Here are the books I want to read this December, and the books I recommend for you to read this December!
Hi friends,
Happy December!
I'm so excited for the holiday reading season, so I had an absolute blast filming this video! I hope you're able to find some holiday reads that peak your interest, or maybe you'll see one of your own favorites :)
Carolyn's questions of the day:
Bookish - Which author would you invite to Christmas dinner?
Non-Bookish - What is one of your favorite Christmas traditions?
:)
My answers:
Bookish - After much deliberation, I've settled on inviting Charles Dickens to Christmas dinner, so I can have a front row seat to A Christmas Carol recitation...maybe Leo Tolstoy can be there dressed as Santa, for obvious reasons the white beard
Non-Bookish - Winding up all of the snow globe music boxes at the same time with my sister! (It sounds horrible, but it's quite a bit of fun)

Having lost my mother a week back, I've been feeling detached from reading even more than I'd felt over the last several months. I was really waiting for a December recommendations video from you and here you are. Take my love. ❤️

Really sorry for your loss. It's so hard losing someone around the holiday season, I went through that as well. Years ago when I was going through one of my family losses, I got some comfort from Christina Rossetti's poem "Remember". Not sure if that will help or make you more sad but just thought I would mention it. Praying joy and comfort will return for you and your family.

I'd love to invite Tolkien for dinner or tea! I think we'd have a great time discussing Christmas and just stuff in general And my absolute favorite Christmas tradition is all about food lol. My family has a lot of special foods that we make during Christmas time, like cringle and fondue and fudge! A lot of our other Christmas traditions fell to the wayside after my sister and I grew up (like getting new Christmas pajamas as presents and we'd open those on Christmas Eve so we could wear them to bed)

I think you should wait until after the holidays to read Norwegian Wood. That book is good, but it is devastating and frustrating. Lol. You won’t feel joyful reading this, and it’s not even the kind of sadness like Never Let Me Go. It’s just… bummer sadness that doesn’t make you feel fulfilled. I’m probably not making any sense, but I would recommend you not ruin your Christmas joyful season. 😅

Thanks for the December rec's Carolyn. I ordered 5 of these from Amazon just now! I'd love to hear the snow globe cacophony on a video from you! I'd invite Jan Karon to dinner. She's 85 and a well published Christian book author; best known for her "Mitford Series" novels with Father Cavanaugh. I have all of these books and just love how wholesome they are and how well developed each character is. A tradition for us is taking my adult son out to dinner on Dec. 24th, which is his actual birthday! We eat Japanese around a big grill and enjoy the food cooked in front of us!!!! Sending hugs from cold Chicago!

Bookish Answer: I would invite Jane Austen to Christmas Dinner. I think she would be a really intriguing guest to host. Also she is my favorite author! Non-Bookish Answer: My wife I began creating our own traditions by celebrating the Winter holidays, taking inspiration from both our childhoods as well as connections to our ancestries. My wife is part Jewish, and so we like to celebrate Hanukkah in recognition of her heritage. We both have Irish ancestry, and therefore we like to celebrate the Winter Solstice as well.

Please, please, please add Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory" to your late Dec, pre-Christmas TBR. It takes about an hour to read and definitely will put you in the Christmas mood. Favorite author at Christmas dinner absolutely would be Charles Dickens because he LOVED big dinners, long walks and was a born entertainer and story-teller. He'd be the perfect guest. Favorite tradition: unwrapping and displaying my santons from Provence. Enjoy the month. PS Please read [little tree] by ee cummings too.

I recommend to you the book of short stories 'Home for Christmas: stories for young and old' by Miriam LeBlanc et. al., further readings: 'Nutcracker and Mouse-King' by E.T.A. Hoffmann, 'Christmas Days' by Jeanette Winterson, 'Christmas Island' by Natalie Normann, 'A Redbird Christmas' by Fannie Flagg, 'Christmas Bells' by Jennifer Chiaverini, can't recommend enough 'Little Women' by Louisa M Alcott, 'The Autobiography of Santa Claus' by Jeff Guinn (as recommended by Penguin Random House publ.) I hope some of the books listed will add to your Christmas book bibliography.

My Christmas blues don't last too long😂 because in Winter I always have another holiday to look forward to besides Christmas🎄 and that's Chinese New Year!🧧 Anyway here are my answers to your questions - *The Bookish Question :* I think I'd invite L.M. Montgomery. I absolutely adore her nature description as it's always so vivid and full of beauty, imagination & innocence! *The Non-Bookish Question :* I'd say listening to Christmas jazz cafe BGM🎷 while getting huddled up in blankets🧣, sipping on a mug of hot chocolate☕ and reading a book!📖

Norwegian Wood definitely has a melancholy mood, so I’d recommend waiting until January. answer to the bookish question: I’d invite Jane Austen to Christmas dinner because she’s hilarious! And my favorite Christmas tradition was started only a few years ago, I invited my Grandparents over for breakfast on Christmas morning. We lost my Grandpa in Jan of 2021, so it’s been nice to still include my Grandma in the Christmas morning magic ❤

