In this episode, The Book of Revelation Explained, Dr. Ian Paul talks about interpreting the Book of Revelation. He calls the book "the most remarkable text you will ever read." We discuss the language that John uses to write the book, whether it was a vision, who John is writing to, numerology, the mark of the beast, the seven seals, and many more things about this misunderstood text.

Thank you for what you do, interviewing different people, covering Come Follow Me,etc. Sometimes some things feel controversial, yet it's ok! So informative. These things are so important to know and understand!

Thank you! I like your comment " Sometimes some things feel controversial, yet it's ok! So informative." Dr. Paul is obviously not of the LDS faith, but he can add so much to our knowledge. As the D&C says, "seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom, seek learning even by study and also by faith;" Also, our 13th Article of Faith- "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things." I'm glad you enjoy the channel! Thank you.

Great insight. Thanks. In many ways it reinforces our need to understand all scripture to understand our modern day scripture. It is interesting that although the new testament is frequently referenced the old testament contains the foundation for our understanding of a lot of doctrine. The language is so rich in its scope. It is a little overwhelming sometimes to read scripture and realize that as Elder Maxwell described we really only enter the foyer of scriptural buildings... (I paraphreased that a little 🙃...

It seems to me that Josesph Smith was immersed in the OT. He did not focus on the classical languages of Greek or Latin, rather Hebrew and Egyptian. Zion is built on the model of the City of Enoch, the greater priesthood is called after Melchizedek, and the New Covenant is the Abrahamic Covenant. It is Elijah, Elias and Moses that show up at Kirtland. Good to hear from you! I hope all is well!

This was great discussion. I have always wondered why there is not much qoeted or read about what Oliver Coudry said. I have felt that "they" swept him under a rug. I also would like more discussion on what would be the agenda in the saints book and student manuals to omit this stuff. Why would they care so much about the south America model?

I absolutely love love this in the very beginning when you talk about cultural. I am a member of the church also I lived in the Middle East or 10 years. I was married to a Muslim I was there during the Iran Iraq War and American hostages I learned so much culturally I'm also bilingual now

I am now teaching my grandson to speak Farsi two of my adult children speak Farsi the food is out of this world I love it. One my children's cousin came to America in 19 78 she didn't know any English and so I grabbed the first thing I could find which was the Book of Mormon now she's a devout Muslim but she goes to church every Sunday of the church I had forgotten all about that I read to her from The Book of Mormon until one day she told me I said oh my goodness I do remember that now I don't know if she'll ever convert a she loves the the religion

@@atiyehatiyeh8322 The Book of Mormon, with its Middle-Easter culture, seems like a natural for a Muslim. Whenever I travel, I make sure to eat at local places. To me, half of experiencing the culture is eating the food.

3 1/2 is half of seven(a whole or a completeness). Jesus came in the Meridian of Time (halfway through the whole). Numbers are fun. Words are fun, too! So fun when they intersect like this! 😃 One of the many reasons I love the scriptures...

The point they made about the period of 42 months or 42 years also has a really cool parallel in the Book of Mormon, as there is a 42 year gap between Nephi leaving Jerusalem in 600 BC and arriving in the land of Nephi in 559 BC.
@elizacragun4697
@elizacragun4697 3 года назад
I wonder if the "plain and precious parts" Nephi refers to has to do with numerological and structural meanings like what what you are discussing with the Book of Revelation. Interesting enough that Nephi and other BoM writers actually are told that only John will be allowed to write this.
@CwicShow
@CwicShow 3 года назад
I think that is a part of it. Cultural differences may come to light within the existing texts. And not just in Revelation. For LDS, we know because of Nephi, that this book is not just written for John's contemporaries but for us in the last days as well.

