I am beginning to think the business world discriminates against shy, introverted people. Interviewers should be required to read Susan Cain's book "Quiet". In contrast with Asian companies, the USA think of introverts (which comprise about 50% of the population) as second-class citizens. We are expected to project a commanding, masculine energy... She mentions dropping the voice for example and not giving a weak handshake. People are forced to become actors just in order to get a job...the most eloquent person wins...qualifications are second best. God, I'm sick of this crap. Everything is so fake these days.

Think about it. Why would a business place want to hire a shy, introverted person? Business is a team effort, and if a person likes to keep to themselves and avoid the team, they have nothing to offer the business, their coworkers, or themselves. Sorry to say, but shy, introverted people have no place in a team effort.
@jessicablack5805
@jessicablack5805 9 лет назад
Not all introverts avoid teamwork. Also, there are studies suggesting that teamwork is not as effective as working individually as relayed in the book. It is known that introverts tend to make better decisions because they think more before they act. They may not talk the talk, but they can still walk the walk if others give them the chance.

Jessica Black Yup, there are studies. Also, the steady eye contact thing might need a little more clarification. I've come to realize, it makes certain interviewers (inexperienced ones) uncomfortable too.
@jessicablack5805

***** I completely agree. I think introverts are more of an asset to the company than many people would like to admit. I can't imagine any organization functioning properly where everyone is an extrovert...people would probably be talking over each other all the time or not getting their work done because they want to socialize. Introverts can listen to an idea and provide support to the people who want to do the talking. It's too tiresome to have to be inauthentic for the majority of the day. We need both types of people, not just in business, but in the world in general. Also, introverts are good at pretending to be extroverted when they need to (if required for a job), so I think extroverts don't realize how many of us are actually introverted. I've had some people tell me that they had no clue I was introverted.
@kisukeurahara4569
@kisukeurahara4569 9 лет назад
Being shy does not mean being introverted; make sure you do not get those qualities mixed up. I am introverted however I don't mind, if like, teamwork and other communication activities. It's also true that many introverts are major assets and don't say they're second class, it's nature. I know how you feel, but if you practice these arts more, it doesn't mean that you'll transform into an extrovert, it means that you're trying hard to adapt to the job you want to do while being yourself. In fact many extroverts want to be able to use introvert-skills and equally many introverts want to be able to use extrovert-skills as well. All of these skills will come to you naturally in a more profound manner, than if you try in such a way that you actually achieve an abnormal affect, if you let your nervousness go, and let your desire (a good thing to want!) to engage in a natural reform. Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. - Thomas A. Edison So we can't just lose face because of who we are - if we believe hard enough, we will be the stronger person that the others aren't and not just because we need to, but because we want to. "We won't know what's gonna happen until we try, that's the whole point in trying right?" - Suikoden Tierkreis (Video Game).

Funny isn't it? 400 years ago, you would pop down to the local market, and wait until a farmer or a builder comes along and hires you for the day. Now you've gotta dress up in a perfectly-tailored suit, deliver the most flawless handshake physically possible, never let your voice break even once whilst answering all the dumb generic interview questions - only for all that effort to be rendered totally worthless when the manager's brother's son's best mate needs a job, and is automatically given it due to his connection.

I've always wondered why people with Autism struggle so much when it comes to finding employment, and often are only spoken of as working minimum wage jobs, despite having a degree, and now it makes so much sense. Almost everything she mentioned would exclude someone with Autism, who has trouble maintaining eye contact, or sitting in place from a position at that company. It's sad to see this blatant, and almost celebrated discrimination.

One time I was asked by an interviewer if I had a problem with working with younger workers than me, and it was the first time I was asked that really. I had always worked with younger and older well. Anyway, I said I was fine with working around younger people or being told what to do by them, and I thought about that prejudice question a few times. In the end I didn't get the job. Yet I landed one else were, and the age question wasn't asked there.

Perhaps if I had a MBA this might work, but what if you are applying at the mall for a crap job and your level of education intimidates the hiring manager?
@blaze2672
@blaze2672 10 лет назад
then don't use your education at a place where the company doesn't appreciate your knowledge. I know it seems hard in a "down" market, but some of the most successful startups were during recessions when overhead and manufacturing costs were lower. There's always something you can do with an education or flexibility (flexibility is one of the three currencies along with resources like money, and along with time, so take into account what you want and what you're willing to trade, and what is the first thing you'd be able to take off your list of goals right away.) Send me a message if you'd like to talk success. I'm building a social club for fun of people who'd like to change the world.

