My favorite thing about the show is that they gave Kimiko a name. I feel like she has more agency and more nuance in the show than in the comic. For the time however, the comic had been a pretty fair (for the most part) portrayal of an Asian character-back when the stoic badass Asian lady trope was still new. Nowadays, the trope has been pretty played out. Kimiko in the show feels like a subversion of this trope altogether. She does not have the compulsion to kill like in the comics. Like Frenchie said, “she just wants to go home.” That makes her a totally more relatable character in my opinion, and for her to also have those moments of simple pleasures (watching nature documentaries or painting her nails) makes those tiny everyday things mean so much more to someone who previously never had the proper chance to enjoy. She is way more than a mute killing machine. She is Kimiko. (She’s also my favorite!!)

Steve Rogers I looooooooove Kimiko. I also like that they hinted at her possibly speaking in future season(s). I went to the show’s first promotional panel when I didn’t know anything about the premise, but I saw the roster of names scheduled to appear and the cast was really impressive (though Karen alone would have been reason enough for me to go). I was googling the premise and basic trivia about the comics while waiting for the panel to happen and I was IRRITATED when I saw that Karen would be playing a character called “The Female” and even more irked when I found out the character doesn’t speak. When the Q&A happened, I got on the mic and asked Karen about it and I was ELATED when she shared with me and the big crowd that her character was going to get a name. Those types of stereotypes need to stay in the past. I love the way they’ve given her character layers and built this beautiful relationship with Frenchie. It’s so powerful. 🥺🥰🔥
