I really appreciate the compliment, it’s awesome knowing folks appreciate the work you’re doing! Stay tuned, every weekend I’m working on new content and I’ve got big plans in the works for 2023!
LITERALLY...Great channel keep up the good work, soon they will be offering you whatever you want, but it seems ya may already have that...😁 Plus you're in God's country...easy to watch your vids that scenery is ASMR for the eyes
This man knows exactly what hes talking about 100% The proof is in the pudding and I've tried out his theories .And he is 100% spot on This is somebody worth subscribing to If if you're serious about long range .
Really appreciate the support! Just out here trying to create entertaining content that I hope everyone can find valuable in some way. Stay tuned for more!
I feel like at those rifle prices the differences between a gas gun and bolt gun are much smaller. Those are both great guns that I expected to do well. To get that kind of accuracy out of a gas gun it takes much more money to be put into it. There are plenty of bolt guns around the $700-1,200 mark that can shoot 1moa or better today not many gas guns in that price range can claim that from factory. I would live to see you try this again with setups that come in under $3,000. The Barret MRAD setup alone was well over $9,000 in this video which is both impractical and unattainable to the average shooter. Other than that I loved the video you are an excellent shooter and I wish I had that kind of land to shoot on.
You know that is a great point! I will for sure look at doing this again with more budget friendly options, would be really cool to see how that changes the results. Thanks for watching and stay tuned as I'll be making plans to revisit!
Living the dream! I just think it goes to show that wind calls and understanding your rig's reticle are probably more important than gas vs bolt. (All other things equal such as fundamentals and having good loads).
Oh you are spot on! If you understand your gear and practice you will be very effective with which ever platform you are running. At the end of the day, training and practice is what makes the difference!
I have both types of firearms, the bolt, and the semi, but I lean toward the bolt gun more. I love the extra work that goes into working the bolt action. The 10-22 rimfire rifle sits collecting dust but the Ruger Rimfire American gets a workout with an $800 scope sitting on top, it cost $370.
You know that’s a great point, there’s just something satisfying about working the bolt! Just comes down to what you like at the end of the day. Thanks for watching!
I am in the first stages of deciding what long range rifle I want to purchase. I ran across your channel watching Texas Plinking and I really like your approach to education. I've learned a ton about the use of the optics in your videos. Thanks!!
Appreciate you taking the time to watch! Growing up on the east coast, when I moved out west and got access to the wide open spaces out here I realize I now live in a long range shooting paradise! Really enjoy getting to share that experience through my channel.
Another fine video. I expected the bolt gun to perform, but I must admit, I am very impressed with the auto loader. They have come a long way and I am finding fewer reasons to pack the bolt gun.
You and me both.... I was really surprised at the results when running them side by side. As I mentioned in the video, anymore I really think the primary advantage of a bolt gun is when shooting magnum calibers.
I have both for long range rifles My bolt rifles are Ruger Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor with a Vortex scope at 2.5-10×44 and a Tikka T3x Lite in .270 Win with a Leupold 3.6-18x44 scope. My autoloader is a Desert Tech MDRXCOM in .308 Win with a Vortex 1-10x24 scope. They are all 3 enjoyable to shoot. And I don't have a favorite. Just like my medium and short range guns. If I got ammo and a place to shoot. Life is good!
I hope to get to try a desert tech one of these days. Really like what I’ve seen from them online, very cool concept. Ultimately though if you’ve got ammo and the time to shoot life is good!
I loved the shooting. I loved both rifles and I love the scope cam that showed me what you were seeing and how you adjusted your follow-up shots. Thank you.
So glad to see this, I just started to shoot a precision gas gun build and have been struggling a little to get the results I had hoped for. It’s not the equipment, it’s me! Really enjoy your videos and keep up the good work!
Very fun to see what these can do. Being able to see the holds as you talk through the sighting is very helpful. Thanks for letting us come along for the ride.
Byf ar one of the best long range shooting YT channels. Very informative. Wish I had the kind of land available to shoot like that where I'm at. Keep up the awesome content!
Looking at your 'range', reminds me of the areas not too distant from Walla Walla. To be able to solo out wherever you are is enviable. The lack of distractions must be satisfying.
