One of my most memorable vacations with my Mom and Dad. It was in the early 70s and it was as he left it. The amazing staircase was nothing but plywood stairs and two by four handrails. Congrats to all of the amazing trades people that brought life to Boldt Castle. Including more of the before pics would really show what work was done. Not a restoration but a miracle. Thanks for the video. It brought Mom and Dad back to me.
The castle was nearly finished when Louise died. Sadly , the place was looted of most of the interior finishes before it was taken over and restoration started.
I think it was around 1974, when I was 7, that my family and I travelled from Ontario to this island. I mostly remember the bowling alley and having to walk around the edges of a room as the floor was rotting in the middle. This is so wonderful, seeing what has been restored and what is in progress! I wish my mum was 'on line', so I could show her this video. Thank you.
Mr. Boldt certainly had an eye for beauty within creating this amazing mansion didn't he!! His wife was lovely looking as well...I feel sad for his loss of her!! Lastly, it's wonderful that it has been saved so we can all enjoy venturing around these magnificent grounds!!! Have a great week-end everyone!!
Visited as a kid in the 1980’s and it was amazing and beautiful then, even in disrepair. So great to see so much progress on it. One of the best times with my parents.
This is by far one of the best videos on Boldt Castle! Excellent!! Thank you for all the background history! And just a small note, that is not a swimming pool in the castle. That was for the water powered elevator from what a guide said.
Last time I was there was I the early 90s not much had been restored then none of the house , just the power house was done we were allowed to sign our names on the in one room so I did , it nice to see how far the renovations have come especially the stainless dome
Regular subventions from the Thousand Island Bridge Authority help immeasurably to bring this treasure back to what it should have been. So much fine work has been done since we last visited the Castle some 23 years ago.
@@josephengeln1653your music was just fine, thanks for sharing. Have been to the castle several times over the years, as a Canadian we always have to have our passports when entering the island. We always come by ferry from Kingston.
I can almost guarantee if it has been kept up all these years it wouldn't have not have needed so much work. If they had been renovating the place since 1977 I hope that it will be done soon and look as good as it did when it was first built. 😊👍❤️
Thank You for this wonderful illustrations GOD’S glory of life in the beauty and restoration of the castle right here in our own backyard here in our USA 🇺🇸 not across the Atlantic but here in our USA 🇺🇸 GOD bless those who work hard for years to restore the our American gilded age life and preservation in JESUS name amen 🙏🏾
Had a school trip here in early 60s and i remember thinking it was so sad it never was finished. We were told his wife died in a boating accident on the rocks below the castle on a trip to see how construction was going and that's why george never returned.
He sucked up to the rich, feeding off of their crumbs and exploited his fellow immigrants to build this place. Ahhh! The very essence of the American Dream!!
Just to put the pay in context, using silver as a base, 1 silver dollar back then could buy 100 dollars worth of goods in today's value. So, anyone who got paid 20 cents an hour, is like getting 20 dollars an hour now. The children would have made 2 dollars an hour in today's money. Luckily, we have child labor laws today.
I had a paper route when I was 11 yrs.old, babysat and worked every summer till I got my working papers. I started out with a strong work ethic, sadly something the younger generation doesn't have these days.
America has never ever been committed to paying the help and paying taxes. But they can and do blow a lot of money on vanity projects. A lot of money. Remember, we do without so much so these people can have so much.
you know, the soundtrack is generally in the background and not screaming over the narrator and film. Lower it and choose something more elegant. I had to stop listening. So overspeaking the voice.
I can admire it but always bothered me that some spent this kind of money while so many had nothing. Im sure if I was a millionaire in those days I would've helped as many as possible
Good photos, though that piano is crazy making. What has it to do with story? Guess is flapper dancing music that has nothing to do with story. Would be lovely without loud intrusive bad music.
Hi. Thanks for the comment. I am a bit of a history buff as well as traveler. I like putting things into their historical perspective. So it includes a bit of the history in which the castle was built as well as the castle
@@josephengeln1653 if I lower the volume I can't hear the narrator. Which is too bad because it's an otherwise excellent video and very interesting content/subject.
So - who paid for all this restoraion of a building that was never completed in the first place? It offends my sense of what matters ! The amount of money spent on this would likely pay for many beautiful homes for those born without the silver spoon. OK so he earned it, and his beaitiful wife died young, very sadly, and he needed to do something to mourn & put his love for her into something good - but this house, while gorgeous, does not do the most good he COULD have done with his fortune. Sad really ! The Gilded Age is really a horrible example of wealth gone completely mad & all done to impress other people. If you argue that this is a really good way to keep tradespeople in sync with their crafts, so that we do not lose their talents, then maybe that is the best reason to finish this mansion ??
Thanks for your comment. It was paid for by the Thousand islands bridge authority. My next video should be up next week. If focused on the corruption and greed of the Gilded Agree. Mark Twain coined the phrase. It was gold gilded on the surface and rotten underneath
So a beautiful architecture should not be built and humanity can only be a mass of people in a slew of huts with no great creation? Keep your artless plain; I'll take a world with at least some artistic amazement in it.
