Former FBI agent and body language expert Joe Navarro sits down with WIRED to talk about the non-verbal language of appearance. The ornate nature of how we attend to our bodies has grand significance throughout humankind. The way we present ourselves, across cultures, continues to be of massive importance. But, just how important is appearance to things like success, money and power?

All of the city's business and community leaders were invited. I noticed right away that the vast majority of the men were taller than me and I'd say the average height of the men was 6'1"-6'2". 2. I can off the top of my head think of four college buddies who are 6'4" or taller. They were average students and all four of them are very successful. 3. The income inequality between very attractive people and average looking people is higher than the income inequality between whites and minority groups.

In highschool I didn't have the best hygiene, even relative to most of my peers. I was always pretty nerdy, but I would always try to stand up for myself when picked on (not always effectively). I always tried to give every new kid the best chance, and tried to be respectful (though my understanding of what that meant was not always accurate). I wasn't shy about my enjoyment of most academics, and I was good at some I didn't enjoy (such as math) and enjoyed some that I wasn't good at (art, woodshop). Despite my poor presentation, my senior yearbook I was one of three students my peers considered "most likely to be president." Fast forward in life, most people wouldn't consider me very successful. Academic skills that seemed nice on the surface I was not able to capitalize on due to a lack of other skills. Life is odd that way.

Regarding the clothes, I think it is not just about being 'well dressed', but about being appropriately dressed for the occasion. :) Grooming is definitely important always. But if you wore full black tie on a regular workday, people would probably give you strange looks. What a suit does for men, and a Galla dress for women, is it enhance their masculine or feminine physique. But it also create an appearance of good posture, even if you don't have it in reality. Good posture also signals self worth and confidence, and projecting 'I am a person of high value' to other people. This is actually the main reason why people find suits attractive; it is not just that it shows money/power/success (someone with great skills/mental energy, who have a lot to contribute with, and would be a good connection to have). It is that it enhances all the biologically most attractive things about men. (and the dress does the same for women). When you notice, being 'well dressed' today means to have selected garments of good quality, a look that is aesthetically pleasing and enhances your best features, as well as being well groomed and display good posture/confidence. Good grooming is what makes or breaks the look - not the clothing alone. Additionally, while past societies had a lot of focus on money and power, modern society place more and more value on character instead. Therefore, it becomes a form of power statement to wear baggy clothes and 'not caring' about appearance. The key here is to be well groomed and have good posture, even if you are very casually dressed. People who wear 'power clothes' are more often well groomed and displays confidence, than people who don't. But the 'power' of the suit is more how it makes the man feel about himself, not so much how formal it is. :)

@MaryRae I can't give you a direct answer, but I had a similar high school experience and I went to 3 high schools and acted differently at all of them. At one, I would act like you did and mind my own business. I was weird, I would paint my nails crazy, wear too much make up, dress gothic one day and 80s neon the next. I was also nice to everyone and everyone wanted me to sit with them at lunch and I basically ran that school for no reason. At the 2nd school I tried to fit in, dressed casual and preppy and tried to make friends. I had way less attention that way and most "cliques" didn't care for me. At the 3rd school I made a conscious effort to dress casual AND keep to myself. Everyone AGAIN wanted to be my friend, know my story, and figure me out. It seemed like it was more a personality thing for me than what I wore so maybe it was actually the same for you! And then there is the variable that is other people. Highschoolers aren't very predictable 😆

As someone who is a little over 6'6'' yes I have seen taller people do well in sports, with women and have been offered more leadership roles. However I have seen shorter men try harder and have more grit in not giving up. But as the Stoics of Stoicism say, you should only think about what is in your control. So for the many times I wished I was shorter when I banged my head in doorway, was on an uncomfortable plane flight, could not find clothes that fit me or have people not want to speak with me because of the large height differential, I refused to even think a thought I had no control over.

I do not know about the height dividend because that can partially be answered by parent income and thus diet. But, I mean - overall, we can also say the way one dress is also linked to one socio-economic class and we also have pretty good understand of upward mobility in different countries. In fact, the way you dress is a indeed a class mechanics that gives message to others who is in and who is not in a group. That being said, I do think that better looking folks, and those with above average height probably do better than those who are not...

True that. Better access to nutrition and recreation leads to children growing taller and being more fit. Financial stability can allow for nicer clothes and the purchase of other status symbols. But in the end, it is your character, your beliefs, values, intelligence, and charisma which will help you excel in life.

@puccarts
@puccarts Год назад
Probably the same tbh.. as a taller woman, you'd get noticed more. Even petite models are over 5'6" (meanwhile the definition of petite clothing is for 5'4" and under). I strongly believe that someone my height 4'11" does get taken less seriously, but I don't have any research data to prove it, only anecdotal experience.

@puccarts Год назад
@@krissy278 Well your experience seems to align with my viewpoint. I really wonder if we started letting more petite/short models into the industry as standard, if this would slowly begin to change world perspectives. Would be nice to not be judged simply on height. Normally a taller women are seen as masculine by men so men go for shorter women. But being tall as a woman makes you more eligible to being a model. It makes you look more like a model but in terms of dating I know a lot of tall women who get shunned because men don’t want someone taller than them generally.

Most times, outer beauty means confidence or a sense of false bravado. But when someone is not attractive to society's standards, but has an overload of self-confidence in themselves irrespective of others opinion, they will stand out of the crowd enough to make an attractive person with a false confidence loose that "confidence".

This is interesting but unfortunately really only covers a certain type of 'success'. Certain type of appearances (which fits within someone's stereotype of 'that type of person' should look) is the 'easier' and fastest method to gain trust and favourability. So, actually, this is an essay on how appearance affects trust and favorability than it is about success as 'success' is subjective.