Thank you! Really appreciate the support! Man I’m very thankful to have access to this ground…. When I moved to this area from the east coast I realized I landed in a long range shooting paradise haha
I really do like your style of content. Keep up the type of content and your way of expressing yourself is very smooth and informational. You’re a solid instructor with very good shooting habits so don’t change a thing, so keep this going I AM IMPRESSED.. THANK YOU!!! I’m from the old school so I’m a bolt shooter through and through. I have 11 different calibers and all bolts but you HAVE opened my eyes some about semi’s. It’s going to be a lot of fun watching your channel grow and I sincerely hope it doe’s extremely well for you. Good luck!!!! 🤠🤠
Really appreciate the support and encouragement! I’m having a ton of fun creating content so no plans to slow down! I actually just finished filming a 308 battle zero video yesterday that I’ll get launched as soon as I can get it edited. So many content ideas, I just need more time to get them all filmed haha
Great video’s ! Not surprised at all by the SR25. Our unit used these a lot overseas. Great video to show side by side, however, and prove both capabilities. Of course a solid shooter cannot understated. Thats what makes the guns performance standout. 🇺🇸
I will have to agree with most of the commenters the semiauto is perfect with the right setup. Especially if on the rare occasion when hunting your first shot is not perfect you can get a second shot off to put the animal down so it does not suffer. I love bolt guns but I like the idea of quick follow up shots if needed.
Yep I totally agree with you. Aside from rifles in magnum calibers I prefer shooting semi auto over bolt action in basically every occasion. Super handy to be able to send that follow up shot without breaking your position.
One of the best channels on the youtubes. Love your content man. Looks to me like you would be good to go with either of those platforms. I think for 1000 yards I’d be more comfortable with a bolt gun but either one shoots great.
Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel! Ultimately I think it comes down to confidence. The platform you are most confident shooting is by far the platform you are going to be most effective with. Like the old saying goes, it's the indian and not the arrow haha
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video and I appreciate you taking the time to support the channel! A nice 6.5 AR is hard to beat, easy to shoot, very accurate and decently affordable...... great package nowadays!
The mullet is strong with this one... And you've got some skills too. Autos are a completely different ball of wax for most people to shoot well like you mentioned vs a bolt action. Only _ONE_ recoil impulse to sort out and get used to vs two which trips a lot of people up so there's that aspect. Part of the "bolt is better" lore for LR work also is simply old parrots repeating the old ways. Like with most thing shooting related such as the .308 vs the "new" 6.5, old habits die hard. The other half is how hard it can be to "tune" an AR if it's misbehaving or built by someone that's not exactly a great AR gunsmith, aware of the accuracy "quirks" inherent to building an accurate AR. As well as how much AR quality control and manufacturing has improved in the last decade, especially if you pony up for a top tier AR. There's a host of _other_ factors too but... As a side note, 100 yards isn't a great benchmark for accuracy or even _load development_ for that matter! External ballistics does some FUNKY things to a load that "seems great" at 100 but then you test the accuracy at 200 or 300 and all of a sudden the groups can open up after the bullet flight stabilizes better?! For gits-n-shiggles try a load test at 200-300 yards on a fairly calm day for wind and compare to your good load for 100 yards. If you haven't already, might also try the 147 ELD-M's _IF_ you can find em. They'll buck the wind a lot better being heavier for caliber. Like the wind trying to push on a boulder vs a feather, also has less drop farther out too. That's all I shoot but... 🤫 😁 What neck of the woods are you in, Nebraska, Wyoming?
I do not think it really matters what you choose based around accuracy. I think once you know how a certain rifle behaves the auto gets the advantage because you do not have to break grip or move to cycle. But the MRAD is just so cool and the SR is super sweet also. Nice shooting!
I am new to this kind of shooting. Hell im just now in the building process of an AR10 in 308. Never used a scope before. Thats what I call new...lol. but clearly both are amazing guns and at this kind of distance not having the rifles on a fixed mount with no imput from the shooter other than pulling the trigger its damned impressive period. The shooter is the major difference not the gun it seems to me. I just wonder what it would be like if they were mounted so the guns were unable to move kind of thing. doesnt seem to be a lot of difference except to the expert shooter im sure. Loved watching it !!
