No in the book they have a casual relationship, but Elena and Damon are end game. It would be good to do a little Google search like "TVD books last page" and read it before speaking. They shouldn't have never be anything but friends, because Damon's love of his life is Elena and he respected Bonnie too much to treat her as distraction while waiting for Elena. 🙄

Do a simple Google search "last page of the vampire diaries book " go to images and read it. Per reddit:(tobiasmacedon) The last book published book LJ Smith wrote was The Return: Midnight. That book had a Stelena ending. Damon died in that book but he was resurrected by a starball. The next two trilogies, The Hunters, and Salvation were written by ghostwriters. Elena chooses Stefan at the end of The Hunters Trilogy. But Stefan dies in the first book of the Salvation Trilogy. In the third book, Elena essentially goes back in time to rewrite history (long story). So she ends up with Damon.

Smith was very happy, because she said that a girl should never end up with a somone out of loyalty, not out of love. S don't make up story to validate what has not happen, never happend, is not real, and doesn't make sense and woul have made TVD a very bad book, horrible TV show and a terrible message to young women.

Sadly of the show runner/creators treated Kat pretty badly and they refused to let her and Damon have a relationship in the show despite Ian Somerhalder and Kat wanting that to happen
