Miss Rinry, I played the original Megaman game back in 1988 when I was 17. It was an interesting and okay game. The most annoying thing was that damn Yellow Devil. Fortunately, I figured out a little trick with the electricity weapon. When you first fire it and it touches the enemy, you hit select over and over until that enemy is destroyed..

"Cheetahmen 2. Now, this game is a rare find, and if you want a piece of this awesome sequel: it's going to cost you! Copies of Cheetahmen 2 can go for hundreds of dollars on eBay...if a game is worth this much...it must be the best sequel ever!!! Naw, this game sucks, and was never released for a reason!" ^ That's a fantastic line. Who else laughed uncontrollably?

Awesome reviews but i must say i think megaman three did it justice as well as megaman 9 and 10. But i think three was really great on the lines of 2. Then id like to say pokemon gold and silver are a direct squeal to red and blue as you play through a new region but then return to the old game 2 years later. I think Gold and silver really really expanded immensely on the Pokemon franchise making it what it is today. When chrystal was released it was the first time your Pokemon actually moved!

Great video. :) I remember buying Mega Man and plugging it in and going "what is this game?!" Love the little humorous bits you threw in there (mega man 2 cursing to get that extra life only to not have a way out. hah!) I must be the only one who got used to the DD2 controls because of playing Renegade in the arcades so much. Yet, it was the addition of the hyper knee and uppercut that added to the fun. Subbed.

I am glad that you mentioned Mega Man 2, because it's my favorite one in the series, and probably my favorite NES game. Mega Man 2 also has the best music on the NES in my opinion. I'm still undecided between this and Super Mario 3 foe which is my #1 NES game. I also had no idea Mega Man 1 was rare, my local video store had it, and I used to rent it and beat it over a weekend. When you said Cheetahmen 2 for first place I was like WTF! LOL

Poor Castlevania II gets no respect. :( I really liked that game, and to this day consider it one of the best NES titles. Never understood all the hate it gets. Yeah, it's cryptic and needs to be played with a guide if you're not familiar with its secrets... but the same can be said for a LOT of games from that era! Still, great list, and your videos are always really entertaining, Rinry. Plus, you have one of those voices that just makes me happy whenever I hear it. ;)

This was a great vid! I thoroughly enjoyed it! TMNT II was awesome. It wasn't until much later that I realized that Raphael (my fave turtle) was missing his unique rolling kick special. The game designers did this to compensate for the short reach of his sais. The NES version was slightly rushed and omitted it. Speaking of one hit killer moves, the flying knee in double dragon II was godlike!

They tightened up the controls in Mega Man 2. In Mega Man, when you stop running left or right, he slides a little. He slides a bit in the sequels, but not nearly as much. That was THE biggest improvement from Mega Man to Mega Man 2.

