I live in Ohio a straightwall cartridge state. I'm looking for one of these to rebarrel to the new 360 Buckhammer.

I have a bolt 30-30 but I think it might be a 340. Has been barely shot, very accurate. I put a scope on it. I've never hunted or shot it much. Never had much interest in it but would probably be a nice deer rifle.

I desire one of those rifles because they are shorter barrels and they have iron sights

I’m most intrigued by this model by Savage. There don’t seem to be many manufacturers of bolt action rifles chambered in 3030. I’d rather have a tubular magazine for the higher capacity but I spend my time at the range. Thanks very much for sharing this with us.

I really like it. I have a peep sight for it I want to try to install and sight in. The rear sight on there currently is a little easy to bump and knock the zero off. I like the uniqueness of the bolt action 30-30, but I also want a lever action!

mine doesn't seem to like the hornady leverevolution. they are all over the place.

I guess you won’t be buying those again! They’re not inexpensive rounds.

@@frufru0071 i actually went out to shoot some more. I had bought 2 boxes, so i figured i'd see if they get any better. I know on my first shoot with them, one of my scope mounts was messed up. That definitely was the problem that time. But the last time, i did everything the same as this time. The last time, they were everywhere. Nothing hit anywhere near where it should, and no two shots were anywhere close together. This time, everything went as one would hope. First 2 at 50 yards were an inch apart and within an inch of the bullseye. Picked another bull and repeated the same results. Moved out to 100 yards, 1st shot within 1 inch of the bull, but then a wild flyer. Moved to another bullseye, 2 shots within an inch of the bull, and within an inch of each other. And i had done nothing to anything from my previous shoot. But the earlier shoot, i was adjusting the scope throughout as well.

I have the same gun in 30-30. It's first generation wirh same sights and no serial # . Shoots great. But I have Never seen the barns bullet in 30-30 . I have it in 45-70 made by Remington. I would love to find the 30-30s though.

I had a 300 Savage. Lever action. Tack driver. Great rifle. I looked this video up to see if they even made 30-30 bolt action rifles and here it is. I can't take apart a lever action. Too much. So, I always wanted a bolt. Thanks for the video!

I had to revisit this video.. the local gun shop currently has one of those. He's asking too much.. $599.00.. the one he's got has checkering and appears late 60's.. it's topped with a vintage Bushnell Sportview. Overall.. it looks like a short handy carbine that was rarely shot and taken care of 😊
@MisterBrewer
@MisterBrewer 8 месяцев назад
Dang thats a little pricey but sounds like a nice one! In today's market, it's probably pretty reasonable. Mine is a little rough but it was only $225.

@@MisterBrewer yeah.. he definitely tries to make a living off of everything he sells! It would be nice to get it.. if it was $300 - $400.. somebody will eventually buy it though! They'll see it's a 30-30 Winchester and it's in a bolt action! That makes it unique!

0:52 Fun fact, When Remington had Barnes load the Hog Hammers (Remington owned Barnes for about a Decade) they actually complained to Barnes about the quality of the ammo. They said their biggest concern was that the Ammo made by Barnes was TOO good and would make the Remington built cartridges look bad. There was about 100,000 rounds of Hog Hammers sent back to Barnes because Remington was embarrassed. From what I remember it was mostly odd ball calibers but some of it was .30-30, .308 and I think .30-06

I put a Boyd's laminated thumbhole stock and an old Weaver K4 in a Weaver side mount on mine. At 100 yards with handloaded 170 gr Hornady RN, the rifle shoots right around an inch for three shots. It also likes 100 gr hollow points, but prairie dogs and rock chucks do not! Enjoy! Neat little rifles, and too bad that Savage has "forgotten" the 30-30!

Just picked up a 340B a few months ago, It has the original 30-30 barrel installed and a extra barrel chambered in 219 Zipper. Snowed in at the moment, can't wait till we thaw out here in Central Alaska so I can see what she's got.

Great video, I have three of these that I tracked down for my kids, although only one is a Savage the other two are the Stevens variant. Great starter guns for young kids to start with. Far safer than a lever gun.

Not sure where it might be located on the 340, but there should be a couple marks either on top of the barrel or the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. One will be SP encased in an oval. That stands for Savage Proofed. Meaning that it passed the Savage inspections when it came off the line. The other marking will be a number and a letter encased in an oval. This is the date code. Savage began doing this in 1949 and it continued until 1971 or 1972. The letters O and Q were not used. The number represents the inspector. Example, my Savage 110 has a date code of 11J. Which means it was made in 1958 and inspected by Inspector #11. One of my Savage 99's has a date code of 24B, meaning the gun was made in 1950 and inspected by Inspector #24. Date codes are as follows: A = 1949 B = 1950 C = 1951 D = 1952 E = 1953 F = 1954 G = 1955 H = 1956 I = 1957 J = 1958 K = 1959 L = 1960 M = 1961 N = 1962 P = 1963 R = 1964 S = 1965 T = 1966 U = 1967 V = 1968 W = 1969 X = 1970 Y = 1971 Z = 1972 Hope this helps.

I have the same model with original Dockendorf front and rear sights. Shoots everything into about 2 inches and is flat and accurate enough to 200 yards easily. I load 165 grain Nosler partitions to about 2300. I would use this load on elk sized game in heavy cover, but this year I took an elk with a 30-06 (Husqvarna 1640 found in the cheap seats at Cabela's for under $300 which I completely refinished including the checkering). It's hard to hunt enough to use all your guns and still remain employed!
@MisterBrewer
@MisterBrewer 9 месяцев назад
That load sounds great for 200 yards and in. I really need to get into handloading. Sounds like a great deal on the 30-06 and congrats on the elk! I have definitely been thinking I dont have enough hunting opportunities, so understand where you are coming from there! Thanks so much for watching and the great comment!

Thanks for the video. I have the exact same gun. Long time ago I put a receiver sight on it, but the front sight was too low so a taller front sight was put on. Much later put a scope on it since I have some serious vision problems. Is a very accurate gun. With Winchester 150 gr silvertips it was outshooting nearly everything else I have including a Weatherby mk v. From what I read, some are very accurate and others just average. With the right ammo they are super. Thanks for the video on a nice old gun.
