"The Battle of Midway," directed by Lt. Cmdr. John Ford U.S.N.R., provides a
brief account of the Japanese attack of American ships at Midway atoll.
On June 4-6, 1942, a large Japanese force attempted to capture Midway Island in the North Pacific, but was defeated by U.S. forces with a loss ratio of 4:1 in favor of the Americans. On hand was a crew of naval photographers directed by Lt. Cmdr. Ford. The film covers the attack on Midway, some limited aerial footage, the search for survivors, and aftermath of the battle.
The film is comprised mostly of authentic footage from the battle, with
dramatic narration by Henry Fonda. "Behind every cloud, there may be an
enemy," he intones as American fighter pilots search the sky. The rest
of the film mocks Emporer Tojo of Japan and portrays him as ruthless,
bombing hospitals and churches as he tries to conquer the Pacific.
The few places where the film jumps its sprockets and goes out of frame were caused by the concussion of exploding bombs or shrapnel hitting the camera. Those scenes were left in by director Ford to demonstrate the intensity of the battle. Director John Ford and cinematographer Joseph H. August were wounded by enemy fire while filming.
You can call it propaganda, but this 16mm Technicolor footage was captured AS the battle happened and was not restaged.