Oh man dropping the rifles in a fixed rest would be cheating haha. You’re going to be shocked how easily you’re able to make hits at distance once you get your 308 AR10 up and running. In my most recent video I laid out my process for taking a new rifle out of the box and using it to make hits all the way out to 1000ish yds. Check that video out if you haven’t already, I think you’ll find shooting out to distance is way easier than you expect! Thanks for watching!
I have a Tikka TAC A1 in 6.5 Creedmore. I reciently built a .308 gas gun, all custom. Still getting used to it. I need more time on the Gas gun, but agree about the speed factor, where as the Tikka is a tac driver. My scopes arn't as good as yours (Vortext Strike Eagle on the Tikka and an Arken on the Gas gun). Having fun with both.
That’s the downside to gas guns…. They take a lot of practice to be able to shoot well, especially if you’re trying to shoot quickly. To me the fun factor always goes to the gas gun. Tell you what…. I’ve heard the Arlen scopes are great for the money. Might have to get my hands on one down the road for use on the channel.
New to rifle shooting. Despite how technical this content is you're teaching style and presentation made this information fully digestible. Thank you so much brother
You know 50 cal videos aren't something I've really thought about doing. I have access to a barrett M107 so if I did anything with a 50 that's the rifle I'd have to start with.
KAC is no joke. I started looking into getting a knights armament ar15.. when I saw that a complete KAC lower was $2900.. That brought my plans to a halt. Great rifle but you can do just as good (maybe) with a complete custom build that has the best of the best of everything. Then you could likely get 2 of those pricey custom rigs for the price of 1 knights armament.
Yeah now is not the time to be buying kac….. their prices have absolutely skyrocketed lately. In my opinion kac is worth a premium but not what we are seeing currently. I’ve been down the custom rabbit hole before and decided it’s not for me. I’d rather invest in a quality factory rifle.
I would say many say bolt over semi because of dollar per accuracy. I have a load for my M & P 15 that shoots MOA with 55 gr FMJ's. I shoot MOA at 1000 with my Remington 700 AAC SD in 308. Thanks for the video.
You know that’s a great point. Seems like accurate bolt guns are a bit more affordable than an equally accurate semi auto. If you’re handloading however like it sounds like you are, it’s pretty wild how well you can tune a load to make almost any rifle shoot. Thanks for watching!
Ultimately I’m an eldm fan but transitioned away from them in auto loaders. Multiple times I’ve unchambered an unfired round and found the plastic tip broke off. Would say if you’re going to shoot a plastic tip bullet to occasionally unchamber a round and make sure the tip is still attached until you get confident your rig isn’t breaking them off.
Dude you are so damn good at this- I love that you don't start your videos with goofy BS, that you provide good info that I know from experience to be true, you aren't pimping gear. Really think this is the best shooting channel. And oddly enough you shoot the same stuff I shoot. My primary long range are the MRAD in 300 PRC or Norma, MR762, Knights SR25, Armalite Super SASS (all 3 in 308) and SCAR 20s in 6.5CM
Man really appreciate the compliments! I’m just a regular guy out here trying to create the kind of content that I enjoy watching and so far it seems to be working. Lots of new content coming so hope you’ll stay tuned and share with your buddies! That’s actually crazy how similar your rifles are, almost perfectly aligned haha
Appreciate that! I had a ton of fun making this one. Pretty clear that modern quality gas guns are extremely capable long range shooters. Thanks for watching!
When the SR25 first hit the market, part of the sales pitch was accuracy as good as the M40 if I remember right. Test targets were sub minute. M,M,M! can do the voodoo that he do so well with it.
I have both and feel that either can be equal with practice. I do think that I can get better accuracy out of a bolt gun at a cheaper price than an autoloader.
Agree with you on both of your points. Both bolt guns and auto loaders are capable of impressive accuracy but it's usually a little easier and cheaper to achieve that level of accuracy with the bolt gun. Tons of really great shooting factory bolt guns on the market now for very affordable prices.
Not at all surprised with results, given KAC autoloader and Barrett Bolt Gun. The KAC is my preference if rate of accurate fire is part of the equation. Good Vid.
Thank you! With quality gear I think it ultimately comes down to user preference. I think the days of semi autos being less capable than bolt guns are over.
