@BalsaAeroProjects I don't build anymore, my friend. I mostly just assemble arfs and make my modifications if I need to. Growing up in my father's basement thats all we did was kit and scratch build. But he's gone now, and I don't have the setup where I'm living at the moment to start carving and sanding balsa wood. That's why I enjoy watching videos like yours where you trouble shoot and work through problems. I don't have to sneeze out any wood either lol. I penciled out plans for a DR-109 when I was younger. I think you did not keep account for the fact that the fuslage tapers toward the back. The airplane is drawn as viewed from the side when assembled. The aft portion of the fuselage sides are therefor pivoted away from the viewer. When they are projected into a flat view the become longer. Maybe not as long as they are now but certainly longer than on the main plan. I have workd with CAD my whole life and have drawn quite a bit of RC plans hobbywise as I had them means (and the hobby) :-)
@BalsaAeroProjects
@BalsaAeroProjects Месяц назад
Yes, that thought did occur to me regarding the fuselage sides and doublers but that still doesn't account for the formers that are too big. Also, In update 9, I talk about the horizontal stab being too big as well which also comes from the template page and it's just a flat plate. So, while I agree with your thinking on the fuselage curvature, I think the whole template page is simply too big. Thanks for the input!

@@BalsaAeroProjects I know. I'm restoring an ESM 109 that came even without the scoops. I designed mine in 3D but they came out with the same shape than yours, until I realize where is the problem: the intake is made by displacing the roof parallel to the floor, because if you create a plug and cut the intake slated, the sides will curve to the inside. I'm learning a lot from your videos to improve the ESM appearance. Thanks!

@@VictorHugoRC1111 Yes, that is exactly what happened. I took measurements from a 3-view in the Aero Detail book and scaled them to the model size. But, when shaped the intake became too curved. @BalsaAeroProjects

I hear ya. After completing this project I told myself no more ARF mods. As a matter of fact, I told myself no more ARFs! Thus, the reason for the DR-107 plans build. Even though I just want a model to test the flap mechanism, I'm undertaking a full plans build instead of mod'ing an ARF. I undertook the Seagull 109 project for three reasons. First, for the challenge. Second, since the 109 is one of my favorites and this model would be in my stable, I just had to make it look better. And third, I wanted a platform for the paint scheme which I find to be quite unique and interesting. I had already done a plans build 109 with the Brian Taylor 109E. This ARF got me a little closer to the painting aspect which I really enjoy.

Why did you not build the wings upside down ? The top is flat, so it kan be flat on the workbench (assuming that that is flat/straight)
@BalsaAeroProjects
@BalsaAeroProjects 3 месяца назад
Because I needed to sheet the one side of the wing before removing from the building board and as will be seen in the next video, I couldn't sheet the bottom in one piece as I wanted to do with the top. I could have built the bottom first, but thought it would be easier to accomplish my goal with building the top first.

Really wonder why the jig holes are on the centrelines of the ribs and not offset upward, so the wing is built flat on the top as you go. Would allow a one piece spar as you’ve done. Will you just block up one completed wing when needing to glue your spar onto the other side?
@BalsaAeroProjects
@BalsaAeroProjects 3 месяца назад
It would be a little more complicated than just offsetting the holes. Each set of holes in each rib would have to be adjusted away from the centerline in order to have the top of the wing level across its span. I did block up one side of the wing when working on the other side. That process will be forthcoming in the next video.
@tasesq
@tasesq 3 месяца назад
@@BalsaAeroProjects I was thinking that you would just make the jig tube holes a fixed distance down from the top of the spar notch on each rib. Effectively placing the top of the spar notch flat. Then measure how far from the rib centreline that hole is, and place the aft hole the same distance up from the centreline. The question would be, can you do this with the aft hole. Might not be possible as r12 may not be thick enough.
@BalsaAeroProjects
@BalsaAeroProjects 3 месяца назад
@@tasesq I understand your design thought and that would probably work but I don't have the drafting/engineering skills to be able to get the new holes in the exactly correct position. The success of this jig is dependent on the exactness of the holes, both as marked and then drilled.

I remember driving through the Memphis area back in the 1980’s and seeing the Belle on Mud Island on display. She was in such a sad state that the USAF repossessed her. Then in the early 2000’s I went to the Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton and was lucky to get a tour through the restoration shops. Sitting there in all her pointless glory was the Bell,minus wings but the Memphis Bell still painted on her nose. Several years later I made the trip back and she was mainly put back together but still pointless. I haven’t been able to go back but have been astonished at the quality of the restoration the staff there have done. She looks BEAUTIFUL! Now they are starting the restoration on the Swoose,an early B-17 that had been stored at the back of the hangar when I was there waiting its turn to be brought back to life.
