that she did not again. And miss ellie never crossed over once!? It could had been that the actress refused to do it tho? I know Joan Collins and Linda Evans both refused to appear on the dynasty spin off the Colbys
Lol! "Mama" couldn't come because the producers didn't want to pay Barbara BelGedes. As far as the character of Gary Ewing is concerned; it has always been difficult to believe such a thing could exist.
It can exist, I lived across the street from this guy a few years ago, that was from a very wealthy family, they were very well known in Dallas where I live. I became friends with him, and he was an alcoholic, (recovering) and I think he had been into drugs in his younger years. Very nice guy, but sort of a loser. His parents had bought him the house, I think so he would have a nice place to live, they would know where he was, and to sort of stay away from the family. My street was more middle class, like the Knots Landing cul de sac, and it was funny, I always knew when his Daddy came to visit, he drove a Bentley. This guy's father was part owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team and was in oil exploration. His wife was blonde and a real hick from the sticks. lol...It was funny, yet sad. I never said this to their face, but my wife and I used to refer to them as Gary and Val Ewing. lol....Several times his older brother came over, driving a Ferrari Testarossa. I could always tell when my neighbor was off the wagon, because that's when the family would show up. One of the few times they did.
I never understood why JR Ewing hated Gary so much as he was all about “The Ewing’s”....and why he had Lucy more or less kidnapped from Val? Can someone elaborate please?
It was because deep down JR feared Gary the most, not only because he was Miss Ellie's favorite child, but he probably knew that if Gary had the same personality he had but with just an ounce of the Ewing's backbone and will, that he would have had it all, even Jock would be impressed and proud. Therefore Gary was always the brother JR feared most and wanted him out of Southfork and out of his hair.
I think he hated Gary because he was different. In one episode he said that he didn't like Gary because he wrote poetry. He was saying that he was soft, not a real Ewing. And Jock didn't respect Gary. So, that also was good enough for JR. At least JR could be Number 2 in Jocks eyes.
@@dansby37 why would Jock prefer Bobby over JR though? JR made that family billionaires and Ewing Oil the biggest independent company in the state. Plus JR was the oldest son. Dallas was always unrealistic in that regard.
@@stevienightheat1 Not really, sometimes parents favor children whose personality almost matches theirs, Bobby was the perfect mix of Jock and Miss Ellie personalities, they both held him in great esteem because of that, though Gary was definitely Miss Ellie's favorite and while JR seemed to be Jock's favorite, it really was a close call between him and Bobby in that regard hence why the two always clashed.
No. It is an episode of Knots Landing. The second of 3 episodes to feature Patrick Duffy guesting as Bobby Ewing. Larry Hagman played JR Ewing in 5 episodes of Knots Landing. Lucy, Kristin and Baby Christopher each did one episode of Knots Landing.
If Bobby was my husband in this clip I was going through breast cancer needed surgery I would want him to be strong for us no matter the outcome we have a commitment to each other, I had my surgery the doctor came out to talk to Bobby saying Liane did great she in the recovery room now he says to the doctor can I see her now he says yes u can, Bobby says to the doctor did you get all the cancer from her breast doctor says yes she going to have to see me once a month for a while, he says that’s ok u saved my wife’s life. Bobby came in the recovery room to see me I look at him saying oh Bobby I am so glad to see you he says honey how are you feeling? I say ok why did this happen to me feel like I was being punished for something I start crying, Bobby says liane honey you didn’t do anything wrong I am so lucky that I have my beautiful wife with me and our daughter has her mommy, I ask him how is Kayla, Bobby says she is doing fine momma and Clayton are taking care of her today while I am here with you, he gives me a hug and kiss says Liane Ewing u are a fighter.I say to Bobby I am so lucky to have you as my husband and father to our beautiful daughter Kayla, he holds me in his arms saying Liane I am lucky to have you as my wife and mother to our daughter Kayla. We have a great relationship and a child together. He hugs me tight and gives me another kiss saying he can’t wait until I come home from the hospital to be with him and our daughter at Southfork.
I'll give it to all of you saying Bobby was good but had it not been for j.r things would have turned out so much more different. J.r did alot of selfish moves but most of what he did was for the family and Ewing oil
Because Gary was being a cry baby and the Ewings thought he would either fall off the wagon or abandon Val. Bobby told him to stand up and be strong for his sick wife
@@radrobd123 By today's standards it would be known as "Tough Love". When I see this Episode it reminds me of when George Hays tells his Protege Mike Bauer an up and coming Lawyer to get his stuff together when his Wife Julie was about to give birth to his Daughter Hope. It was in the 1960's.
@@J_Ru31352 LOL. Even in the final episode of Dallas, when JR dreamed of what like would have been like if he had never been born, Gary lost Ewing Oil due to bad business.
@@radrobd123 Damn Right, Gary was never fit to carry the Ewings legacy of Dallas with or without JR's influence, causing Jock to kill himself, and Miss Ellie to die of a broken heart over losing Jock... Smh... Gary was just plain pitiful.
Gary was a tool and was weak minded but he was pretty muscular and was offen working out during the middle years of the series. Like Bobby he could also fight and in a fist fight he's kick JR's ass easy.
@@radrobd123 No. My memory of that series finally (finale, sorry spelling correctly just hit me as I reread what I wrote.😉), Gary was a highly successful plastic surgeon who was just as sexually active as JR was only single not married.
Damn this show was awful. I remember growing up family members would watch this and I fucking hated it as a kid. Now looking back I can see why and for good reason this was a despicable show.