+heavymechanic2 Nearly ten years ago: I was called for an interview at Lowes (Building Supply) and was taken into a room with 30 other people and put on a computer for a second opportunity to complete a Personality Assessment (WTF?) Apparently the hiring decisions made today are based upon an individuals response to a profile dictated by the HR office and not their skill set. This is the reason lots of companies hire people that are dumb-as-a-rock.

One day we will look back and feel ashamed of ourselves for thinking how we place our shoulders, how firm a handshake is etc. determines how others should perceive us. Communication >should< be 99% the words you chose to place together. Humanity loves games rather than facts. "Play social games is more valuable input than saying what you intend."
@fruitygarlic3601
@fruitygarlic3601 3 года назад
If you want to ignore the reality that this is how humans have and will always judge each other, go ahead. Handshakes will be replaced with something else, and this will continue. I don't know about you but I want to eat, and accomodating others in a minor way won't hurt.

This is beside the point. Now that the economy has reduced the total number of jobs available, more people are looking for tips and tricks to help them get ahead, to be the one who rises to the top out of the hundred who are fighting for that one job. If more jobs were available, we would not be worrying ourselves for little things to get an edge, and the employers would not be looking for trifling little things as excuses to disqualify amongst a huge candidate pool that is adequately qualified.

From some younger years of experience with being in interviews, older women that interviewed me cared more during the moment of interaction than the younger ladies did. I would give the younger lady my job experience which matched what I applied for, and the older ladies seemed more mature with handling body English and the job situations, and the younger ladies kept changing subject without care, they didn't seem to care to get to know me really. Or my face wasn't attractive enough. I heard recently that sometimes ladies want a cute guy to talk to at a job rather than to listen to you with the jobs your experience with. Older ladies 30 years and up tend to be more structured to see who fit for the job position in my opinion. Nothing against younger ladies, there wonderful to socialize with, but in interviews they seem to just rush through the question's without feel of personality. I've noticed some retail stores some young associates are rather shy around customers rather than getting to know them a bit.

Janicke's perception about the directions that a person looks while listening to another’s words perpetuates the “belief” that if one does NOT keep eye contact with the speaker it means the listener is NOT paying attention & therefore would not be a good choice for employment.. Her recommendation is for job seekers to act like the “Auditory” learners/communicators in a job interview. Yes, one can do that however, once a person is hired, if they are to work closely with the interviewer/employer and the employee goes back to memorizing what is being said by Visually processing verbal content (which means looking away while listening) then the beginning of discord will follow & grow between the two workers for the reason that the employer now feels that the new hire is not listening /paying attention. For more information on interpersonal communication I recommend looking up Eye Accessing Cues that are found in some of the NLP ( Neuro Linguistic Programming ) books that have been published in the last 30+ years or so. Then one can learn about repore skills, better understand their own communication style, how to better understand others, working to create a Win-Win outcome for both people involved and beyond one on one relating. As “heavy mechanic 2,” said, “what if you are applying at the mall for a crap job & your level of education intimidates the hiring manager ?"

One thing that drives me up the wall is when people play with various body parts like ears, hair, beards, etcetera... Its OK to use your hands, but quit playing with your self. Hand wringing is bad too. If your hands need something to do, use them to express thoughts and enhance the conversation, but never play with yourself during a conversation.

I also research the company before I apply, so I know exactly what company is calling me and even where they are located. Bottom line: People in HR are silly and give disproportionate importance to things that are unimportant for the job. You are expected to be completely fake with them, then show your true personality and skills when you get to the next stage of the interview where you talk to someone who actually knows what the job is about.

Like mentioned, always make eye contact and smile. Your potential employer will not only be looking at your qualifications, but also evaluating whether or not you’ll fit into the company culture. Be confident and most importantly show your excitement for the job. Don’t let your body language tell a different story than your resume. -Ali

These standards work for America maybe, I'm not sure if they work full in East Europe. Not to say about Asia, Africa, Arabia where the interview rules are quite different. But anyhow the attitude and psychological preparation for the interview are crucial.