Depends on what you’re trying to do. If you shoot PRS matches and want to win, bolt action still dominates. A purpose built chassis/stock will sit on support bags better for positional shooting. Gas guns will exploit any error in your fundamentals. I’ve run both in matches and typically shoot 5-10 points better with my bolt action which is the difference between finishing in the top 5, or mid pack.
100% agree with you here. If the goal is prs type match shooting, 100% a bolt gun in one of the light recoiling flat shooting calibers is the ticket. That said however I just prefer shooting ARs, to me it’s more fun but of course that’s why they offer different tools for the job haha. Thanks for watching!
I'm a fan of the precision semi autos. Seems to me people under value semi autos in precision rifles. In 'real world' situations the speed and not running an action can have significant performance gains.
I just subscribed, I thought I did earlier but I must have forgotten to a few of your videos before. I knew the gas gun would have done pretty good, but I didn't think it was gonna be as close as it was against that MRAD. Great shooting! I did a 6.5 CM gas gun build from parts. Started with a stripped upper and lower then bought the barrel, trigger and other parts separately over time so it wasn't as painful as buying a completed rifle all in one shot. I don't have access to a range like yours or have another AR in 6.5 CM that was factory built. I was wondering if you could do a comparison of a built vs bought rifle comparison some day? Just to see how an "average Joe"rifle stacks up with the Big guys/ factory rifle. Keep up the great work !!!!
Oh man solid idea. Not sure how quickly I’ll be able to pull off a factory vs built comparison though….I don’t own any built rifles at the moment. Have you had a chance to get your setup to the range yet to see how it shoots?
@@MountainsMulletsMerica Yes I have ! I love it! It does about an MOA with factory ammo, I have had some groups under an inch on good days but not all the time, lol I still need to practice more on it. I probably had less than 200 rounds through it so far.
@@ericamby2681 in my opinion if you are consistently getting 1 moa and occasionally better that's plenty good to shoot long range. At that point I'd stop chasing tighter groups and move to shooting distance. I believe the experience gained shooting out to distance is more important than shaving group size at 100 yds. I'm sure the target you'll shoot at distance will be bigger than 1 moa so you're already within the margin of error for the targets you're shooting.
Really interesting topic here. I was always under the preconceived opinion that the bolt gun would likely out perform the gas gun but as you noted the modern development of truly accurate gas guns, they seem to be on par with the bolt gun accuracy. That coupled with the development of really accurate bullets these guns are pretty equal. The ability of the gas gun to do much faster follow up shots without releasing your grip to cycle the action the scale tips significantly in favor of the gas gun in my opinion. Thanks as always for the great video and well thought out material.
Pretty wild what modern gas guns are capable of. I think there are a ton of people out there with the opinion that has guns can’t hang with bolt guns and I really think they’d be shocked with the results if they actually ran the 2 side by side. The main advantage I’ll give the bolt gun is that they are easier to shoot accurately. Consistently running a gas gun to distance with sub moa performance takes a lot of practice.
Just finding this episode, but I really appreciate the comparison between bolt and gas. I'm a bolt guy at the range, however, if I was deploying then my choice would be the gas. You are an excellent shot and I have become a new fan of this channel.
Very impressive. I thought the gas gun would give up more accuracy at distance compared to the Barrett. That was some beautiful footage while you were at 1340 as the sun was setting!
Yeah man, pretty crazy how well modern gas guns shoot. Really the only place I see bolt guns making sense is in the magnum calibers. Pretty crazy how pretty this area is, beautiful rolling wheat fields and sunset really highlights the terrain. Thanks for watching!
Good info! I think that first shot on the speed test with the semi-auto was the shooter. The reason I say that is bc the way the reticle moved when that first shot was released. Also, how tightly those other 4 rounds impacted on the steel target. I have watched it multiple times. Great vid!
Very possible, I’d like to think it’s never my fault but that’s just not the case haha. There will always be human error, the good news with the semi auto is you get the chance to send that follow up corrected shot faster haha
Awesome video brother. My bolt gun set up is not expensive. Mine is 20 in bull barrel Remington 700 , in 308. On a solid aluminum ORYX CHASSY. I haven't had a chance to test at those long ranges but holding tight 1ch groups at 200 yrd zero. I've killed deer out to 400 yards with it. Would love to put some distance to see how myself and gun would preform. Great video as always!!!!!
