I am on a constant quest for space-saving -- without giving up too much comfort -- when camping in my 4Runner.
When I first heard about drawer-style fridges, Bodega Cooler was kind enough to hook me up with one to try out. I may have been convinced to raise my bed platform just a bit, in order to accommodate it.

This is the cot that fits in the 4Runner, if you hook the front leg over the folded rear seat and move the driver’s seat up some. It does go all the way against the wall, because the center leg hits the wheel hump.

Thanks for sharing this product. I have the Dometic drawer 31qt fridge for 3yrs because that's all there was then. This product addresses my biggest con of the Dometic, the control box is inside the fridge compartment and wasted space. While both dimensions are exactly the same, the space behind the Dometic control box is unusable, thus the additional ~2qt in the Bodega product. Additionally, although Dometic has been around since 1920, they have missed the advancements of technology of placing not only the controls on the outside, as Bodega has done but also missed the digital thermometer in the Bodega versus the analog (guessing) knob Dometic uses with the control box inside. The latter lack of vision from Dometic is that I have to put a thermometer inside the fridge to know the inside temperature where Bodega has it on the outside. The average consumer would see these failures from Dometic as nonissues; however, the failed legacy brand examples are too many for Dometic to miss this, to me, obvious improvement. While Kodak developed digital photography, Kodak did not see a consumer use for it over a hardcopy photograph. Bell did not see the need for cellular phones. Palm could not figure out how to combine the PDA and cell phone into one product. And the list goes on and on. Pardon the dissertation. And thank you for showcasing this product. While my Dometic drawer has been a game changer in my 4Runner, hands down, this Bodega product is a much better choice of equal price and ~2 additional quarts of usable space.

Did you ride a big wheel when you were a kid? That trunk space is what started me off on my "overlanding" adventures. Thanks to Mom for making me peanut butter n jelly sandwiches! :)

I did not have one myself, but I remember the commercials -- even the bit about the trunk. Looking back, I wonder, what would a kid need to haul around? Apparently, the answer is PB&Js!

I almost bought a powered little fridge for my suv camper, but then I went for a Yeti 35. Traveling full-time with a dog I knew a fridge would suck dirt & fur into its vents & eventually break down. Plus, I didn't want to stress about powering it. Freezing 2 Nalgene bottles of water & putting it in my Yeti keeps food cold for a week. Imo, these roto mold coolers are a solid choice for travelers who don't want to buy & haul around 1-3 heavy & expensive battery banks to power an already pricey fridge.

I'm a big believer in using whatever is best for you and suits your particular needs. For me, even a quality cooler just cannot compete with our heat. The 12v fridges have gotten pretty efficient, so that I can generally run one with my small-ish powerbank for a few days with minimal draw. But I get it - simplicity is always best!

@paulas_lens A super thick walled cooler can take heat, & most sit in an air conditioned vehicle anyway. And, serious nomads & campers get the hell out of low elevation heat, so a good low maintenance cooler IS a solid choice. It will never break & spoil ur food.

Love the idea of a drawer fridge for my 4R too, but concerned about losing headroom. I agree with you on not wanting to make your rig a full time camping vehicle. I did however remove the bottom rear seat cushion only so I could avoid having the top of my cot high enough to clear the top of the folded up seat. Plus it allowed more adjustability of cot height😊. Rear seat cushion is only held by 2 bolts and I was surprised at how light weight it was. Just thought for you to consider for optimal head room.

Thanks for the intel! I'm kinda getting used to sitting on the floor 😂 But as we start getting deeper into lonegr, more overlanding-style trips, my plans may change. 😏

Interesting. I like that it fits behind rear seating. Once you start being able to roll around with the fridge like that, it’s even nice for a little bit of groceries. You don’t need to rush home if you purchased frozen or cold items.

🤣🤣🤣 I really have gotten used to riding around with it in there. I just keep the plug strung to the front, so I can pop it into the cigarette lighter, before heading out on any cold food errands.

What a great refrigerator!! I’m still using an Esky because my current Ecoflow power station isn’t quite enough to run a refrigerator (yet), but give me time… :-D And I like the way you sometimes camp at home to try things out. With 5 teenage/young adult children, I might occasionally tell them I’m going away and stealth camp in my garage overnight! :-D

Interesting, it’s similar in price to the Dometic drawer fridge that is only 21 L, which used to be THE only drawer fridge on the market. My quick search showed lots of options these days. If you have one of those little fridge temperature gauges I’d be curious as to how it does when you go out in hot weather. Also, I wonder if you found some wire baskets that fit (my 12v came with one) I’ll bet you could preload the basket(s) in the kitchen, then carry out to place in drawer.
@ShoestringMartha

Great idea, regarding the basket! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a relatively short one. We'll see how she does with the heat, the next camping trip. 🤞

Thank you! After trying it out for a few times now, I am committed to the drawer fridge / cot set up. While I don't love being higher up, the additional floor space makes it worthwhile.

When your temporary bed was placed on the unit could you feel the fridge running through your sleep padding? Usually when I sleep in my 4runner I can hear the hum of the fridge run but it's just a little white noise which I actually like. I think if I felt the fridge turn on it might wake me up. Thanks for the video!
@ShoestringMartha
@ShoestringMartha 4 месяца назад
Welcome! With the temporary set up, I did not feel it at all. I think because the compressor part was inside the milk crate - so there was about 3 inches of space between the machinery and the platform. The compressor box is a few inches shorter than the main box that holds the food, so it would probably be difficult to make direct contact with a platform.

Did you have to modify your cot in any way, or does it just fit that perfectly? I really like how it fits in there, but I’m concerned about the width of the cot. I may need something a little wider.
@ShoestringMartha
@ShoestringMartha Месяц назад
It fit! I did hook the front leg over the folded rear seat. It was a tight squeeze, but made it. The next time, I collapsed the front leg, and let it rest on top of the folded rear seat, rather than hooking it over. Most recently, I removed both front and back legs entirely. It now rests on the rear seat in the front, and the fridge in the back. I haven't shown it in a video yet, but recently posted a pic on my instagram.

@@ShoestringMartha that’s awesome! I think I’m going to order one and try it out. This is a cheap mod to where I don’t have to remove the seat bottoms to fit. I slept in my 4Runner for the first time last weekend up on the Rim and I had to sleep diagonally in order to fit because I didn’t remove the seat bottoms. Thanks for the reply. 🤘
