tammy cantor yaaasss that was the one where i thought of two I JUST WENT INTO BARNES AND NOBLES AND SAID WHY DONT THESE BOOKS HAVE NUMBERS ON THEM? Lol
Chelsea Kerns I usually buy my books from ThriftBooks.com and you can get them anywhere from $3 to original price and if you spend $10 or more you get free shipping.
Or the tv show cover. I bought city of bones and it has jace and clary from the tv show on the cover. And yea grace me with their hotness but still I want the original shit
Lindsey fromBFCG I never see the pronunciation guides at the end until after I've finished the book. There's one in Crooked Kingdom as well. Why don't publishers put them at the front of the book? I'm always scared I'm going to accidentally spoil myself by flipping to the end of a book.
teresafoo because for some it can cause spoilers as who would be important and who isn't, because you only need name pronouncements for the people who don't die.. So I guess some will see it as spoilers
Fun Fact: J.K. Rowling had Hermione explain how to pronounce her name to Viktor Krum in Goblet of Fire because J.K. Rowling didn't like that everyone was pronouncing Hermione's name wrong
Ghostly Demigod they had that in the shadow bone series but they still didn't have like pronunciation guide in the back so they had the italicized words in there but you had no idea what they meant coz there was no guide or at least not in my book
There is a map in all of the *Throne of Glass* and *A Court of Thorns and Roses* books. In *We Were Liars* too and it's not even a sci-fi or fantasy book.
the series numbering drives me bonkers. it is not that hard to actually put a number on there ive been spoiled many times while reading backs of books to see what they are about
If i find a new bookseries i don't know about, and that doesn't have a number, i always stand akwardly in the bookstore while checking goodreads to make sure that i buy the right book XD
The first thing. YES. I don't wanna google the series order every freaking time. Also I'd love if book with too many characters (like A Song Of Fire And Ice) would like have a character guide or something. Cause it's way too confusing for me.
All of the A Song Of Ice And Fire books do have character guides at the back, breaking it down into the different houses and who is related to who, even saying who is alive and dead at that point
I don't know, maybe it's a different version, all the ones I've seen do have the characters at the back, but maybe other editions don't. I just had a look at my editions, and just to give you an idea about how many characters are in it, the first book (Game of Thrones) has 19 pages of characters, the most recently released (A Dance With Dragons) has 61 pages! Have you tried just skimming the last few pages of the book? Because it isn't right at the back, there are acknowledgements and stuff after it
😂😂😂 - I agree with the numbering on the spines. On one or two occasions I've read ahead when I'm not supposed to. ("Just gimme a little ring-ding-ding!") 😂😂😂
Chloe Matthews my public library put Ignite Me before Unravel Me (from the Shatter Me series) and it didn't say anything about it being the third book until I flipped to the back to see the blurbs and I realized I had just read the entire "last book"
Michal Kate Castleman bad luck! that completely sucks! i did a very silimer thing with that series and i brought the last one but thankfully i didn't read it, i now need to buy the first 2
The moments when the books in a series aren't numbered so you have to read the blurbs to figure out which one you are meant to read next but then you read a blurb and the first line is like: 'After Bob died and they defeated the Dragon...' NOOO DON'T DO THIS TO MEEEE!!
Depends how big the world building is imo. I don't even have to bother remembering the disc world by terry Pratchett because he always uses the same places and doesn't get me confused at all, after all, every city has its uniqueness and they are hard to forget
I just went to the bookstore. I thought I was going in,get a book, and pay for it. Nope I was in the book store for 45 minutes looking for the perfect book 😂
Faith Anderson At least you came out with a book! I'm currently in spain, and I drove 40 minutes to visit an English bookstore and I left the store empty handed! The frustration is real!
YES TO THE PHYSICAL AND EBOOK THING!! There are times when I can't carry a book around or times when i forget my book and would love to have a digital copy with me. I'd love to be able to own both without having to pay full price for both
Numbers on books are so handy for series books - so many series I've read out of order accidentally! Totally agree with the ebook being available for free when buying physical books (lots of films do this so why can't books)
Giving an ebook with the physical copy shouldn't be that big of a deal. I mean, if you buy a blue ray, most of the time you get three copies of the movie(blue ray, regular DVD, and a digital download). Books should do that too! I'd get so much more reading done that way!
As a part time librarian, I sometimes have to dig to find the series number because I understand how stressful it is when books aren't in the correct order.
For the pronunciation guide. There is one series that actually has one of those. It is called the keepers, and it is so helpful because there are so many crazy made up names in that series.
Got a new Urban fantasy book yesterday and in the Bock is Vocabulary, the learn the the fantasy language! This is so cool! Or maps! I love maps in fantasy books!
I 100% agree with you on the physical book/ebook thing! When you buy recently made records nowadays you usually get a coupon code that lets you download the soundtrack for free on a certain website! I feel like that's how books should be from now on tbh. You get a little card that comes with, so they could maybe put it in the book jacket, or have a little packet that comes with that the seller gives you after purchase!
4:40 A book series called Wings of Fire actually has a guide in the beginning to each book about the different dragon tribes, what they look like, and their abilities. As well as students/rulers/allies, along with an actual picture as a reference. Which is really nice
I also want numbers for the orders on the spines! I've bought book 2 before because I didn't look up the order of the book and that is just so annoying to have to look it up when your in the bookstore to see if it's the first one.
