Feeling the holiday post partum? I'm in the shop to fix the better 3/4's food processor. It won't cut the pie crust.
Another victim of planned obsolescence.
Thank you very much for your help! Early access to new VJOs here

If you work on the railroad, you must know the joke... Two extremely drunk guys are stumbling between the railroad tracks in a tunnel. One says to the other: - Hey, this flight of stairs is really long! - Yeah, and the handrails are really low. How long before we get there? - No worries, I can see the elevator coming...

I have to seat and reseat the mixing bowl and all the various parts for about 10 minutes before it decides to work, and then not look at it even remotely funny or it tells me to f-off and won't turn back on. I mean this completely unironically. There is no shame in therapy, counseling, psychology, whatever it takes. Your wife, your kids, and your audience honestly care. The five best phrases in the English language all share one particular word in common; Surplus. Find yourself a local outfit that sells restaurant and cafeteria surplus and you'll never look back. Most folks pass them by thinking they only sell mega-sized industrial gear, but they often have normal sized kitchen tools made from real metal and glass instead of crap plastic and crappier plastic.

On the flip side, everyone was REALLY happy when the weather cleared up - well, the ones that hadn't suck-started a shotgun anyway. Kitchen-Aid for mixers, Cuisinart for processors, Breville for blenders. Gots to have the right tool for the job. Having said that, I know it's a new day in consumer land. Both my mixer and my processor are decades old when their brand meant something (and they specialized). Back in that same day, Oster was the name for blenders, but I've been through about three brands of them over the years (all mentioned in this paragraph) and it wasn't until I stumbled on the Breville (pricy little devils) that I got one worthy of space on the counter. "America's Test Kitchen" winner, too.

What you want is a 1980s Cuisinart. The earlier the better. A made in J a pan one. The parts are available to replace anything the previous owner broke. Although if the main bowl is cracked/damaged you'll have to buy a bunch of parts to update because the original design isn't made any more. These things are still going and getting close to 40 years old.

The ‘Princess’ here (we’re on the ‘WetCoast’) has all KitchenAid stuff (and all red too) and its strange to my electrical/mechanical mind how/why they actually design some of their operations... I came to the ‘show’ bringing my Cuisinart appliances... The KitchenAid stuff sits out on display like the show pony’s they are, the Cusinarts come out from under the covers and actually perform the deeds as requested. She used to use the KitchenAid mixer sausage stuffer attachment to make her homeland Azorean special Chouriço. I had her a ‘race’ and could hand stuff them casing twice as fast using my Princess Auto sausage stuffer then she could... (you can call me a sausage stuffer, but NEVER a cork soaker!) that KitchenAid attachment thing was so deflated she relegated it to the GARAGE storage, never to see the light of the LED kitchen lights again!!! We have the bestest soft fluffy bread doughs, pie crusts, smoothies, everything my diabetic little heart desires! Only issue I’ve had with my Cuisinart food processor? A recall because the stainless steel blades have a habit of coming unhinged and parts flying off all around inside the mixer bowl... some kinda enginerding F-up with getting the sharp shiny part to stick to the hard plastic part. Luckily, my dicks in a vise, so all is safe!

Hey AvE, I believe it was your last blender video where you were processing quartz. You said something about wanting to make some sort of equipment that would well, sort the good and the bad ore. Getting to the point, have you seen the videos of those machines that can sort ripe fruits or anything really? Lets say you were processing tomatoes, it's able to separate using some kind of lights or sensors to see which are green, then uses mechanical arms to knock them away from the ripe tomatoes. I saw it and remembered you said something about UV light having a different effect on quartz with gold and without, figured I'd mention it, although it would be one hell of a concept project. Here's a video of one in action, /watch?v=fEemerXP_hk Supposedly they can be made accurate enough to even separate rice. Have a good day.

