oh you absolutely HAVE to read “last night at the telegraph club”!! it easily became one of my favorite reads of last year from the fast-paced ness of everything, the imagery and descriptions of food and the culture and life of san francisco in the 1950’s being a constant backdrop throughout the entire thing. and the love story is so, so well written and lovely to read! do yourself a favor and read it!!!!
Ahh I totally agree! I recently read last night at the telegraph club and I was an instant favorite for me, I can’t stop thinking about this book it brought me to tears haha
malinda lo's companion novel for it - 'a scatter of light' - came out last year and it is equally as good! it has nods towards lily and kath's relationship and it's such a good followup, even though the two narratives are a bit different from each other. :')
Hey Jack, this is unrelated to the video but just in case you'll see this, I just wanted to say thank you for getting me back into reading. Back in 2020, you started posting pop culture-related book content and as someone who has never been on booktube before, these videos of you "reading tiktok's viral booktok books" or "This celebrity's book recs" have brought me into the fun world of the online book community that I honestly don't know how I'd stumbled across otherwise. I've read a few books here and there after that, but It took me 3 years to really get into reading afterward and now I really, really enjoy doing it. Of course, how much I read always fluctuates, but I definitely read a lot more than I have before ( thanks to Booktube). Your book recs not only inspire/influence me to read more, but also dozens of other people, and I think that's such an accomplishment and is really what an influencer should do, in my opinion at least. Not trick you into buying expensive products( that you don't even need) but inspire you to do/buy something that will add value without the need for personal gain, it's not like the authors sponsored you for giving their book a positive review, you just genuinely liked it. And also, you're just really funny and entertaining, and every time I feel bad or off, I put on your videos and it makes me feel better. Idk, your channel ( and this one) have grown into a comfort channel for me, so thank you 💞
the moment you picked up "the unbearable lightness of being" i audibly said yesss. absolutely in my top five faves of all time. kundera's writing is so beautiful and special...
I'm surprised by how empty the bookshelves seem to be, you'd think they'd be fuller for an event of that magnitude. It actually reminds me of the Annual Book Fair in Lisbon, Portugal, which a lovely book fair in this gorgeous garden with a great view, free entry for everybody, that has over 300 stands - all stocked full of books. I think last year something like 700 thousand people went there. It's great.
I can vouch there’s a HUGE warehouse behind the scenes and people were buying about 12-15 books at once sometimes and sometimes people buy two or three copies or get one that is signed/one that is not signed/one for someone else like a family member or friend!
I saw the Alice Oseman posted a picture of the two of you on Twitter earlier, which must have been exciting for you. I’m sure it was an absolute joy for you to interview her.
I’m reading “A Little Life” right now because I heard you talk about it in an earlier video… it’s fantastic but is EASILY the darkest book i’ve ever read and i’m only halfway through. you’ve all been warned but it’s so worth the read!!
Very much wanted to watch this but there's too much fast, swinging camera movement for the olds and it will give me motion sickness, ugh. I'd love to know what's on that "Eurovision Book Contest" shelf and why!
