Those familiar with the easy listening music of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra will recognize the cornet of the magnificant player, Bobby Hackett. He was among the best cornet and trumpet players ever, Here he plays the 1944 composition of Johnny Mercer over video of an unknown marionetta. Bobby is accompanyed by Johnny Seng on Wurlitzer organ. This selection is from the album, "The Most Beautiful Horn In the World."

I picked up a disc from Amazon, called "Music Til' Dawn", on this cut, Glenn Osser wasarranger. Mitch Miller had a hand in this also. I had looked for these particular recordings for 40 years, and finally ran across them a couple of back. What a gorgeous sound, the blending of the organ & cornet.JUST BEAUTIFUL!

Bobby Hackett's trumpet sound was unmatched. No one has produced the type of tune and timber as Bobby did. Ray Anthony comes very close but that's it. I have both Jacky Gleason's CD's staring Bobby Hacktt. Jackie loved trumpet, but there were very few trumpeters that could satisfy his taste, Buddy surly did that.

Bobby played mostly cornet, not trumpet. But I think that one other person did come very very close (that's why Jackie Gleason used him). It was Pee Wee Erwin. Check him out on Jackie Gleason's album, "For Lovers Only". On the song, "Hello Dolly", he phrases a lot like Bobby (maybe Jackie asked him to emulate him)? Anyway.....IT'S ALL GOOD STUFF:)

Tonal quality is great with Bobby Hackett and the 'hitching' with Gleason' s orchestra was masterful.. Another great one of our era is Phillip Smith. The beauty of his horn is simply unmatched. I have always thought that you can "hear" the soul of a brass player through their tonal expression.

I cherish my (E) copy of this rare jewel too! I cannot figure out how such a classic lp has not been released by Collectables or Collector's Choice who both seem to have a monster Columbia catalog, which of course encluded Epic. Hackett had one of the smoothest horn styles and Johnny Seng was poorly recognized for his key part in this superb LP. I saw Johnny performat the Radio City Music Hall and it was one of my favorite experiences.

Hi Jan good to hear from you. I n the 1950's I wasn't always fond of that style of trumpet or cornet playing, Dizzy and Conte Candoli were my favorites. But an RAF friend made me listen to Louis, Yank Lawson, and then Bobby with Satchmo. Later he was over here in England with Tony Bennett and I felt he was like a chameleon, in that he seemed to make subtle style changes to match who he was playing with. A very clever man, well respected, and as a musician you can't ask for better than that. .

Ernie, your father has always been my favorite ballad player on trumpet /cornet. He was playing the Margate in Laconia, NH the whole summer of '69 ( tell me if I'm wrong). I've been kicking myself all these years for not getting over to see him, but I was so busy working on my cottage. He was super on jazz as well.

Jan Believe it or not I have a mint condition Mahavishnu Orchestra album, "Birds Of Fire". I bought it a Cymbaline Records in Santa Cruz in 1973! Love that stuff. Bobby Hackett is the best there ever was...bar none. I first heard him in the early 1960's when I bought three Jackie Gleason's Orchestra albums for "mood music" Worked wonders with the chicks.

I've always loved this song and Michael Buble did a smashing version a few years ago. But there's only two words to describe this" Bloody Beautiful". Bobby played that iconic trumpet solo on Glen Miller's "String of Pearls" and apparently told the story that he was pretty drunk at the time. No problem talent will out..
