I have several disabilities, one of which is narcolepsy. This often leads to random lines running across my drawing, because I fell asleep in middle of drawing a line. I have learned to accept these unintended lines as a new direction for the piece. Regardless of what methods you use for instruction, learning to work with the everyday hiccups in your process will help you overcome obstacles and succeed.

Thanks for sharing that and you are totally right. Really important to remember! Glad you don't let your situation discourage you from doing what you want. That's awesome :)

Put another piece of paper or napkin or something under your hand. I usually hold my pencil farther back from the point and it keeps my hand away from the rest of the drawing. There's a few different things you could do but just have to find the one that feels most comfortable for you.

I'm totally like what you say. I learn more by trying to draw from what I see, a picture, a drawing etc. I also like to see a lot of videos and thats how I learn. I try to draw everything. Faces are kinda easy but I really want to learn how to draw a real portrait of a person.

Something I learned from a book was to trace and work from the photo. This was in a book about drawing people. It will teach you to pay attention to what you are really seeing. Still life was encouraged too. You always have interesting videos.

Very good video! I’ll be trying this right away. It’s kinda hard to tell, how much time did it take you to finish this drawing? It will take me longer but I’m getting faster (I know it’s not a race but I’m getting more efficient than when I started). Thank you

@ANYONE I’m new to drawing with no experience. I’m having a hard time figuring out how and what to draw. Should I just copy draw a picture? Will this achieve me being able to draw and then being able to create my own designs?

I have been trying to learn to draw for 2 years not going to lie it has been slow and now i have some health issues but i remaber one of my biggest issues is i can't move shapes around in my head and when i do it is often off and looks wrong. I feel like it's kind of a perspective issue but one that i can't seem to fix.
@SchaeferArt
@SchaeferArt 2 года назад
Sorry to hear about your health issues and struggles learning to draw too. What do you mean by moving shapes around in your head? WHat kinds of things are you attempting to draw and what are you moving around? Are you using reference photos for anything you are drawing?
@ryanclemons1

@@SchaeferArt It's more just spatial awareness issues things like placing a form in the wrong area of other forms making something look off or deformed. trying to mold forms into the forms i want but making smaller mistakes or just good old forgetting how to do something. As for drawing 3D forms wrong I have some aphantasia not full blown aphantasia but to the point what i see in my mind has issues vs other people. 1.Can't picture my whole drawing in my head just parts it's a little better with reference but even then I can only think of one form at a time From what i understand most people can see how all the forms work together issue is I can only see one form at a time when i draw. 2.The 3D form i make are often somewhat off reference truth be told I have started to try and lean into this vs trying to fix it issue is I get the feeling most people have the other issue they can copy a reference but making changes feels harder i'm the other way around it's when I need something to look one way or am trying to copy something 100% i screw it up. 3.I have mostly have given up on drawing my own 100% no reference photos drawing. I have learned I do best with a "Base" to work on vs nothing to work with. Anyway you asked if I use Reference photos that would be a yes but with a asterisk I use only one at a time I know some people use like 5 or 7 Reference photos But i have issues keeping track of 1 reference more then that confuses me. plus i would like to understand how to use 1 reference really well before i move on to lots of them. Also not 100% sure how to use more then 1 reference. Sorry that was kind of long truth be told i was feeling good yesterday so i did draw something A character from this kids book my nephew I watch help with family anyway It came out as one of my better drawings and I posted it online and plan on placing it in my online journal I made but sadly forget to use way to much :)

@@ryanclemons1 @SAU Ah I see. That is quite interesting. I don't think you are alone in this problem. I would say close to 100% of us when starting out have troubles with deviating from a reference or using multiple references. Took me years to get to the point where I could even just leave something out of the background of a landscape reference for painting. Or to move something simple around like a telephone pole, etc.. I think it just takes a lot of practice and repetition. I still to this day use mainly 1 reference photo for drawings. I think to use more than one or to be able to deviate from it, you have to have some kind of greater understanding of your subject and have probably drawn that subject many many times, etc. So don't be too hard on yourself, just take your time and do your best. It's something so many people struggle with. Most beginners don't even think to use a reference and then they wonder why they can't draw anything. You gotta have an understanding of reality and knowledge of a subject to draw it from scratch. It takes so much practice to do something like that. Anyways, thanks for the response. I say just keep on keeping on and focus on one reference. You will most likely improve. If you ever want to make changes to a references, I would start out with the simplest and most minor changes. Then as time progresses, maybe redraw the same thing but change something else a bit more, etc.. slowly get used to changing or combining elements from another reference. Hope that helps.
