Bong Joon Ho and Lee Isaac Chung Talk ‘Minari,’ Family and Working With Steven Yeun

Last year, Bong Joon Ho made history and won four Academy Awards with his film “Parasite,” detailing a down-on-their-luck Korean family ingratiating themselves into the lives of a wealthy household. Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” describes a different family; based on Chung’s childhood experiences, the film casts Steven Yeun and Yeri Han as Korean immigrants in the 1980s who move to Arkansas to start a new life as farmers. Alan Kim plays their son, David, who balks when his grandmother (a scene-stealing Yuh-jung Youn) comes to live with them.
The two filmmakers discussed creating on-screen families, telling personal stories and their work with Yeun as a part of Variety’s inaugural FYC Fest.

idk why i find it so satisfying to hear both of them choosing different languages to speak that are more comfortable for them throughout this interview but also, understanding each other perfectly :")

What's also interesting is one is doing it from a Korean American standpoint and the other from a Korean who had studied English. They came from opposite spectrums of the language and met in the middle but with a different perspective in language despite both having a culture in common.

I loved that so much! And I also thought it was cool when they'd switch to their second-best language based on which language they thought could express their thoughts best at the moment, like when Bong Joon-ho was talking about Youn Yuh-jung, he switched to English. You would see director Bong do that a lot in Parasite press especially when he was with Choi Woo-shik. People who speak more than one language will code-switch a lot and I just think it's super cool to watch it happen

me(korean)and my cousin(asian-american) used to do that! I only used korean and my cousin only used english but yet we understand each other perfectly

For me it feels very homey-as me and my family switch between Korean and English a lot (tho, I mostly just speak English). I really like, too!

It's common in many households where the parents are immigrants and the kids are Americanized. I understand more Cantonese speech than speaking it. If I attempt to speak Cantonese, I sound and feel like a four-year-old.

Yes , but he needs an interpreter! Does Lee Isaac even understand everything that Bong joon ho is saying in Korean?? Why didnt they have an interpreter??? Lee Isaac isn't even fluent in Korean!!! Roflol.

@@JJ-yu6og korean is actually quite instinctual. a lot of non-english languages are like that. from the tone and certain vocabulary, you kinda get what the other person is saying. also there might've been an off-screen interpreter! maybe through a live stream text box or something. the interview went smooth enough

It's two people who both work in the same occupation, so they "talk shop" using the same work terminology and jargon as shorthand. There's no need to do any extra explanation that has to be done when talking with a lay person. You get this same situation when you have actors interviewing actors.

@@RaymondHng I think there's a certain (large) set of us who like these videos for precisely this reason; they go straight into insightful questions that explore the craft with so much appreciation for each other. Some of us don't even work in film but love&appreciate the art so much. I find these so much more rewarding to watch than talk-show interviews and actively seek them out on yt.

Bong Joon Ho really loves movies, contemporary movies. He talks about them with great enthusiasm and that makes me so happy. Some directors pine for some "great age of movies" but not him he respects the past while enjoying the present.

I really appreciate these interviews; the directors/actors/etc. always ask each other very pointed, provocative and meaningful questions while remaining immensely respectful of each other's craft. It's a breath of fresh air from the typical press junket interviews that repeat the same banal questions that also often border on irrelevancy to the actual film.

I loved his saying that "if you get over the 1inch barrier on the screen, there are so many more amazing films to discover." I believe this probably had a great effect on the judges criteria and mentality. And this fact is SO true. Some of my best films and lasting impacts were foreign films.

Absolutely satisfying interview, understated and so insightful. Pro to pro, 2 creatives exchanging precious notes on their work processes. I was also struck by the code switching back and forth between English and Korean, as Bong and Chung expressed themselves in the language they respectively felt most at home with. Chung is such a modest guy, but you could feel the mutual respect and appreciation. Between the economy of 25 days of shooting for Minari and Chloe Zhao’s naturalistic approach on Nomadland, one feels that Asian artists are beginning to find a self-assured voice and place in Americana.

This made me teary. Asian creativity stems from deep and profound history and cultural heritage. This is shaping the cinema and filmmaking of our time. I’m incredibly proud as an Asian immigrant, and encouraged because I would also like to pursue filmmaking. I and my generation and generations after us are incredibly blessed to have directors such as these two and Chloe Zhao to look up to. ♥️

I feel like Guillermo del Toro and Bong Jun Ho are the most eloquent directors. I noticed how Bong really liked the distance and lack of sentimentality, which mirrors his own ethos/modus operandi. I was so happy to hear Bong's detailed praise for my girl Han Yeri! I underestimated Lee Isaac Chung's fluency in Korean bc he has an accent and can't speak Korean well, but he understands everything! Anyways, I spoiled this movie for myself 🤦🏻‍♀️ but can't wait to watch when the price drops from $20 or hopefully in theaters!

Part of the difficulty speaking Korean, as an American for me, is the difference in sentence structure. Placement of nouns, verbs, participles, etc. also the Honorifics are not ingrained due to lack of verbal practice and exposure.

I think the actress who played Monica was absolutely superb and if it were up to me she would not only be nominated for best actress at the academy awards she would win it! Here’s my question....what is the actress’ given name and which is her family name? Round about 4.44 Bong refers to her as Han Yeri but the subtitle is Yeri Han. In many online articles the name changes from Yeri Han and Han Yeri. Is there a written convention to a Korean name that is different to the spoken convention?I am interested to understand this properly. Many thanks in advance. 😁

@@Nicefro1976 family name: Han Given name: Yeri Koreans put the family name name first. Traditionally, the given name, 2 syllables, is part generational (siblings) and the individual identifier. Those can be in either 2nd or 3rd syllable; usually depends on what the fortune teller recommends. Now, I think it’s whatever the parents choose.

It's such a treat to see Bong Joon Ho talk one-on-one with directors. I saw a special screening of Memoirs of Murder with a special interview with Edgar Wright and it was just them fawning over each other's movies. He makes these conversations so genuine and casual at the same time.

this film is one of the best really. The casting was superb, especially Steven and YJ. Allan Kim showed depth no young actor in recent years have shown, and Han Yeri, who i clearly believed was the heart of this film, should have gotten a nod too (that last scene with Steven at the side alley of a store was deeply moving, and only an Actress with her caliber can deliver). I'm thinking, is the water in South Korea reallly that diffrent? How is this country producing these great acts? Like seriously? BTS? Bong Joon Ho? Now the cast of Minari? (arghhh). Director Bong was right in saying that Steven will get a nod (that's a true visionary)
