My trick is to not do the tree braids on the first several bottom layers, from ear to ear. I start the tree braids in the middle to the top. Friction is was cause the matting. Rubbing against neck and clothes.

The reason why I love the braids is because the “matted” look makes it look natural and blends with my natural hair 😭! How many bundles did you use love? I need to know because I need the look like tomorrow

Love the hair, but to answer your question, like you said the hair on the wig was getting old and matted so using it in braids will only make it worse as you've cut it from the weft which makes it more tangle prone. Using the hair in its best quality will bring better results.

You should try silicone mix on the bundles if they’re bad before the install I promise it’ll make them bounce back lol

The same happened to my boho braids with human hair. Once I washed them they got matted. Now I only do goddess braids (hair added just at the ends and not throughout the braids) and I make sure not to get the human hair wet with shampoo or conditioner. I have gone to the beach/pool and everything was fine though.
