One of the most profound memories of my time at A&M. I remember waking up in the morning to get ready for class when my roommate told me about it. It was hard for me to believe what I was seeing on the TV when I turned it on. That game the next weekend was the greatest football game I've ever seen. Somehow all of us there knew there was no way in hell we were going to lose that game.
That may sound like a lot but it's really a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of lumber that's used in any state. That being said, I saw a film about this which indicated that the engineering behind the construction really wasn't sound. They got away with it for a number of years but it was bound to happen sooner or later, not unlike the Space Shuttle disasters. According to Wikipedia they've reinstated the practice off-campus with a better design.
