The only exception I can think of was in the 2000s when he had The Hardy Boyz, The Dudley Boyz and Edge and Christian. All three of them were over as hell and made money hand over fist.

The Road Warriors on Dark Side of the Ring showed why Vince Vince dislikes tag teams. Two people he has to pay. He screwed over Tully & Arn as well as the Steiners over pay.
@Matt-cr4vv
@Matt-cr4vv Год назад
This is what I’ve always assumed was why Vince has never been big on teams. If a team is a top level team you have to pay two guys top level pay compared to one guy top level pay. But even so it doesn’t totally explain it because usually the formula is the main event gets a percentage of the house from the start. For example, I think they’ve said the main event would get like 20% (I don’t remember the percentage) of the pot to pay everybody. And if it was a tag team match that same money for that position of a match just split four ways v two ways. So even then it shouldn’t make a difference. But there’s also the cost to fly double the people to shows compared to one person I guess. But as much as I love Arn I have never totally felt his gripe with how Vince paid them was entirely reasonable. I understand the issue he and Tully took when they realized that they were on pace to make less than they had been when Vince had told them that they’d earn more with him. That part of things I think they were fair to have an issue with since he had told them they’d earn more and they hadn’t been. The aspect where I don’t think they were fully reasonable was expecting him to write them both a check immediately to catch them up on things. As Arn tells it Vince had asked them to let him catch them up and said he would but that they didn’t trust he’d do it and that when he wouldn’t write them each a $50K check to catch them up they turned in their notice. I get why they felt the way they did but to me it would’ve been more reasonable to have given him up until you had to provide the notice to show signs he was making it right. If let’s say you give him a month and it isn’t improving then absolutely given notice but doesn’t feel reasonable to have expected him to just write the checks. But he did fuck them in terms of Tully and how he paid Arn double until he was done to show he could. That part I’ll agree with. But I also did find it a tad silly that anybody took him at his word that they’d make more than they were. To me there’s a reason those contacts had zero guarantee to them - if he truly meant that when he was saying it he’d have been giving you a guarantee over what you’d make like the downsides that eventually came. The existence of him having you sign something with literally zero guarantee to it for me says it all of just how much stock should go into any promise of making more money being anything other than making your new signing excited to come on board. Shitty but realistic sadly.

Vince loves to break up tag teams and also take two random guys and put them together as a team. Rock & Foley, Edge & Orton, Stone Cold & Triple H, Miz & Morrison, Kane & Taker, Jericho & Big Show, Kane & Daniel Bryan, Hulk Hogan & Edge... just to name a few. For every one example of the New Day, Vince has 15 other examples of breaking a successful tag team up & putting together 2 completely random guys and making them be a team.

it's dumb because you can do much more with tag teams as Paul Heyman showed in 2002. you can have the one on one matches between a member of each team, you can do it with the other two, if i was booking a promotion for 52 weeks a year it would make sense to want tag teams that seems like easy matches to set up for weeks and weeks.

@hoopsheavenpa
@hoopsheavenpa 4 года назад
Well said!
@Matt-cr4vv
@Matt-cr4vv Год назад
There’s still some managers involved but it’s few and far between. Usually nowadays you only see it when it’s some guy who’s got all the makings of being a top level guy but falls short on the mic. An example would be Heyman was with Brock for a lot of years because Brock was top level at everything besides his promo skills so he had Paul. But then you saw recently he split from Paul and actually was solid doing his own promos when they let him just be himself as a character. Another guy who’s had a manager over recent years has been Lashley who is another one who isn’t the greatest on the mic but checks every other box. But the decline of managers I actually understand. Unless someone really needs one to hit a high level tier I imagine it’s hard to justify the cost to pay a person to be on the road with someone regularly as their manager. Obviously they wouldn’t be making the money they the wrestler would be but it’s a decent chunk of added expense to pay somebody let’s say 2-300K maybe to have that role with a guy. And that cost isn’t gonna be seen as worth it unless the guy they’re with is a top tier guy drawing a lot of money. The company isn’t going to want to pay somebody a six figure check to be with somebody they may see as a mid tier guy I imagine unless they think that having that manager is likely to elevate them substantially to justify the cost. Even when you hear Corny talk about what he and the Midnights made back in the day Corny being with them meant the team cost a third more than it did without him. But Corny was so good and made the unit so much better he was worth that cost. Not sure the company sees things that way too often and hence why it seems to only be for guys who are already high level.

Never was much of a WWE(F) fan over the years but loved watching Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart as tag team whenever they wrestled. Just something about them always caught my attention and I had to watch. Of anyone in the NE, I thought Hart and Neidhart could bring their team gimmick south, especially into Crockett's and it would plug right in. Loved to have seen that. Hart Foundation as faces vs. Midnight Express as heels. WOW!

Thing I never get is when you have so much TV time to push stuff, wouldn't it be better to have a strong singles and tag team division? You add a strong Cruiser weight and Women's division, that is 4 separate divisions you can try draw interest for PPVs and House Shows

Vince seems to think that tag teams are an effective way to get a singles star over because of Shawn and Bret to a lesser extent. It's why he's so eager to break teams up and why most of the wrestlers in those teams went nowhere.

The main event used to get the biggest bonuses for PPVs (probably different now with the network). If you have a singles match in the main event you only need to pay 2 bonuses. If you have a tag team match in your main event you need to give bonuses to 4 guys.

