Try showing up to an exam you've studied for am are incredibly confident at in the afternoon exam slot, to have the invigilator say it was in the morning slot
@@tomsmith6878 If she did that then she didn't deserve him. His brilliant!! Plus, that quote perfectly fits my baking when I reach above my pay grade. :/
I think Paul probably had a lot of fun experiencing someone this bad at baking come on bake off and be completely unintimidated by him, tbh. James did not come to impress with his baking, he was dragged in and decided to be the funniest person on the whole show while grumbling the whole time, which is so DIFFERENT from a regular contestant that I bet they all enjoyed it a bit extra.
He was actually going through a bad breakup and he said 2017 was the worst year of his life. He called Samaritans a couple of times that night and the other contestants were told to be nice to him and were made aware if his situation. While very funny, it's actually kind if sad.
@@Chargede i don't think any of them knew he'd been on the phone to Samaritans or that he was having a really hard time. They just thought he was a bit sensitive after he said "this doesn't feel nice"
@@IndieRockerHippy dude I'm sure the producers said he was going through a rough time when they asked the contestants to be chill, not just "be nice hes sensitive"
Imagine not having slept in 36 hours, being on the verge of a break up with your girlfriend, totally depressed, and still being this funny. I can’t believe it. Comedy just runs through his veins.
I don't find it respectful for people who knew what's happening behind the curtain to call it "still being this funny" and "it runs through his veins". The guy was battling dark thoughts. Imagine how'd he feels. "Hey man, sorry to hear about what you went through during this event. But wow. You're still funny despite all of that! Awesome!" Commedians are prone to depressions. Well, some types of commedians. Those are basically philosophists who are trying to change people's opinions and statement about things they find intolerable through humor. The laughs and the jokes are being used to mask pain.
@@budle89 ok but his choice to funny right? if you know a comedian is going through something do you support them by not laughing? seems a bit backwards. Imagine that comedy show.
Bon appetit was the name of juillet childs tv show in the 70'.. she said that at the end of her show.. really surprised that he said that! Either he knows about it or it's jus a coincidence!🤣
Paul’s “I think it’s brilliant, James” was humanity at its finest. I think all of us need a Paul to look at us and tell us that “it” is brilliant, at some point in our lives.
@@KassaiLev I remember reading that he had a very bad week when he filmed bake off, something about a break up. So I imagine it was a nice thing on a bad day :).
@@AleksBen36 I know this is quite a bit later, and you may have heard this already, but he was running on 36 hours without having slept, and had really bad jetlag from traveling. ("The worst jetlag I've ever had in my life" as he put it) And that is on top of the breakup thing, so yeah, a really bad week is kind of an understatement. Lol
@@Hey-Its-DingoI have no idea how he made it through the show without crying on set honestly cause if that was me I would've lol, at the end of it he most definitely was well over 40hrs at that point, then till he got to his hotel and all....glad to see he looks better these days, he did say he tries taking better care of himself now
@@plestrange511 Spread the word! But side note: "He has a netflix special" is like saying "Herman Melville wrote a book." He has a 4-part, 4-hour Netflix special that's maybe the most brilliantly sustained piece of standup I've ever seen. Maybe second only to the first time I saw Steven Wright live and by the 90-minute point, I desperately wanted him to stop because my entire torso was in dreadful pain because of constant laughing.
What I love about this is how it shows that oftentimes some of the funniest, sarcastic people are people who are experiencing some mental anguish. I know during some of the worst parts of my life, the high that came from making others laugh got me through the hour.
"Started making it. Had a breakdown ... Bon appetit" was me and my classmate's motto during our English Lit A-Level when writing essays. That along with "All is not well in Waffleville" (I think that one is from a different cooking/baking show) XD
knowing how miserable and sleep deprived he was, it almost seems like he was on the verge of genuine tears when hollywood gave him the compliment at the end lol
Comedians like Acaster have a gift and a curse, they can take their utter anguish and turn it around and make it funny while feeling like they're dying inside. I came here right after watching Cold Lasagna Hate Myself 1999. Acaster walks the line between tragedy and comedy like a tightrope. He's brilliant, but there is clearly a cost.
