They should go back to school...I did! I was locked up in the mid nineties (for small drug possession charges); got clean in 99’; worked in construction for until the recession and went back to school in 2011. I got five Business degrees from Merritt College (in Oakland), transferred to UC Berkeley; affiliated with the Underground Scholars Initiative (a student club for formerly incarcerated students) at Cal and graduated in 2016 (at the first ever USI graduation); transferred to the University of San Francisco; became a founding member of FICGN (Formerly Incarcerated College Graduates Network); started working for a program for formerly incarcerated students at Laney College (in Oakland) and now I’m employed by the college district I got my degrees from, and traveling the country speaking on panels about my experiences. We do change and our lived experience matters! Especially now that we’re moving away from mass incarceration and towards education!
