Mid-week bonus video. All the updates on The Inspector's respiratory infection. Come with me, start to finish, on this journey, and find out what I learned from it. Vet visits, bacteria cultures and injections. See what you might be in for if your snake has an RI. Do I have to rip out the entire bioactive enclosure and start over?

Don't love when the "extra videos" have to be about unwell snakes, however, very happy to hear that everything is going to be alright. Keep up the good work sir. 🐍🐍

This was incredibly helpful! It turns out that my brand new bullsnake has an RI and I’m doing some research. I’ll be scheduling a vet appt as well. Thank you for this!

Good deal. The regular program is always fun, but sometimes, when things get real, it's good to just turn on the camera, and just do the thing. As it happens, as you understand it. In real time.

@jefffarr4219

Sounds like he’s already recovering! Just keep the temps and humidity high to help ensure he continues to defeats the infection. Bacteria cultures that may give a snake an RI are almost usually present in the first place, but too low of temps/humidity will allow those bacteria’s to develop an infection. Just wrap a few inches worth of heat tape around the bottom outside of the enclosure- that’ll raise the substrate temps by just a few degrees, thus leaving him just a little bit warmer to be able to fight infections.
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 3 года назад
Yep, hes all good at this point. I raised the temps a couple weeks ago when I discovered the RI. It's knocked out at this point though :-)

What is the name of the uv-c gadget? Just uv wand? What size is mr. Inspector's hide box? The black square one I mean. Glad to see he is doing well. I do like these vlog type of videos in between the regular ones. Keeps balance to the channel.
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 3 года назад
Thank you! That's just called a UV sanitizer wand. Not sure what the brand is but it's on Amazon. I think the hide is considered a medium - it's 6"x9"

Glad to see the inspector is back to normal. I'll be getting one of those UVC lamps to help with cleaning. I've had my ball python for about two weeks now and I'm sure I have a lot to learn. Would you recommend a full substrate change every 30ish days?
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 3 года назад
Thanks Lucas! Congrats on the new snake! Yes, I do a full substrate change every month on all non-bioactive enclosures :-)

Hey Bob, check the wavelength on the light. Should be 260nm to be effective. If you need to test it, hold the uvc wand over a banana for 15 minutes. If the skin turns brown you will know that it is at least uvc. I was curious since fishkeepers will use uv to help kill algae and bacteria.
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 3 года назад
Cool! I'm gonna do the banana trick because that sounds fun. This wand is said to be 260-280nm.
@wwlchen1178
@wwlchen1178 3 года назад
@@GreenRoomPythons uvc will work if it is real and the proper intensity but may not be practical. It's really impractical to break down a bioactive setup and clean regularly. You would figure a soak in either a bleach solution or ammonia would kill just about anything. One thing i was toying with was possibly using a clear shallow tray or tub as a base under the substrate. It would allow you to remove most of the setup without disturbing it too much in case it needed cleaning. Or if you used cubed bins in a series you could move and adjust things more easily. It would be easy enough to hide with a little substrate mixture around the side.
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 3 года назад
@@wwlchen1178 yeah, I'm not breaking anything down in the bioactive. I'm just using the wand on the cork bark that I can pull out - and occasionally on the surface of the enclosure like in the video. Its not a complete solution, but along with F10 and good spot cleaning, should keep any dangerous bacteria at bay. Your tray idea is interesting though!

I'm making a natural enclosure with a background but not bioactive per say, I wonder how I will keep this clean. What is the wand called???

I'm not sure if my new BP has an RI or not (gotta take her to the vet soon), but I'm currently battling mold in her enclosure, and she looks like she could maybe be a bit dehydrated, so I want to bump up the temps and humidity for the potential RI, but it's hard to do that while trying to avoid mold :( it's such an exhausting issue and idk what to do :(
@icxcnika9399

Glad he's doing better. If you had a UVB light in the enclosure, he would be able to bask and increase his vitamin d levels to cope with the infection, also vets often hold a snake upside down to allow fluid in the lungs go drain out so a high perch or branch would allow him to perform this function himself. Might be worthwhile for breeders and collectors to keep an intensive care enclosure with all the bells and whistles, UVB, UVA, deep heat projectors, vitamin supplements etc, for circumstances like these or for periodic nourishment of their health. If you do have a UVB in his enclosure it would be interesting, though disappointing, to find out it didn't work.
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 3 года назад
UVB are always beneficial, though most ball python keepers don't use them just because this species doesn't require it and the snakes aren't generally out when the lights are on to get the benefits from it. Deep heat projectors are great too! I've considered switching my CHE out for one of those.

@@GreenRoomPythons just another thought on the UVB, of course you're right - most BP keepers dont use them, but it would also be true that most bp keepers dont run a bio active setup. Full disclosure, I do not have shares in any company that produces UVB bulbs :)

@@icxcnika9399 yeah, I think UVB is at least somewhat beneficial to any reptile as long as they'reout and about while its on.
