I just read an article on Victor Sen Yung who portrayed Hop Sing. He died in 1980 of tragic circumstances - gas poisoning from a leak in his clay oven while making pottery. Although he was with Bonanza for the entire 14 seasons, several tv shows and was an accomplished chef with a cookbook published, at the time of his death, he was in dire financial straits. Pernell Roberts paid for his funeral expenses and gave the eulogy.
Intense episode about ignorance and racism. Historically accurate. Later to Japanese Americans, Mexican Americans--to people of color. It took guts for Hollywood to go out on a limb. Of course Pernell Roberts understood this, and he advocated for this on Bonanza. Makes me think of Marlon Brando, who also advocated for Human Rights in Hollywood. Yep, love--some of it--this show called Bonanza.
