Discussion Questions from end of BCD:
1. When did you first begin to suspect that something was off in Jack and Grace’s marriage?
2. Jack’s try nature and intentions are revealed early on. Did you find this effective? Did you think it lessened or heightened the suspense?
3. We’ve all wondered what was going on in our friends’ and coworkers’ and neighbors’ lives. Have you ever been in Esther’s position, in which you felt something wasn’t right? Did you find her actions believable? Why or why not?
4. Non of Jack and Grace’s other friends and colleagues seem to think anything is wrong in their marriage, and everyone Grace tries to reach out to readily believes Jack’s explanations. Do you think that is because we are inclined to believe the best in people? Or to believe men over women? Or to believe the least-extreme situation?
5. Our understanding of Jack’s character changes considerably over the course of the book. Were you at all duped by him, in the beginning? Or did he seem too good to be true?
6. Do you think it’s possible to hide your real self so well from everyone around you?
7. How did Jack’s backstory affect your feelings about his character, if at all?
8. Did you ever think that Grace might be an unreliable narrator, or that she might be making everything up? If so, at what point?
9. What do you think of Millie’s role in the story? Did you find her character effective?
10. Did you find the ending satisfying? Did you find it just? Even

Option 1:
Lilac Girls go.magik.ly/ml/6l5p/
By: Martha Hall Kelly
Description: New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939-and then sets its sights on France.
An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences.
For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power.
The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents-from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland-as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.
Option 2:
A Gentleman in Moscow go.magik.ly/ml/6l5o/
By: Amor Towles
Description: With his breakout debut novel, Rules of Civility , Amor Towles established himself as a master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction, bringing late 1930s Manhattan to life with splendid atmosphere and a flawless command of style.
A Gentleman in Moscow immerses us in another elegantly drawn era with the story of Count Alexander Rostov. When, in 1922, he is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery.
Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

The ending of this book broke my heart . Yes she’s finally free of jack but she can never share what she went through with people . That’s such a lonely horrible thought that she will have to keep it inside forever

I was bummed about that, too, until Esther asked what color the room was. In my mind, she's going to share things with Esther.

Yes, she will have to deal with it for a long time and even towards the end you get a glimpse of what could possibly be PTSD as she's always feeling anxious that Jack will still be one step ahead of her. However, she still has Esther and Millie if ever she needs to confide in someone and help get things out in order to heal.

Such a weird book. Jack felt like a cartoon villain with no complexity to his personality and his origin story was just laughable. Grace's ridiculous attempts to escape got so repetitive and Jack being able to excuse all of Grace's behavior with "she's mentally ill" was so infuriating and unrealistic. And what's with Jack threatening Grace by telling her he'd send Millie to an asylum? Since when did asylums take people with Downs? Just ridiculous

What. A. Psycho. I was so bummed/shocked that the other "couple" next door in Thailand was actually Jack that entire time she was working up the courage to ask them for help. Totally messed with my head.

I wanted to kick Jack in the nuts through the book so many times!!! I'll admit, the neighbors in Thailand actually being Jack did surprise/disturb/creep me the eff out!! Like, who even has the energy to be that shitty? 👿

Yeah it defitinely wasn't a suspenseful read, but still kept me entertained. Finding out why Melli would say things about George Clooney, Esters curiosity and the room color, those things were good parts. But the ending was GREAT! SO GOOD!

I felt something off from the beginning bc it reminded me of Jake in The Silent Child with all the perfectionism etc with the house and the way she dressed and stuff. I agree that the hints were too strong like thailand should've been a bombshell for example bc you should've been like blindsided by his change in character. I loved the ending though I was so shook by Esther.
@JadeTheLibra
@JadeTheLibra 7 лет назад
YASS!! I totally agree with you about those Jake vibes! If there wouldn't have been so many damn hints the book would have been on Silent Child levels of creepiness/amazingness too... Such a bum out, but the ending definitely saved the day!! Loved Esther's character! Although, I still wonder if she really did line the words in the book she let Grace borrow. I know Jack took credit for it, but I'm not so sure after the ending. What do you think?
@Stormer9816
@Stormer9816 7 лет назад
Jade The Libra The book thing really puzzled me! I feel like she could well have done it, although you could say that jack would've noticed and been more suspicious of her. But actually he was so smooth about everything that he probably wouldn't be too worried/would want to pretend he wasn't worried about it to grace. Plus I feel like the confusion about the red room was probably the main clue that something was wrong, but then the rest of grace's 'life' appeared so perfect that she must've spotted something else to find what could've just been a mistake on jack's part suspicious. But then idk I'm like aaaa why isn't there an answer Esther how did you know 😂😅

@@Stormer9816 well I feel like Eetha knew for a while. Esther quizzed grace at the dinner about what she does all day long, and having given up her career that she loved and had traveled extensively in, to become an isolated hermit that" cooks and cleans and does gardening _-when weather permits" just because she got married? She had all these friends but now sees no-one? This is very suspicious. Then Esther finds out she doesn't have a mobile phone and presses the issue of how odd that is , and that's very curious in this day and age. Especially for a woman like Grace. Then she tries to exchange home numbers with grace but Jake gets in the way and does it for her, grace doesn't even have a pen or anything for that matter in her wallet. Then when trying to exchange emails Esther finds out they have a shared one, Esther sees grace has absolutely no privacy and no part of her life Jake doesn't control. When Esther discusses books with her and offers to lend her one Jake refuses saying he will buy one and insists she doesn't visit the house to drop it to grace. One day when she does drop it off, clearly she isn't able to see Grace in person. Then at the end ,yes , the discussion about the red room comes to light and that's the final confirmation. To be fair the hints were strong that something fucked up was going on.