About SMB2: yes, it's a real sequel, many people thinks that was originally designed to be the Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic, but the truth is that this game was originally developed to be Super Mario Bros 2, later Nintendo scrapped it because Nintendo wasn't satisfied, some time later Nintendo retake the project changing the character and the name to Doki Doki Panic, and after the release of Doki Doki Panic, Nintendo improved the gameplay in some parts and returned the the original idea: a sequel of Super Mario Bros. Maybe you can think that SMB2 it's too different than Super Mario Bros, but also, Super Mario Bros it's too different than Mario Bros (in the same way that Zelda 2 it's very different than TLOZ), in that time, the formula for Mario wasn't clear yet
@maitlandvt
@maitlandvt 10 лет назад
***** Well, they did call it "Super Mario Bros. 2"... I'm just sayin...
@Shot97
@Shot97 10 лет назад
***** The Japanese Super Mario 2 was a shameful repackaging of the original game with absolutely no redeeming value on its own. It was released far too quickly, to separate cash from people who enjoyed the first game before they forgot about it. It was also released for the Famicom Disk System (WHICH NOBODY SEEMS TO PONDER THE ECONOMICS OF), which would have been cheaper for Nintendo to make copies of, and as it was designed for people to go to stores and have disks rewritten with a new game, would have been cheaper for the Japanease... While in America, in cartridge form, we would have been spending 50 bucks for nothing! Is it making sense now? Do you even think Japan looked at SMB2 as the REAL sequel? They were just biding time before SMB3 came out, otherwise they would have released it on cartridge so more people would have bought it! While it would not have been that difficult for a Japanese audience in their teens, it would have been disastrous to release that game in America to an audience that was overwhelmingly children. It was not "too hard for Americans" it was too hard for children! Lets see the Japanese gamer's of that era try some American RPG's made for the adult computer audience of the time and tell me again how American's can't handle a challenge... SMB2 USA may not be the true sequel by date, but it is a thousand times better than SMB2 Japan and if we are all honest with ourselves if we could only play the original or SM2 USA I think most people would choose the 2nd. Super Mario Bros. was the first of its kind, it spawned FAR too many rip offs, and honestly makes the NES a bit of a joke in terms of diversity... Once that game was made, everything else was just a copy of it. You will find far better variety of interesting games on computers of the era. It gets a lot of props these days for being the first, but that does not mean it was the best. As a kid having both those games, I preferred the 2nd until the 3rd came along. Super Mario 2 Japan is more aptly titled Super Mario 1.5 or Super Mario Expansion. If it was not for the controversy surrounding the American version it would have rightfully been forgotten. But controversy or not, Super Mario 2 USA would always be remembered. Nintendo of America didn't always make the right calls, but they sure did with that game! Nintendo of Japan wanted to cash in as quickly as possible, that's why they abandoned Doki Panic before it would have become the true sequel. And while SMB3 crushes both of them, hell, it crushes anything that followed it... OF ALL GAMES WHY COULDN'T THOSE IDIOTS RELEASE A MODIFIED SMB3!? No... We got Super Mario World, which is okay, different, but not quite as good... At least the American Audience was spared the let down of having a game not meet its expectations for one more game. The Japanese had to know immediately that they were getting crap. While in retrospect you may feel cheated out of the true sequel, no one felt cheated at the time. Come on now, do you look down upon it because it's not what Japan got, or is it because it's different? Do you look down on Castlevania 2, Zelda 2? Games that tried to give the players a bit of variety while still retaining the characters you love and not insulting you with the exact same game... The Super Mario 2 story is in an interesting one, but I'm sick and tired of hearing about it... The Super Mario 2 released here is my Super Mario 2... Just like the 2nd console released by Sega will always be known as the Genesis, not the Mega Drive... If in your area it was called the Mega Drive, I get it, if you're Japanese I get calling our version fake, but if you're American, shut up with the Mega Drive, and shut up about Super Mario 2. It's a good game, and I'm quite happy it doesn't exactly "feel" like the first... I would have been pulling my hair out as a 4 year old playing what the Japanese got. Keeping in mind it was released on DISK over there, it would have been cheaper, I can forgive Japan a little bit... But to release that game in America at full price, what the hell are you thinking? Everyone needs to just factor in the whole situation. The American audience being children... and the Japanese needing a game for their new floppy disk system which made cheaper games... Both of those facts are completely ignored, when they speak volumes.

I just find it strange that a lot of the games that were actually good games when they were released just completely fell out of favor with time. TMNT 1 and Double Dragon 3 are two of those games. Back then, there were very different standards for what was considered a good game, and challenge was actually hugely important. In short: If you could master a game in a day's sitting and beat it every time, then the game wasn't good. Both of those above games were very challenging so that you couldn't beat all of their levels the first time. Double Dragon 3 was the best example of an extremely challenging game. The game had an unforgiving difficulty, but I eventually got so good at it that I could beat it without a second player and not lose a single character doing it. Back then, while we liked all of the things like tight controls, level design, and everything being comparable to its source material, we weren't very picky about these things back then. A game could have bad controls, but you still played it for the reason that it was a challenge. That's why a lot of the games were designed as they were to add difficulty that was seemingly unnecessary, because the companies knew that what we wanted was an experience that would last because every triumph turned a new page.

Thats a tough one. Skate or Die II wasnt very well received, but Skate or Die was originally for the Commodore 64 and was ported to many computers (and consoles). I do agree, there was certainly a difference from the typical Konami sounding port of Skate or Die and the Rob Hubbard sound programmed and composed Skate or Die II. With any Rob Hubbard composed game, you pay more for the music than you do the game (and Skate or Die II was no exception).

@turron83 Yea, I agree. Castlevania 2 is one of my favorite titles on the nes and was what truly got me into the series. Although, it was a rather strange and unexpected sequel to it's predecessor (much like Zelda II). The game is also very "rough around the edges", having several noticeable flaws. Basically what I'm getting at, is that I understand why some people hate the game, but I can also understand why others love the game (like myself). Its a mixed bag indeed! ^_^

Agreed with most of the list. Except Ninja Gaiden I is my favourite from the NES ones in that series-- A true classic. It was excruciatingly hard but the game and the story was so damn good that you just had to beat it. As a kid I also liked SMB2 more because it had more varied content. Got a bit of a soft spot for Megaman 1 as it was my first Megaman played; but yeah-- 2 is better.

I always considered Super Mario Bros 2 to be the greatest nes mario game and SMB3 leaves me cold. I did adore Super Mario World, which builds on the ideas developed in SMB3, but I always wondered what nintendo could have done if they'd opted to use SMB2 as the main inspiration for their snes epic. Large non linear levels, making magic doors to mirror worlds, those scary masks chasing you whenever you collect a key. Much that could have been built on.

@Chad9976 Nonsense. SMB2 improved on the controls and play options, introduced tons of much more interesting obstacles, and had far better graphics than SMB1. The only reason SMB1 is so fondly remembered is because it came with the console and everyone had it, and because it's viewed as the first in a long-running, successful, and popular series.
