Song got a lot of airplay when it came out on Chicago pop radio around 1963. Meant a lot to me growing up. Great arrangement and guitar. Heartfelt and soulful singing. Classic. Had relatives and family in the service that related to it.
Grandfather's are the best. My grandfather passed away in 1969. I was 11 years old. The one gift he gave me still lives in my heart. He introduced me to country music. Still today real country music is still alive in my home.
Sorry for your loss. The loss Of a Mother is about the worst it gets. I lost my Mom Dec. 19 2019 . She always loved us all getting together for Christmas. Didn't make it that time. I miss her so much. Dad died a couple years before. They were in their mid nineties. God bless you and yours.
@roddycreswell8613 he's saying thanks Bob Dylan because it's the first song Bob Dylan mentions in his book the philosophy of song that's what brought me here too...🙃
My grandma was ecstatic she could find this music on RU-vid, I remember her wondering if this was to be found anywhere and I found it here on RU-vid and played it and she asked to play it again! She recalls leaving her hometown and her love (my grandpa who she’d marry later) and this song played on the radio station and she cried and cried! It Worked out in the end and they just had their 50th anniversary this May.
This takes me back 25 years to the night my Viet Vet husband died - we played it for him in the hours before he died. It touches me just as much now as it did that night. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I hadn't heard this song in awhile but it came up on my SiriusXM while driving across Arizona. Such a great song! I definitely like the classic country sound. The arrangements, lyrics and "pure clean sound" of the singers voices. Great music!

AMEN to that, cleanliness. That good 'ol sound of country music transiting from old style to new sounds in modern country & western music was the true ticket to a sound that was real heart, soul, and purity that turned this style music from plain entertainment to a much higher form of art. We are truly blessed to be able to hear it and deeply ENJOY it as well. 💫
I was born in 1964 and have heard Bobby Bare's name all my life, remember my dad mentioning him. When I listened to this it was familiar, but I had never given it my full attention until now. I grew up with rock'n'roll and am picky about country, but this is exactly the kind I like. Honest emotion. Thank you, Mr. Dylan, for the suggestion.
This is the first song analyzed by Bob Dylan in his book "The Philosophy of Modern Song." I hadn't heard of it, so I came hear to listen. I think many people will visit this site for the same reason. @@jodywilke4642

When I was about three I'd throw tantrums crying and shouting "I want to go home" and my dad would laugh when this song would come on. He'd say "that's Michaels song" lol... good memories.

I once had a dream that I was actually singing this song on stage, I had 3 others who were singing with me and a piano player who played the accompaniment who also sang along to the chorus parts.
Here is what I have seen on this: Quote from (Bobby) Bare from the Toledo Free Press (TFP) web site. TFP: Who came up with that twangy guitar intro for “Detroit City? Bare: That came from the demo of that record. Billy Grammar recorded it, and that riff was on acoustic guitar. I heard that on the radio driving down Sunset Boulevard, and I thought, “That's the greatest song I've ever heard in my whole life.” I stopped the car to listen to it, and as soon as I got back to Nashville, I recorded it. Boots Randolph and Charlie McCoy played that intro on electric guitars.

I am a 61 year old latino. I don't like the music of today. Love old country music. (before 75) Buck Owens,Johnny Cash ,Marty Robbins The Carter Family, Conway Twitty ,Loretta Lynn and Bobby Bare. And more.

This could be the story of the my mother's brothers - during the 20s and 30s, they all left Kentucky for De-troit City, made more money than they could imagine and ended up alcoholics. "By day I make the cars and by night I make the bars."
