So, for those of you don't believe this was ever a problem, here's the first results when I google "misinterpreting bookburning mtg": www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-rulings/magic-rulings-archives/254650-book-burning www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/762fji/what_cards_did_you_completely_misunderstand_when/ tappedout.net/mtg-questions/book-burning-what-do-they-mean-by-unless-the-player-has-a-burning-book/ It's actually a mistake that makes a lot of sense, if you interpret the line break as the end of a clause, it's grammatically correct! But, a line break isn't enough to end a clause.
@smob0
@smob0 3 дня назад
I've mentioned this about book burning a few times over the years and no one believes me when I say it confused a lot of kids. Judgement was new when my friends and myself all where brand new, so it came up a bunch. I think people who have been playing a while understand the game too much, and can't put themselves in a new player's shoes easily.
@througtonsheirs_doctorwhol5914
"uNLESS AN OPPONENT HAS BOOK BURNING DEal 6 DAMAGE TO THEM" here is the END OF CONDITION, THEN... "PUT TOP 6 CARDS", EVERYTHING BEFORE THE COMA IS IMPORTANT, ONCE AGAIN, AS THERE IS NO EROR, IT'S JUST A LINE BREAK THAT BREAKS THE MIND OF THE READER

And you have highlighted another misunderstood part, which is common to other cards too: The targeted player doesn't need to take the damage. It can be any player that wants to prevent the milling. Which can be very relevant in multiplayer!

@QuesoCookies I know. I'm saying a lot of newer players misunderstand it by assuming only the targeted player may take the damage. Which is another, separate misunderstanding about the card unrelated to the one the video is about. And that misunderstanding is also common to other similar cards that have a punisher damage effect (some of which only complicate it even more by actually having only the targeted player need to take the damage, like Skullscorch).

Its pretty easy to see how it was misinterpreted, we where 12-13 years old, new to magic, and judgement was one of the first sets to come out after most of us started playing. Being a fairly new player, I speak from experience or rather lack there of 😂 Like I still don't quite understand how the stack works with certain effects and whether or not the proc one at a time or instantaneously. like for example playing a card that mills while mothman is out. He can get a counter each time a nonland card is milled but would the cards be milled 1 at a time applying his trigger to the stack or do they all happen at once and gets a single counter if any card isn't a land lol

Incidentally, the card might actually be usable in Phlage Commander decks. Boros doesn't have a lot of self-mill (Lorehold cards, basically), and this card threatens to let Phlage escape all by itself. So it's a very efficient 6 damage to someone.

The question I have about this card is do you need to declare targets when you cast it or do you declare targets after the first clause. Because it seems like the kind of effect that could be decided upon resolution. I assume you have to pick targets first but if not that would be an incredibly interesting card design
@JervisGermane
@JervisGermane 2 дня назад
A) I don't think that's not how most players misunderstand it. B) Some of the stuff you said is slightly inaccurate, and the parts that were inaccurate contribute to the actual misunderstanding. First, any player can take the 6, you or an opponent, so this is most useful in a deck where you want to be dealing damage to yourself. Second, you can mill any player, so this is second-most-useful in a self-mill deck. And as everyone understood when it was printed, you can get yourself straight to Threshold with this card unless an opponent wants to take 6 to stop you.

Makes you wonder how hard it is for some people to actually, like, read what a card says... 🙄 Granted, it certainly could have been worded better, especially considering it's not from some super early set when card wordings were a bit all over the place and not yet standardized. But still, Judgment's from 2002, wasn't it by then then normal to have card wordings along the lines of "a player (assuming they specifically meant exactly that and not the player targeted by the card) chooses one: take 6 damage or target player puts the top 6 cards of their library to their graveyard"?