Oh man if you’re shooting 1” groups at 200 yds you’ve got an epic setup easily capable of long range work. Certainly longer distances introduce more variables that mess with your shots but ultimately the ability to shoot a tight group will help overcome these variables. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel!
Really great video, again! Good bolt guns however, can easily shoot 1/2 MOA out of the box, like a Tika TAC A1, and achieve half that again with adjusting the COAL. Like you, I've never been able to get much lower than 1 MOA with reasonable velocities from a gas gun. I did get 1/2 MOA with my JP LRI-20 using 130 grain ELD-M's at 2450 fps, but ughh.
For sure bolt guns are typically capable of superb accuracy and I believe the mrad is capable of better than the group shown in this video. That said however it is what it is and that’s the group it laid down on video so I ran with it. While 1/2 moa is epic, I’d much rather sacrifice a little accuracy to get more than 2450 fps, that’s not enough to really make the 6.5cm shine. That’s the fun part about this hobby….. there’s always something to tweak and always the opportunity to get better!
@@MountainsMulletsMerica Your being kind, 2500 FPS is terrible with such a small bullet. I ended up settling on a 140 grain bullet at 2750. and it shoots just under 1 MOA, and is deadly out to 700 yards. Shot a nice white tail at 515 yards, and my follow-up capability was absolutely tremendous; ended up not needing it, but I sent it anyway just to be sure. Kind of interesting how sub MOA doesn't seem to have much of an affect on steels down range out to 1,000 yards, I always thought that it would, but with my experience it doesn't seem to. Anyway, good stuff dude, love you channel.
Today’s match conditioning techniques can render semi-auto and bolt gun accuracy to be indistinguishable when testing is performed by a credentialed marksman. This is proven in NRA Long-Range Competition where USAMU shooters can get results from match conditioned US Service Rifle that High Master Shooters expect from their any/any class bolt gun preferences.
@@charlesludwig9173 I like both but I'd prefer semi (assuming it's accurate) (Also depends on caliber) But I also like that bolt guns are cheaper than semi sometimes.
Appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel! Just put here trying to create content that’s entertaining yet also provides some kind of value to the viewer. Stay tuned for more just like this!
Thank you. I have a DB10 6.5 creedmoor. It's a 1 MOA rifle. I had been thinking about getting a bolt action rifle to improve accuracy. I see now. I can't work on improving the accuracy trying to get sub moa groups.
You know if I’m getting 1 moa with an AR I’m happy. It takes a lot of work to get them to consistently shoot sub moa and in my experience being able to consistently shoot 1 moa will still allow you to be very effective at distance. If I were you I might try some different bullets to see if anything improves but if you don’t see anything that excites you I’d just accept 1 moa as acceptable and spend my time shooting to distance vs for groups.
I run the “shooter” app. I’ve used it for years and best I can recall it costs something like $10 in the App Store. Very happy with the results I get out of it. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Well, I will never be able to afford any of the scopes. Probably gonna stick to closer range plinking lol. Love the effort you put into this! You got things figured out!
Performance seems good for both. I think if you were looking for accuracy/bullets down range/ ease of use I’d say the auto loader is the way to go with the 6.5 C
Love my 16” Daniel defense.308…but I’ve lusted over a magnum precision bolt gun many yrs…get a 20” version..dd5v5 in .260 if possible..I bet you’d like it…you have the exact setups I love and a decent little field to shoot in…
You know aside from a daniel defence MK18, I don't have much experience with their rifles. For sure their gear is something I'd like to spend more time with if the opportunity comes up down the road. Appreciate you taking the time to watch! Stay tuned though as I've got plenty more content in the works and it'll all be located on the same ground!
@@charlesmullins3238 funny you mention the 178 BTHPs….. They seems like an awesome bullet with a very attractive price. Been thinking about working up a load for these in my mk11
@@MountainsMulletsMerica you might skip those. If you haven’t got any of Bryan Litz’s books they have a catalogue in the back of different bullets and the main thing there is the recorded form factor. The 168 berger hybrid, 169 smk, and 185 berger juggernaut all have better form factors and sit well in 308
@@K-bob_45 can't say I've read the book but I tried the 178 bthps and wasn't impressed with how they performed out of my SR25s. Both my 308 SR25s shoot the 175s beautifully and so far I haven't found a higher BC bullet that really impresses me accuracy wise yet. I'm wondering if mag feeding is leading to more bullet jump than those sleek bullets prefer.