HUGE DISCOVERY!!! Lehi and his family left Jerusalem in 600 BC, they travel to the promised land, and years later Nephi leaves and settles in the land of Nephi, which has great abundance, and builds a temple in the year 559 BC. A SPAN OF 42 YEARS! The same amount of time that the Israelites wandered in the wilderness on their way to the promise land, just like you and this guy talk about in reference to the book of revelation. And why did the Israelites have to wander? Because they could not keep faith in God to lead them through, compare this with the role of the Liahona in Nephi's story. Likewise, Nephi finally arrives in the land promised to him once they separate from the unfaithful (Laman and Lemuel) and they take the Liahona with them into the land of Nephi. And what marks their arrival in this promised land, this new Jerusalem if you will? The construction of a temple after the manner of the temple of Solomon.

Interesting!
@KnuttyEntertainment
@KnuttyEntertainment 3 года назад
@@CwicShow There's more I've since realized while pondering on it. 1. Moses dies before seeing the promise land, likewise, Lehi dies shortly before Nephi goes to the land of Nephi. 2. The Nephites migrated north, separating the Lehites into a northern and southern kingdom with the Nephites and Lamanites, just like the northern and southern kingdoms of Israel, with the northern kingdoms in both cases holding the birthright of the tribe of Joseph. The Northern Kingdoms are also both scattered eventually. This is at the end of the Book of Mormon with the destruction of the Nephites. 3. He talked a lot about how it relates to the book of Daniel. Well, Nephi and Daniel were contemporaries. They very well could have actually known each other while living in Jerusalem. 4. There is a 2nd exodus allegory in the Book of Mormon which is the book of Mosiah, where Alma the Elder takes the Saints further north. I've seen a FAIRmormon talk about both, each analyzing the literary elements of 1st Nephi/Mosiah, and how they're purposefully structured and written to be Exodus allegories. I'm sure this is even more relevant in the original gold plates where the book of Lehi and Mosiah are right next to each other, because the small plates of Nephi were tacked onto the end after the fact. So why 2 exodus accounts? Well, we know that the Book of Mormon is a pattern for the latter-days. So where do we see two exoduses in the latter-days? Well, we see one exodus over the many waters with Christopher Columbus and the founding fathers, which is paralleled by Lehi and Nephi. (This first migration with the founding fathers and Christopher Columbus is a large part of the vision of the tree of life that Nephi has.) And then we see a second migration with Brigham Young (Alma) leading the saints to Utah, after Abinadi (Joseph Smith) was killed at the hands of the wicked king. (Governor Lilburn Boggs with the mormon extermination order.)
@CwicShow
@CwicShow 3 года назад
@@KnuttyEntertainment I'll have to think about a couple of these. The Northern/Southern Kingdoms I've thought of previously. Some additions to that thought- The river Sidon is in the Northern Kingdom in Canaan. Very close to where Lehi's family wold have been from (Northern portion given to Mannaseh). The Lamanite city of Jerusalem is in the South. There is more that I won't go into here, but the Nephites take on much more of the Northern Kingdom place names while the Lamanites seem more tied to Jerusalem, especially in their theology. In regards to the second Exodus, all of the righteous Book of Mormon "Exoduses" are to the North with the Nephites. "Grandpa" Mosiah leaves the Land of Nephi and Nephi's temple (in the lost 116 pages), and like Lehi's exodus, he finds the Urim and Thummim and the Breastplate of the Jaredites. The prophetic power continues to move to the Northern Kingdom. As you said, Alma the Elder and Ammon (the other one) with Limhi also leave to the north. The Anti-Nephi-Lehies all go to the north. Most all of the dissidents and deniers of Christ go to the south and become Lamanites.

John is looking 2,000 years in the future therefore he dose not have words in his language to describe what he's seeing, because they have yet to be invented. So he say's It's like unto; so he's trying to like it unto something in his day. Can you imagine looking 2000 years into the future? You would see things you had no words to describe accurately. The city of Zion is also a cube, Revelation 21:16 16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

The fact that God used the uneducated farm boy, Joseph Smith, to translate the Book of Mormon instead of an educated person like Ian Paul is further proof that it is the work of God.