I would think a good strategy would be to get every world title that covers a specialty over as a big deal. So aside from the world heavyweight title you also have the world tag team titles, world cruiserweight title, and world women's title all regarded as top tier main event stuff. Creatively this provides a lot of mileage because if you can use these other titles in the main event then you don't have to feature the world heavyweight champion on every big card. Every time you have a successful title defense the challenger has to job or you have to have some BS finish which ultimately makes the champ look weak because he couldn't beat the challenger. But every title match has to have one of those finishes or a title change. So if you can get away with having a title get defended 4 or 5 times a year instead of 10 or 12 then you don't have to burn through credible challengers as quickly or hot potato the title around or have your champ look like a dweeb that's relying on DQs, count outs and draws to hang on to his title.

I definitely agree that a lot of attitude era stuff does not hold up well. At all. But the VKM and Stone Cold story line drove things. The DX/Nation stuff was solid while it lasted. Mankind/Cactus Jack was incredible until Mankind became sort of a parody of himself. I hate when Vince puts two singles together and let them beat legit teams left and right. Also to some degree I think he has tried for years to duplicate the excitement when they Steiners broke up, but doesn't realize that the result was based to a large degree on how long they were together. He thinks he can get the same reaction with teams that have been together for six weeks.

Thus he lumped a bunch of wrestlers together who had no chemistry whatsoever and called them "tag teams" to put belts on: Anyone remember the "Rhythm and the Blues"---The Honky Tonk Man and Greg Valentine together? Is it a case of Vince doesn't think the old wrestling psychology still works in the modern era? Or is it that the "writers" can't be taught the psychology of wrestling? It doesn't seem that complicated to me. The argument that it was easier in the 80s when you were producing an hour of Superstars a week has some truth, squash jobber match, promo, squash jobber match, squash tag jobber match, vignette, squash jobber match, promo, squash jobber match with run-in, main event lower card wrestlers wrestle go off the air right at comeback spot to cut off spot. Build a heel to throw Hulk Hogan twice year at big show, set up intercontinental championship rivalry to steal the big show, boring match to bring the energy down at big show, tag match-high spot fest to bring it back up, slow match to bring it down go to the bathroom hit concessions lower energy for Hulks entrance slow match brings energy way down till "Hulk Up" spot energy goes through the roof Hogan wins. Post-match ritual is all about bringing fans to a frenzy. The show ends on highest note of a rollercoaster of ups and downs.

Drew McIntyre beat the OC on his own with little effort on Raw this year. Seriously, I get that they were pushing Drew as a credible badass, but this is way too much. WWE’s tag team division is basically a job squad at this point.

I always noticed that tag team wrestling took a back seat with Vince. He put some of the most "mis-matched" guys together for a tag team. Who can ever forget "Jeri-Show" (Chris Jericho and Big Show). Or when he put the WWF tag belts on the "Colossal Collection" (King Kong Bundy and Andre the Giant) or the worst was when the Headbangers--a couple of glorified indie scrubs--won the tag belts when things were at the worst for the WWF in the mid-90s! I just thought these were all dumb moves.

DNAsGhostzHouze During the time they were teaming regularly (2001-ish), they were not on top of the card. Otherwise, they'd only team for a few weeks every few months occasionally, or would feud.

I agree that you shouldn’t regularly have your top guy beat your tag team champions, with the exception of the rare skin of your teeth come from behind squeaker. That being said I disagree that the members of your champion tag team should individually be on equal par as your world or heavyweight champion (let just call it tier 1 individual champion) The way I see it your #1 guy is your champion, your #2 is either his challenger or your second tier individual champion , second tier champion is right behind the challenger for your top champion , your tag team champions should individually fall somewhere around your tier 2 champion or his challenger bringing up the rear of this is your challenger for the tag team champions and then followed by your special division or gimmick champions (cruiserweight, TV, regional, developmental , and specialty match champions (hardcore , king of the ring , whatever)

it sucks though; a tag team wrestling is possibly one of the best things about the WWE at the moment; as you have cesaro and sheamus; and the uso's, the new day don't really count because they are a stable. And when the new day were tag team champions for 443 days or what ever, a lot of the time that was because the wwe didn't know what the do with the titles and the titles were overlooked. I also believe that although new day have been great for the past couple of years that they need something fresh. as wwe are sucking these guys knobs; especially Xavier woods, who I hate' because if they are supposed to have great tag teams in wwe then why did the new day hold the wwe/raw tag titles for 443 days lose them and then only 7 months later win the smackdown tag team titles; give the asencion a run with the belts or a team who doesn't joke around and act like idiots. The New day are a prime example of what wrestling looked like in the middle of the pg era; hell one of the reasons that they are relevant is because of stupid breakfast cereal

The Little Shaman Healing The Shield weren't top guys yet, & were only put back together to make Roman get cheered more & possibly turn Dean. Y2AJ lasted like 2 weeks. Owens & Jericho were never true top guys. Neither were Wyatt & Orton. Edge & Orton is an exception. Team Hell NO! were not top guys at the time, Brothers of Destruction were no longer on top when they teamed regularly (2001-ish). Rock 'N' Sock was an exception. Bryan & Punk were not a tag team.