I have been told by a SF Sniper instructor…”the days of bolt guns being more accurate than Gas guns are about over.” Your video seems to support that statement! Nice Job!
Ya. I have a Savage Hunter 308 and it’s a 1 MOA rifle out to 500 yards. I have a Remington 700P bolt that’s definitely more precise, but when it comes to sending lead down range with practical accuracy, a good semi auto is superior all day every day. A semi auto is especially important is the target is moving and at range.
That's not true at all. Even our new socom rifle is a bolt action because of the accuracy over the auto action variations that were evaluated. In Sf, we never opted to carry the m110 over the bolt action variants we had in our inventory. The mk12 spr being the exception, but that is in 5.56 and not really a sniper rifle or used in that role. For civilians, you can get quality accurate gas guns, but they will always cost more for the same amount of accuracy achieved than a bolt gun. You can buy an off the shelf bergara b14 hmr that's guaranteed sub moa for 1k or less and close ti 3/4 to half moa gun while a gas gun to achieve that in 6.5 you are looking at a lot more.
Great video. From my experience, the role of the firearm is the most important in the decision. I big heavy bull barrel 6.5c ar. It’s so heavy that I kind of regret it. So I think the weight is important to point out, but the barrel choice impacts the weight a lot.
100% the intended application is the key driver of rifle and setup. I typically prefer heavier barrels and like more weight but I really only target shoot with the occasional match. If I were hunting or carrying my rifles I’d be looking for much lighter options. Like you say, the barrel is the easiest place to shed weight. Thanks for watching!
May be I am a noob. But to me, it seemed the following: 1. Your prior shooting with the bolt action helped you to faster windage and elevation correction for the semi-auto. 2. Modern semi-auto long guns do not lose much accuracy compared to bolt-action rifles.
I loved this video! I have an AR10 6.5 CREEDMORE . the old farts keep telling me a bolt is way better. But like you, I hit what I aim at. Great job, American.
Love it! Always fun to see the look on people’s faces when you start making those long range hits with a semi auto rifle! It’s like some folks don’t want to believe it’s possible haha. Thanks for watching!
So here is my take on one or the other. Speed kills and that is true in most things. That said not all things are equal. So running a NEMO Arms Omen Watchmen with the 24" Proof Research carbon barrel with hand loads to match the gun will get you .5 moa or better. I have other build with Proof Research carbon barrel ar's one in 6 arc that also doing this. I love my bolt guns but if choice is one or the other, I choose speed.
In my experience, gas guns are just as good as bolt guns from prone ir from a bench. Bolt guns only really seem to pull ahead when im shooting off barricades where the position isnt as stable, since the gas gun tends to move more during the firing process which effects accuracy. Plus the lock time is slower as well. But ill say most of the time a gas gun is what I like!
Thank you! I had a blast making this one…. Always fun to show that an auto loader is very capable of holding its own vs a bolt gun when shooting long range!
Thank you! Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel. I’ve got lots more content planned so hope you’ll stick around and check it out!
Honestly, I watched one of your videos ( I don't remember which one) and thought you were an idiot. I was wrong. This was a well thought out and well executed display. Furthermore, I envy you your resources. All around, well done.
Thank you! Appreciate you taking the time to watch! I was actually out filming with the mrad today. Hoping to get some more ELR content out this month so stay tuned!
I think that’s the assumption most folks have. My opinion modern semi autos easily hold their own with a capable shooter. Bolt guns are easier to consistently shoot accurately so I believe that’s why many folks believe they are more accurate than a semi auto. When you move to the Magnum calibers I believe the advantage swings bolt action every time though.
Hey man I’m really curious where your at. It reminds me of the area I live in. I’m in WA state on the east side of the cascades. There’s a couple small farm towns near where I grew up called Lind & Odessa where dry land farming reigns supreme. The landscape in your videos remind me of that area. Anyways great shooting!
After watching this video I had to subscribe. Amazing quality. Please keep it up! I love that you keep it grounded in real world application, and you give great instruction.