LOL - I am always fixing things like this out of stubbornness (and not wanting to put stuff into landfill). I persist long past the point where sane people would have quit. Funny though, I always have a huge backlog of stuff - from the wife, in-laws, friends, sister-in-laws next door neighbour's ex-husband (seriously!), etc. Yesterday I repaired our potato masher (probably worth $2) with a broken plastic part inside a tubular metal handle. Welded a rod onto the tang of the masher and embedded it all inside the tube with epoxy resin. The resin was probably worth more than the masher - but now it will still be going long after I am gone. ~30 years ago the plastic handle snapped off a new kitchen hand grater - you know, the kind you use for grating hands (TOT reference) - again, worth ~$2. I spent hours making a new one from wood. Everyone said "just get a new one" (which no doubt would have snapped again in short order). The wooden one is still as good as the day I made it (and looks better too). So, my advice (as if you care or need it) - fix it, fix it good - if you buy something new, it is probably just as shitty as what you already have so you may as well persist with what you have) (but for heaven's sake, choose your battles and always tell the sister-in-law's neighbour's ex- husband "piss off, I am too busy")

Glue? - I love the KitchenAid mixer, but the food processor is a pile of garbage. Ninja isn't bad, but it has its own issues

Thanks, cool teardown. I thought I'd chime in. I do catering one or two days a week and have Cuisinart Food Processor that has to be like 30 years old. The motor base is very heavy and while I broke the Lexan handle off of the container, it still works wonderfully. Heavy doughs like pasta or what have you churn through it effortlessly. That being said, the newer ones don't have that same quality, they are less than half the weight (to me that means the motor) and feel much more cheaply made.

Yay my favorite videoman!... You know, if you have any spare giant motors lying around I bet you could just use that fancy CNC machine of yours to make your wife some kind of ungodly abomination of a pie crust blender thing. Or maybe you could just make some kind of attachment for one of your manual mills, I bet those have enough torque to make a food thing. Hope you get over the seasonal depression thing quick!

Awesome. I bought one of these to make saurkraut, so chopping various veggies. I ran for a good while and after 4 gallons of kraut started, the blade spindle that fits into the plastic socket in the bottom of the lid got too hot and melted the socket. Luckily I found a broke ass Kitchen Aids and picked it up for cheap to get the lid from it. Always apply coconut oil to that plastic socket and pray it doesn't melt.

Here's what I'd do: Replace the motor with a right-angle drive. Extend input shaft of said drive out through the case. CNC a hub and attach the blades of your choice to it. Finally, chuck a skookum battery-powered variable speed drill of your choice to the input shaft, and voila! A fully portable hella powerful food processor with infinitely variable speed and pulse mode for no extra charge. Big win all around!

Pro Tip: Forget about the pie crust making tool. Here's a better option for the important one in the family. Trust me :) Your grocery store likely sells pre-made pie shells in the refrigerator (not freezer) section. Most important, purchase a set of "ceramic pie weights" and use them to pre-bake the pre-made pie shells. Add a home-made filling and get the best pies ever. Purchase pre-made pie dough and peel apples with the family while the crust pre-bakes. You'll get many, many more pies.

I've found the best way to ask is: "Almost not worth fixing, can it wait till your birthday, or do I fix it?” The negotiation is now about time, she counters with how much she needs it, being careful not to say anything that rushes you to do repairs, (cuz what girl doesn't want new and shiny, and she doesn't want YOU to pick it out), which you counter with "Do these things ever go on sale?” So what ya did in reality is say “wait until the price drops or I'll be forced to fix it” she counters with “just get rid of it, they always pops up on sale at Canadian Tire (or whatever). Win-win.

You should make a video about the process of trouble shooting in general. I feel like it’s often over looked but extremely essential. For example when I was a machine tech for a injection molding plastics company I was taught to adjust the variables that change immediately and methodically work my way to changing variables such as water or barrel temp.

I must recommend an Ankarsrum Assistent kitchem machine, probably some of the best engineering sweden has ever done, comes with all the attachments, super serviceable, basically a bulletproof design more or less unchanged since the 40's, has a motor the size of a small melon, and comes in an attractive retro spray painted metal case that looks nice wherever it sits. Comes in a whole range of colors too. Still made in Sweden in town with the same name as the machine.