Literally during the first dinner party, she says she hopes Jack will plant this flower somewhere she can see it. Then that got driven home when Jack tells the guests Grace has "green fingers" (btw why didn't he say 'green thumb' like a normal person? I dont think it meant anything, it just confused me.) I liked how they showed that Esther knew, and was backing her up, without even saying it. I'm also glad that Jack suffered exactly what Molly suffered instead of just passing out and not waking up.

The ending made the book. The only time I questioned Grace was when suddenly she was narrating fromThe car with Esther with jack not with her. I️ thought perhaps she’s made the whole thing up and is a psycho killer. But quickly realized that couldn’t be. I️ was confused on the last chase around the house and if jack actually finished his drink before she sprayed him in the eyes. I️ thought I️t was clever grace held I️t together long enough to get to Thailand. I️t killed me when Millie gave her the pills and grace didn’t reward her. Also I️ loves the ending but I️t would’ve been nice to indulge in hearing how Millie and grace lived on after. Or atleast see how their private discussion went after jacks death. I️ totally agree that I️t was disturbing at times and I️ had to remind myself I️t was just a book and put I️t down. Especially when Molly was dead.

I just finished this book today.I guess I am watching this video to confirm my feelings towards the book and that you did, so thank you.I 100% agree with all your thoughts on the book. It was good and had a great ending but no shock value at all.The whole time she was in Thailand alone, you know he’s dead already.Why?It was good but Idk if it lives up to the hype as a thriller book....you’ve probably read like 2000 books since this one but good video.

In some countries (e.g. Thailand) you can pay for people or even kids to be tortured, raped or killed. So I'm pretty sure he just paid to watch and listen to the fear of these victims.

I completely agree with you in that this was an enjoyable book, but it could have given more in terms of twists and suspense. I actually hooked my mum up with this one for going on holiday and she loved it because it was dark and twisted, but still pulpy enough to be a good casual read. ***SPOILERS*** How is no one mentioning Molly??? 2 books in book club with needless dog deaths!! I caaaan't. :(

I still don't understand why people kill pets in thrillers or horror.... I'm not gunna lie, I totally ranted about this for literally 15 minutes but ended up edited out, because it was a complete repeat rant from last month. The only thing that made it somewhat bearable in comparison to last months book was the fact that Jack died in the same exact way Molly did! Karma is the real MVP of the book! Jack, bye!

It was a good enough read to finish the book. I agree, it felt like we were in the book. And I loved the ending but it was so short and abrupt. I needed an epilogue. Why did Esther know something was off? What fell flat for me was Jack’s character. He didn’t make sense. His motivation is sadism, but non-sexual. He’d concocted this massive story about her being mental but also they were perfect? Why did he tell her his plan before he had Millie? Why did he torture her and then flaunt her around? What was the point of having her locked up all the time? I don’t know a ton about sadists but the psychology didn’t work for me. The only humanizing moment was when he comforted her after her ‘miscarriage’.

I knew something was off immediately based on the way Grace talked about how everything HAD to be perfect. The author really didn't do that good of a job in making it seem like everything was actually perfect before they revealed what was really going on. Honestly they telegraphed almost every punch they threw... Every time something surprising was going to happen, they told you about it! It was still a really good book, but I feel like the execution could have been better to make it truly suspenseful. As it is actually written, I didn't find myself feeling any real suspense at all. As for their illusion of perfection and Jack's explanations of Grace's behavior, I don't believe that no one would have suspected anything at all. Her dodging social engagements and visits with her sister and Jack always answering for her/escorting her everywhere would set off some major bells in my head. But then again, I've also been in a relationship where my SO was extremely controlling (obviously not to the extent that Jack is, but I know what red flags to look for from that) I kind of feel like Millie was written sloppily and it bothers me a little that her mental disability was just a plot device. She needed Millie in order to finally kill Jack, but otherwise she had no real purpose in the story at all. The author could have used a sister who was just off at boarding school or something. Idk it just felt off to me. I did like at the end, though, where Grace asked Esther why she would help her in covering up that she murdered Jack and Esther replied, "What color was Millie's room, Grace?" And Grace just said "Red." I was so glad she connected the dots between Jack's little "slip up" in the color of her room and the terrifying red room in which he was found dead.

I love that you mentioned your excitement when Esther made the connection with the red room and the room Jack died in cuz I was gagging when I read the ending! I hate to admit, but I was also stoked to see some serious karma working since he suffered in the same way he made the dog suffer. There's a special place in hell for people like Jack 👹

It is worth reading, I agree. And I was very happy with the ending! Go Esther!! I loved Millie. I kept trying to think of ways she could off her husband, but he was so controlling and so ahead I didn't know how she would pull it off. It was disturbing, but I feel like it could have been even creepier! I love the creepy, bring it on.
@JadeTheLibra
@JadeTheLibra 7 лет назад
I was also wondering how she was ultimately going to kill her husband --- I just wish it wouldn't have been revealed that he was already dead before it even happened! Such a bummer, because I wasn't convinced she could pull it off either. I think it would have been more effective if the book just went straight into her attempt... I feel like the suspense would be killing me wondering whether or not her attempt would lead to his dead or potentially hers, but it's like a spoiler was dropped right when things were getting good!! AHH WHYYYY?!?!
