Not sure how proud you should be of how bad things got before the Air Force stepped in to save that aircraft.

I remember driving through the Memphis area back in the 1980’s and seeing the Belle on Mud Island on display. She was in such a sad state that the USAF repossessed her. Then in the early 2000’s I went to the Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton and was lucky to get a tour through the restoration shops. Sitting there in all her pointless glory was the Bell,minus wings but the Memphis Bell still painted on her nose. Several years later I made the trip back and she was mainly put back together but still pointless. I haven’t been able to go back but have been astonished at the quality of the restoration the staff there have done. She looks BEAUTIFUL! Now they are starting the restoration on the Swoose,an early B-17 that had been stored at the back of the hangar when I was there waiting its turn to be brought back to life.

I would also like to add as a child growing up in the 60s seeing the plane at the old Memphis armory to see it now restored is just truly awesome it's amazing what these young men endured I have also had the pleasure of touring another B-17 on the inside what an awesome airplane

It must have been awe inspiring. I just wish that she had been kept in better shape during her time in Memphis. Glad to have her back.

My father was a nose gunner in a B24. I wish there was more coverage about that history.

I do have a walk around video of the B-24 in the playlist. There were many different types of aircraft involved in WW2 but only a few get the kudos even though all of the airmen deserve to be honored for their heroism and sacrifice. They all endured the same dangers regardless of what type aircraft they were in. That was just the nature of aviation then, in addition to the conflict. I thank your father for his sacrifice for the country and the world at large.

What a magnificent war machine, beautiful, destructive, all the guns, the huge bombs, utterly incredible, an incredible relic of a great war which brought peace to the world, for a while.

Yeah, they put a lot of work into restoring her. It's almost criminal that she sat outdoors, unprotected for many years in Memphis where souvenir hunters stripped the interior of just about anything that was removable. I'm glad that she is back to her former glory, at least to preserve the history.
