Rinry! Nostalgia win for all your videos :D Thats why I love watching them Kirby Adventure was my favorite minigames, especially quick draw and boss fight Also I'm glad you informed me about Super Street Fighter 4's revival of the Bonus Stage :D Thank you for this awesome video :)
The Sonic stages took me back lol. My first experience in bonus rounds were the ones from the old Karate Kid game on NES. Catching flies with the chopsticks was cool but took me a while to figure out the swinging hammer. As always your encyclopedic knowledge of video games blows me away. Amazing job, Rinry!
Congratulations on making it onto the Thatguywiththeglasses latest blogs. This is better than most of the articles or videos that show up on the bottom of the main page daily. Good video, even though it made me a little depressed that both my Nintendo and my Sega both broke in the last year or two. I can't believe the NES made it over the 20 year mark and the Sega didn't.
Loved the video, Rinry! Gee, I miss those things, fighting games had some awesome bunus stages back in the day.... I love KA, but I take Kirby's Super Star any day. Beautiful work, as always!
Balloon Fight has some of my most nostalgic Bonus Stages ever. It's kind of cool that the game remained as a single game in 8-Bit. It's becoming iconic. I love how the Bonus Levels are coming back in Super Street Fighter 4...despite their lack of purpose. It's just for the sake of nostalgia. I think the Sonic series has some of the coolest bonus stages.
Okay, that was amazing. I was just thinking about what bonus stages I remembered, and right when you were finishing the one before it, I thought of Paperboy. I'd think you were psychic if you'd have realized I mean the SNES version.
wow an analytical look at bonus stages in games... great video! The one that comes to mind when I think of bonus stages is the elf bonking stage from the beat 'em gauntlet. You would awake beside the camp fire to elf's stealing your magic and you'd have to bash them so they would relinquish your potions! Dunno why that one comes to mind, its not very exciting, but its one I remember!
@ToadTReborn That's because the EWJ stage is a minigame that must be completed before you progress in the game, which is what I was talking about when that clip was up ;)
You forgot to mention the bonus levels the Donkey Kong Country Trilogy and DK 64. These are special stages that has big impact on the games as a whole. In DKC1, even if it is different text, Cranky Kong will admit that you were (nearly) as good as a video game player character as he once was. In both DK2 and 3, the tokens that you get'll get from the Bonus Barrels will lead you to the extra endnings that happens after you have defeated the final boss, same goes when you get all the Golden Bananas in DK64 (most of them you get from the Bonus Stages).
Very interesting video. While I do say bonus stages are fun, I do like hidden stages that either the developer didn't intend you to find, or wanted you to find but took a ridiculous sort of effort getting to it. It doesn't (normally) Reward anything but the satisfaction of the eyes seeing what hasn't been seen by everyone.
@UberUberLeet91 Nope. At that point in the video I was talking about minigames that are necessary to complete in order to progress in a game and how they're not bonus games.
Ah yes...bonus stages. Haven't seen them recently in my current games. Someone needs to come out with a game that's filled with just bonus stages of retro titles. Maybe WarioWare like. Well, it would probably be impossible to get all the devs to agree but I can still dream. AWESOME VID!
So I got bored and I came across one of your videos and now im watching all of them... but I have to say about the Earthworm Jim "bonus level" (when you face Psycrow in the races after every level...) If you loose you have to fight a boss which is contradictory to what you are saying. (Still love the videos ^_^ go earthworm jim!)
I play a lot of RPGs. They have bonus stages in the form of sidequests. These are quests that are apart from the main quest of the game. I have enjoyed the sidequest part of RPGs since Final Fantasy 7.
Awesome video. I love bonus stages. The Kirby ones were fun enough to become one of the main things I played on SuperStar/Fun Pack. Also, it's Dedede, not Dede.
