Very enterprising play. Thanks Daniel.

Instructive game! Particularly interesting are the variations where the N stays on D7, controlling the critical E5 square, followed by f5 shutting off the diagonal. Ugly but effective!

Interesting game. Easy to see how one could lose that. It didn't seem like it was dangerous and then all of a sudden, it is. Think I would have played Qc3 instead of eating the pawn on a2, however. My "spidey-senses" would not have allowed me to do it. :)

I will sometimes take the b2 pawn in these positions, but I never feel tempted to take the a2 pawn too. It is just too many moves with your queen and it is also usually harder to get it back out of there. It just seems too greedy, especially against a strong player.

When I play like this, I get checkmated on the 1st rank.

In the position at 7:09, Stockfish says that Qa5 is better than Qd5, attacking the undefended rook. After Qa5, Stockfish actually says White has to play Rc4 or Qd2 to avoid a losing position. It plans to meet either Rc4 or Qd2 with h6. At 12:01, Stockfish thinks Black had three drawing moves in lieu of Nxc5, namely Qxc5 (as discussed by Mr. King) but also Re8 and Qc6, the last of which is at first surprising since it was played a move later in the actual game. But if Qc6 immediately (instead of Nxc5), if White plays Rg4, Black can (and must) play e5, supported by the knight which is still conveniently on d7! A sad game for Zatonskih, but a really nice attack by Tan.

Heh as a New Yorker might say, if you're playing this against a computer, fuggedaboutit.

Great video and very wise words from Daniel regarding computers. People tend to blindly follow engine analysis, when it is often based on 30+ moves of analysis. Most chess players can't calculate that far and when you are playing a human opponent they can't calculate that far either. Take engine analysis with a very large pinch of salt!
