i imagine myself somewhere with a lot of snow and cold, sitting close to the fireplace, having a small chess table near me and trying to solve those puzzles with a cup of hot tea in my hand and a grey fluffy cat sleeping on my feet, hehe, nice review Mr. Daniel

Do join me tonight, 7pm (UK) live on RU-vid. I'll be looking at recent games, puzzles and of course you'll be able to ask questions. Here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_fK6v2_grXc.html

I always liked your book reviews Mr. King. But this is the first book that has really gotten me curious. Thank you for the recommendation!

Well I solved the last one. A knight on f8 and a queen on c5 would be checkmate.

Here you go.The first study : 1. Qg6 , (with double threat 2. Re8+ or 2. Qxh7), Bxg6 2. Nxg6+, Kg8 3. Re8+, Kf7 4. Re7+, Kg8 5. Bc4+ and mate next move. In the second study we use the principle from a Reti study where we combine two plans for our king at the same time. 1. f7+, Kf8 2. Kb3, h5 3. Kc4, h4 4. Kd5, h3 5. Ke6, h2 6. Ng6+ and white wins, as you can see here white was always threatening here to enter the square of the h pawn and didn't give black time ti improve his king and block the white's king. There is another line where black plays 1...Kg7 but it is very similar, just in the end black manages to queen but that queeen is lost in a typical skewer. 2. Kb3, h5 3. Kc4, h4 4. Kd5, h3 5. Ke6, h2 6. Ng6!, h1Q 7. f8Q+, Kxg6 8. Qg8+, Kh5 9. Qh8+ picking up black's queen on the next move. Finally in the last position you put the queen on c5 and knight on f8, more commonly the bishop will perform the function of taking those extra squares (like having a bishop anywhere on the h3-c8 diagonal), but ok here the question was about the knight.

In study one 1.Re8+ is correct. In your line the king goes to f6 after Re7+

Just because English people can't pronounce something, doesn't mean that the pronunciation changes
@nilsp9426

Although sometimes it is good fun to hear english speaking people trying to pronounce "Zwischenzug" or "Zugzwang" in a way they accept for themselves as correct "English" ;)

I think Daniel has a pretty good grasp of the Dutch and German language. Plus it takes some courage to make such an effort. As for the rest of the English speaking world... well yeah what can you expect with phonic sounds like ui and eeuw
@RobBCactive
@RobBCactive 6 лет назад
In my experience, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Chinese, Indian and whatever other language speaking group, end up pronouncing things differently, even though they could pronounce it correctly. It's very hard even when you speak a language well to change your pronunciation to another language version of correct mid-flow and it'll confuse most people. For example, I'll point out to you, there's at least 24 vowel sounds in British English, most foreigners don't even try to do more than 8 .. BTW US English again has almost as many and they're different to the UK ones. This criticism is ridiculous and ignorant.
