tumblr is so real for being a place of discovery. so many images and quotes that prompted me to find out about and consume those movies, shows, books, etc. 🤎 hmm, I was looking at the books I've read and trying to figure out any to recommend here... and I'm kind of thinking Brideshead Revisited but mostly because of a passage in chapter 1 that is often quoted: "But I was in search of love in those days, and I went full of curiosity and the faint, unrecognized apprehension that here, at least, I should find that low door in the wall, which others, I knew, had found before me, which opened on an enclosed and enchanted garden, which was somewhere, not overlooked by any window, in the heart of that grey city." Usually it's just that beginning part quoted, "I was in search of love in those days," but I got out my book to look it up, so I typed the whole sentence. While I do think there is a Romantic way Charles (the narrator & main character) is going about his desires and interactions with others, it's hard for me to completely think of this as a 'yearning' book. That's partially because of the way I initially read it and because of the other elements + the fuller story of the novel. But it IS one of my favorite books and the 1981 miniseries is one of my favorite things, so I do have to recommend it! I also think Mansfield Park because of the way Fanny is such an outsider. She wants certain things in her life but knows she cannot have them and meanwhile has to watch, being a fly on the wall, as these things happen to/with her cousins. MP is actually my favorite Jane Austen novel (among it, P&P, S&S, and Emma) and one of the reasons for that is this different structure and perspective for Fanny's journey. There are definitely some points that lull within the story but I really appreciate how different it is among the Austen I've read. Though, I do think Eleanor and Marianne are yearners in Sense & Sensibility, and both in different ways. It's interesting, I'm now realizing how yearning is adjacent to other feelings like loneliness, potentially grief, melancholia, nostalgia, devotion, ofc synonymous ones like desire and lust.
