Boeing retiree finds meaning inventing micro homes & high speed trikes

Plans: www.elkinsdiy....
Inspired by a father and uncle who relied on "imagination, calculation, patience, determination and a few handy tools", Paul Elkins has spent more than half a century doodling, tinkering, designing, inventing and creating, among other things, a flat-pack house, a foldable boat, a 42-foot-high tree chair, plastic bike cars, wearable shelters, high mileage trikes, wooden speedboats, a $6 shelter, origami boats, micro RVs and bike campers.
He regularly films himself building and testing his latest creations for his youtube channel and sells plans for much of his work on his website ElkinsDIY. Despite his frustration with our current culture of buying and rebuying rather than fixing and building, he hopes to inspire future generations to enter his world where doing-it-yourself makes the ride, sail, night’s sleep so much richer.

This is utterly fascinating. I thought about this kind of stuff when I was a kid, but as you get older, enough of your ideas get shot down that you just start assuming things are done the usual way because that way's the best way. But that's absolute bollocks. This video properly unlocked something that had fallen asleep in my head.

Elkins is a tinkerer and we share a lot of the same hobbies. I have designed and built several off grid cabins including the one I live in now. I also design lots of homeless shelters having been homeless myself and even a tiny house boat and lots of off grid solar appliances that actually work like my solar composting toilet now used in Pakistan and India. The best part is when you can build them cheap from recycled materials someone was going to throw away and someone says "Hey- I can do that!". Thanks for the video of your project history, Elkins!

@@caswallonandflur692 Money unfortunately makes the world go round for sure. Though he uses very little money for his inventions and upcycles most of his materials, for people living paycheck to paycheck every penny is already spent. There is also the matter of having space and tools. That helps and you often need money for those. However you can do a lot of things at no or very little cost. I love crafts of all sorts. I love making anything I need and always find ways to improve things. My first sewing machine my exs dad got for me free from the still good shed at the dump. You can get TONS of good stuff at these. My second sewing machine that I still use I got for 5 bucks at a yard sale. Both nice machines and I gave the first one to my friends sister who wanted to go into fashion. It is often all in how you see the world. What can be improved or what can be used for what. $15 for the clips that hang baby toys? $1 for shower curtain clips. I started when I wanted to make a pull wagon as a kid. Got 2 wheels off an old carriage and put them on a box. Tied on a rope and I loved that thing. Inventing is all about imagination. Where there is a need for something or room for improvement find a way. If low on money, just keep an idea in your head and your eyes open and you'll find what you need eventually. Always be curious and never stop learning.

Your so right, is how man has been programmed, so is how he thinks. The sad thing, they usually get offended when you think smarter. Man does not need tiny homes, well he does, but not in the sense that is being presented. Man wants land and a home, freedom to travel, to live. You do something that provides everything in one then you came up with a workable solution. Is so easy too. :-)

I have no idea why people think they are doing good while not addressing real problems. Ask any millennial - do you want to live in a trailer or a house you'd get the same answer. Pretending its cool, modern or a life style choice is just head in sand. The bankers and their printed credit money is why you're on a 0 hours contract with no future and even 2 incomes from 0 amount to 0. There is no social mobility anymore and you're basically being milked by those with skin the game

Mr. Elkins has that homeless thing. It's weird and I know it, too. When I fall asleep on the couch with my dogs, I imagine we are sleeping on a mountainside, or a city park. I often think about where I would sleep when I travel. Of course the real answer is the hotel room my wife and I paid for, but I always see spots I could sneak into. I traveled that way in the 80's, and it must have left a mark on me.

His ideas can be a quick temporary fix to help with the homeless problem. A start. Unfortunately political hacks that run sewers like San Francisco don't really want to fix the problem. It's easier to just cry for the homeless to look righteous.

😂 I thought the exact same thing! My friend drove cross country years ago in his little hatchback. Had so much stuff piled in it he slept with his face almost touching the glass. Pulled over exhausted one night at a rest stop and woke up to the face of a very mentally handicapped guy a few inches away staring in at him.

Wow. I love this man and his ideas. Tiny spaces used well have always intrigued me. I really want a little outdoor, transportable shed in which there is a desk in front of a window at which I can design and make jewelry while enjoying nature. Some shelves behind me to store a few things. Sigh!
