Andras has something that most chess coaches don't have in that he's an excellent TEACHER. Quite aside from his credentials as a player, it's super important, probably even more important than being a master level player. The best players don't always make the best coaches - which is a truism echoed in every competitive endeavour I've ever come across. Andras' previous book recommendations have seen me jump about 300 rating points immediately, and I think that it's his background in teaching that makes his resource recommendations so strong.

It was me who recommended Chess Strategy for Club Players. I appreciate you picking it up and reviewing it. Since you liked it you might as well pick up his next book on attacking play: Attacking Chess for Club Players. I'm sure you will enjoy that as well, just as excellent.

Yes I agree, a book I really like. And after watching your video, I decided to again go over the material, remembering the saying that there are three ways of learning: repeat, repeat and repeat. For me, the follow up to deepen my understanding of positional chess was not Hellsten*s book. After having a look at the sample pages I decided to go with "The Complete Manual of Positional Chess" and was quite happy doing so.

I really love this book. To learn positional concepts i started with reassess your chess. But to be honest i find it often oversimplified in regards of tactics. Grootens book is much more realistic in that regard. More work for sure but still a good read.

This has been on my chessable wishlist for some time, glad it has your stamp of approval. Definitely a big shortcoming of mine. I'm going to start with Yasser's Winning Chess Strategies which I hope is a good starting point.

"Win at Chess" by Ron Curry seems to be the pre-Grooten book that beginners can easily digest.

50 thumbs up! Been considering whether to get this book for a while now. Also since we are on the subject of positional play, I would like to give a "weird" suggestion for a book review of my own: "Test Your Positional Play" by Robert Bellin and Pietro Ponzetto - Macmillan Library of Chess, 1985. For some reason, it is not so well-known. Some of the analysis doesn't hold up anymore to modern engines, but the exercises are still great. EDIT: looks like there is also an updated 2013 version.

When I was young there was Ludek Pachman's Modern Chess Strategy or Edward Lasker's Modern Chess Strategy (same names). Both were good for the times and easy for me to read. Theory has changed a bit since the 1950s, though I would still recommend those to anyone. Pachman also had another book (which I had) on tactics (if memory serves). It was good too.
@Grandcapi
@Grandcapi Год назад
Actually, Pachman's book in the English translation is an abridged version of the 3 volumes in German, and yes, he wrote another one about tactics. Here, in Brazil, almost every player studied Pachman's strategy book as a beginner book. But this was at a time when there were no other books to buy...

Did you finish it? How much did you learn? Do you recommend it?
@TheBigGuppy
@TheBigGuppy 2 года назад
I finished it about 40 years ago. It was great at the time. It’s in descriptive notation and not algebraic notation. I’m not sure if it has been reprinted in modern notation or not. I learned a lot. You can probably get the book really cheap. I see some used copies of the abridged version on Amazon for less than $5 US. I’m almost 60 years old and I think the book was written before I was born. There are probably newer books that are better. The book Andras reviewed sounds really good. But if you can get the Pachman book cheap it may be worth your time just for the chapter on Minority Attack.

Coach Andras, you sir are a legend! Love your enthusiasm, clarity and insights. Now for a question: if you wanted to develop from, say, 1800 to 2100. One path might be to study Grooten the Hellsten. How would this compare to studying the green and blue Yusupov books instead?
@ChessCoachAndras
@ChessCoachAndras 2 года назад
I would probably favour the Yusupov ones but both are solid.

Dear Coach, thank you for the great recommendation and review. It is also great to know some sequence of books to study and not getting lost in the choices. Talking about sequence, after your three courses on chessable, which i am doing right now, would you recommend to do Seirawan´s Winning Chess Strategy before going to this one? I am at 1500 Lichess so still a long way to go.

@@ChessCoachAndras Good to know. The chapter about thinking process and kaprov elements were also very vague to me. I expected some kind of summary. Remarkable that Aagard his three questions (aimed for a much higher level) are more helpful than that chapter. But I will give it a second chance!

I just finished playing in my first classical tournament. I feel that the biggest weakness of club players is exactly strategy. I got winning positions in almost every game (played in u2000 section) because my opponents were moving pieces quite aimlessly. However Im a 27 year old dude who isn't that great at tactics and calculation as these kids so I messed up some of the games when positions became chaotic. But I think they have good potential becauset they have the tactical foundation which I dont have. I wish I could switch my skills around because Im a bit worried it will be an uphill battle for me to significantly improve at calculation at my age.
