United States Army Air Forces film "Bombers Over North Africa" -- Notable for it's extended "up close and personal" look at the men of the 321st and 97th Bomb Group. In the beginning General Dwight D. Eisenhower's gives homage to the effectiveness of the U.S. Air Force in the final Tunisian victory.
This is an amazing rare look at early war US Air Operations in North Africa. B-25 and B-17 bombers help cut off Rommel's retreat from Tunisia. Part of the "North West African Strategic Air Force," these groups were initially tasked with preventing men and material from reaching the Afrika Korps, and later with preventing them from escaping. The missions for the day of this film were to strike from bases in Algeria at the junction at Manouba, near Tunis, and the air field at Sidi Ahmed, near Bizerte, where a large number of extremely valuable JU 52 transports were based, a key element in German evacuation plans.
The film also features an afterword by Air Operations Commanding General "Jimmy" Doolittle. You'll see real pre mission and after action debriefing sessions with the men who flew them, including a B-17 crew's account of an FW 190 shoot down and the water ditching of a heavily damaged B-25.

This was something special to view. All original footage for me. So great to see Ike and Doolittle chatting away. The debriefing of the crews after their missions, particularly the crew that had to put down in the water appeared completely authentic. A few of those airman already looked fully qualified in their 1,000 yard stare. While many dedicated history students have read Ike's "Crusade in Europe", its rare for me to ever discover somebody that has read Doolittle's autobiography "I can never be so lucky again". There are references to the 12th Air Force campaign that he wrote about that are vital to anyone with a greater interest in the later 8th and 15th Airforce campaigns over Europe.

Today, 6/6/24, I would like to honor my father in law, Marvin John Olson, who was a bombadier (11:48) over North Africa in WW2. He was shot down twice (18:30 this crew landed after losing an engine and was safe) and taken prisoner by the Italians who turned him over to the Germans. The Germans revered American airmen. I didn't believe this but it is documented. Johnny had an airman's tattoo on his shoulder and a German guard saw it. That German guard helped him to escape. He made it home and had three children. His widow died at 99 not two years ago. His youngest child, my husband, died last year. The other two children are gone as well. I honor you, Johnny. Rest at peace with your family around you. You've earned it...

Most people don't realize that those bombers were typically flying at about 12,000' in North Africa, which was why the P-40's could escort them. P-40F's and Spitfires were important to provide top cover for the P-40k's whose performance dropped above 15,000'. The USAAF had acquired about 600 spitfires in total.