In his standup special, James talked about this and what was going on in his life around the time this was filmed, and he talked about how it went viral. I hope he understands that a big reason it went viral is because a lot of us found this relatable -- I think it's fair to say "Started baking, had a breakdown, bon appetit" has become a meme at this point. Like, I think a lot of people have had the experience of having to muddle our way through a difficult series of tasks while going through one of the worst days of our lives.
It reminds me of a family story. My grandmother was making some kind of biscuit, and my grandfather came in from farm work and helped himself to one. "What do you think," said Gran. "Very nice," said Pa. "A bit chewy though." "Oh good," said Gran, "imagine how nice theyll be when theyre COOKED."
deborah DeborahR this is amazing I absolutely will check these out! I’ve watched pretty much every series of task master now so I’m looking for something new :) I loved the show “the wrong mans” from a few years ago with James Cordon and it got me into British humor (it was seriously incredible) and now Task Master got me into British Chat shows so I will 100% keep this list and start watching :) Thanks again!!!
"He did a whole bit about this on his latest standup, about how after day one of the competition he felt he'd done so badly he became depressed in his hotel room, and then his girlfriend broke up with him. Ended up being on the phone to The Samaritans for hours just to be able to finish the recording the following day. Still think this is a funny clip, but I watch it much differently now." - u/AlmostAndrew
I'd say this is good tv because he handled everything with a lot of wit and spontaneity for someone with no experience who's descended into such a state of Delirium due to lack of rest and preparation to the point of embarrassment. Well done!!👏👏
James has a hilarious stand up bit on this experience. Apparently, he was horribly jet lagged and hadn’t slept for 36 hours. He mentioned this fact on camera multiple times, but they edited it out, making him look like a chaotic mess. Still, I imagine that he earned some new fans … since his comments that did make it are comedic gold. It’s on RU-vid, so I definitely recommend giving it a watch!
Lots of people have mentioned his version of this in his show but the 1 bit I really remember, that I think says a lot for mental state at the time, is that he actually couldn't remember saying the famous "started making it, had a breakdown, bon appetit." He saw gifs of it appear and go viral later and got confused and had no memory.
I imagine it has something to do with being a charity/fundraiser episode. In what regard, I don’t know, but that seems to be the only identifiable difference between this and the episodes on Netflix.
@@justinotherday6199 This was for a televised fundraiser called Stand Up To Cancer, we do this in the UK every year. The normal Great British Bake Off is year round.
I’ve gone down such a British show rabbit hole lately and enjoying every minute of it. Went from big quiz to taskmaster and now I’m here. Lol love you’re shows Britain from America
Joe S I don’t know why that would matter? It’d be enjoyable to watch. Like I love these little snippets from the show and it’s hilarious. And honestly, that’s all that matters!
I know, me too! I don't care if I know all of the celebs, I know some of them and I have the internet if I want to know the rest 😋 lol. I just love this show so much!
Joe S I think you’re thinking too much into it 🤣 RuPauls Drag Race UK finally aired in the USA and I didn’t understand everything because you guys use all sorts of different words than we do and the snatch game is when the queens impersonate celebrities. They did this on the UK show also. I knew some of them but they didn’t say “oh we aren’t going to air this in the USA or other countries because they might not understand the celebrities impersonated or their use of slang.” That would just be ridiculous. Like Greenquartz said, if we are confused or need more info on someone or why they chose a certain bake, there’s a little thing called google. It’s not a problem with regular contestants so why does it matter if they are celebrities?
@@greenquartz To be honest, that's how the rest of the world watches American shows. We don't know who the people on it are or what they are talking about but we laugh if they are funny.
This has become such a legendary event that they're going to have to release all of the unedited footage on DVD with optional audio commentary from James. It will sell enough to cure cancer.