A number on the spine would be the most useful thing in the world. I can't even tell you how many times I've accidentally read the second book in the series first so many times
The Mistborn books are super long so have summaries for the prev book in them, they also have a chart explaining the magic system, maps, and an entire index explaining terminology, nicknames, etc. I love it and I agree that the small things in books rly make a difference !
When I read Harry Potter and everyone was complaining that I was reading too much I tried to trick them by putting a bookmark at specific page and then read but not changing the bookmark's position so I had to remember the page and through this I somehow learned to always remember the page. It has never ever happened that I forgot to remember the page and for the record I'm not reading a little amount of books!
Man, I love Rick Riordan because he had maps in the Percy Jackson series, he numbers his books on the spine, and he has the Pronunciation guides at the end, along with a mini dictionary for gods you may not know the name of. You don't know how much that makes me love him.
That thing you were describing about ebooks actually happens with comics. So many people prefer reading them digitally with the guided view function and so marvel and dc usually offer a digital download if you buy the issue in print.
About the built in bookmarks, this is not the same, but it might help a bit? There are some bookmarks called "Bookjig" (they're sold in Amazon) they have a little clamp to attach on to the cover of the book, and a ribbon to use as a bookmark. You just keep them on the book as you read and just unclamp and reuse after you're done. The only gripe is that you have to be careful when putting the clamp on a paper back, since it can tear it.
Yes to book number of the series on the spines, or the cover, or in the front contents. I have accidently jumps into a series by picking up the second or fourth book, not knowing it wasn't the first. I actually put book numbers on my books with little stickers, so I can find/read my books in order. Something I want to see is a list of characters at the front of the book. Which I have seen some authors do, which is great, especially with a series. It gives a little summary of the character, so that the author doesn't waste a bunch of story time informing any new readers/readers in need of a refresher, who so and so are. And it doesn't give anything away plot wise, just a little bio. One of my biggest pet peeves reading series. Is authors who waste paragraph after paragraph going on about a character's backstory. Especially when you can tell who the writers favorite is and they ignore telling anything about another character, while they waste five paragraphs talking about a character that could have been told in five lines.
Just came from one of your old videos haha. Great video Jesse. Edit: we have the same feels for everything you listed. I *absolutely* love full cast audiobooks.
I totally agree on the numbers for series and the pronunciation guides! I can't count the times I picked up a book assuming it was a stand alone, just to find out that it's part of a series!
Yes! I agree with all of these, but especially on the book download if you own the physical book. I love to switch out between physical and ebook. Ebooks are just easier to read while my husband is asleep.
In the book Carve The Mark Veronica Roth put alot of weird words and phrases for things and in the back of the book she put a glossary so we could know what they were ,which I love. She could've put how to pronounce the word but the glossary is a really good start.
Whilst I do like full cast recording, the fact that they don’t usually do this makes it all the better. That being said, I’m quite happy to listen to radio dramas that don’t have their origins in books.
One of the only things I like about hardcovers is dust jackets (when they have them). Then I can use the flap of the dust jacket to tuck in as a bookmark.
Totally understandable! Actually, the new from Veronica Roth (Carve the Mark) has a glossary, which is quite not what you're asking for because your asking for a pronunciation guide but having a glossary is also kinda cool and helpful
OMG YESSS for numbers (at least on the first page). And also a page of summary of what happened in the previous books in the series/trilogy! I always forget what's happened until the next book comes out 😣
In sequels it would be amazing to have just a brief little summary of what went down in the last book, and a list of who the characters are (especially in fantasy). I was so thankful when I opened Traitor to the Throne almost a year after reading Rebel of the Sands and it had a little sentence about each character.
i know i’m really late..but i agree with all of them! especially number 1. i’m my library, the librarian was awesome and stuck the number on the spines for us! She is the best!
Jesse thank you for this. I agree completely. Why can't they put the number on the spine or one the cover or something! Also having a breakdown of the magical or dystopian world that is in that particular book or series would be amazing! When you read so many books and series you start to see similarities in the worlds and sometimes you can start to confuse one from the other, so having a breakdown of the laws and the powers and the do's and don't's would be helpful and soooo cool! I am an aspiring author and I will try to make sure my books or series reflect some of your wants because I agree and think it takes the whole realm up a notch. So thank you.
I’d love a guide at the back of every fantasy book. Some books do have guides for certain things - Tolkien, Brandon Sanderson to name a couple but it would be helpful if all sci-fi/fantasy books had a guide at the back.
I work in a library.. Numbers on the spine would be amazing! I try, but I cannot remember the order of every juvenile and teen series. Additionally, if you aren't going to put the number on the spine, at the VERY least, list the series in the book. Most places have a public restroom, TP is a great book mark.. :)
I agree with everything you said! Cassandra Clare books, at least in my country, have numbers on them and it's so useful. I hate having to go on google and search "In what order should I read this books?" It happens A LOT.
Couldnt agree more with everything on this list! Especially with the first one! I find it so confusing when i dont know much about a series and the order to read them. And the prounouciation guide! I thought Parabati was like Para-bar-tee but then i watched the series and its so different. I realise that could just be their interpretation but id like an official prounouciation
I can totally relate with this! I'm working for a publisher so I know things like build in bookmarks and the creation of an ebook are very expensive - still would like that...