To answer the second question about traditions. When we were all at home and much younger we would decorate the tree with mum and dad and on Christmas Day we would all come together over hot Christmas dinner, with bon bons, Christmas hats and the whole day was spent imbibing in food, lollies, drink and more food, then in the afternoon we would all sleep it all off! Today it's a bit lost because we're all in our 50s-60's now and live distance from each other, we don't always see each other on Christmas. Each year I try to see everyone over the Christmas holiday/new year period, which I usually do. I spend Christmas Day with my mum, my brother and his partner mostly and we have a lovely hot dinner, open presents and then have a very quiet afternoon/evening recovering. The day after Christmas our tradition is to watch the Boxing Day Test Match (Cricket), which is between the big cricket nations. This year Australia will be playing South African cricket team. In Australia summer is Cricket, and it's a very big thing over here. Especially the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, held every year the day after Christmas. After which in January is the Australian Open Tennis Championship, so Christmas is actually a big sporting time for Australians. This period every year is Cricket, Golf championships and Tennis championships. We have different traditions at this time of year because in Australia it's Summer whereas over in your part of the world it's Winter.

tbh there weren't very many happy days for me as a kid at Christmas. Nevertheless, it was Christmas so now they seem happy nonetheless. Generally, I avoid politics but the one topic wherein I can't hold back is when they try to take away one of the few genuinely happy times and replace it with the same miserable drudgery we have all the year. Well, clearly they're smarter than I am because I still believe in some illogical things. So, on that cheery note: I wish you a very merry X-mas, a happy new year, and more to come.

His Dark Materials is amazing!! I think the second and third books are even better than the first; some of the most creative fantasy writing I’ve ever encountered, especially for YA. I will say the rest of the series is definitely not as “wintery” as the first volume so it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get to them this month :)
@hectorrobertocontrerasmiranda
The Subtle Knife is definitely a summer book, and The Amber Spyglass is more Spring, which is very weird considering the whole series happens across a few weeks
@Zoe-pu3pi
@Zoe-pu3pi Год назад
@@hectorrobertocontrerasmiranda fr! I thought it was at almost a year though, especially The Golden Compass which I think spanned at least a few months depending on how long Lyra spent living with Coulter.
@hectorrobertocontrerasmiranda
@@Zoe-pu3pi the following is just general info on the series for anyone else who might end up reading this and wants to know a little more. Feel free to ignore. Yes, I just looked it up taking advantage of the fact that I had my copy right next to me because I'm just finishing my first reread of the series in preparation for the start of the new season of the show (incidentally I started this reread back in November 2020 and then proceeded to ignore the last novel throughout 2021 before picking it out in January 2022 and then ignoring it again for almost 11 months). On chapter 5 of Northern Lights/The Golden Compass* it says it only been "six weeks or so" and that "autumn began to change into winter" at the beginning of the previous paragraph. And then there are literally "a few days" between each subsequent book** *pg. 76 of the Everyman's Edition on this video. My copy is the American edition, Carolyn's the British (the spines of the dust jacket are different but this American edition is NOT censored like the previous american editions of The Amber Spyglass. And I know I have the American edition because the first book is clearly mentioned as "The Golden Compass" EVERYWHERE except the chronology where it's only clarified that it was originally published under a different name. It's a whole thing) **pg. 372, second half of chapter 1 of The Subtle Knife, and pg. 646, 8th paragraph of chapter 1 of The Amber Spyglass

I think I would invite maybe Neil Gaiman to Christmas dinner, he's such a cool guy and amazing storyteller, so I think it would be a great night! My favourite Christmas tradition is getting the presents from where they have been "hidden" in drawers and cupboards with my sister and putting them under the tree, while watching Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella (an old 70s film from the Czech Republic dubbed into Norwegian, a classic) ✨

I have read Silver Skates, many years ago because my mother had the book when she was a young girl and had it in her collection, unfortunately I can't really remember the story now but the edition you have looks lovely. Which writer would I invite to my home? Well at Christmas, you know the first person that came to my mind was Jane Austen, wow, what do you know? I thought it would be Hans Christian Anderson but Jane just popped into my head. Hans would be the second invite, then.

Please do video the Christmas globe wind off..only problem I don't do Instagram. I love the book Polar Express, but don't like the movie at all...too long and not true to the book. I just bought a very nice looking and newly translated Dickens' A Christmas Carol. My older book includes also Dickens' The Chimes. Charles has very well understood that goodness, compassion and generosity are such sugar-coated ingredients that must be counterweighted by some saltier flavourings like stinginess, greed and cold-heartedness. At the moment reading Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men In A Boat (1889). Lastly, your mentioning earlier about living in the present moment. Yes, difficult. Very often our mind is already hurrying in the next thing when physically we are still in the previous thing. I remember one guy who once walked my country head to toe, once cycled it and once canoed it. When asked what he was thinking during the hike, he said that he was planning the next one! I think memories allow us live in the past too. And dreaming makes it possible to live in the future. To some measure. Perhaps...

Hey marie! I am extremely loving your channel and I am looking forward to start reading classics I haven't read more than 2 classics in my life, so it would be extremely helpful if you make a video on classics for beginners

Thank you for all of the book recommendations and your fondness for Christmas. If I could invite one author to Christmas dinner, it would be between Jane Austen because she's hilarious, or Edgar Allen Poe because he seems like the kind of guy who needs someone to invite him to Christmas dinner. I love decorating for Christmas with my parents. We put on Bing Crosby, open boxes of chocolates, and put everything up. It's so cozy.

Being called Shirley Temple as a kid is the universal experience of curly haired girls. I also watched that version of Heidi all the time growing up! At least I think it's that version. I actually never had the movie but my neighbor did and she let me spend the night pretty often when I wanted to and we usually watched that. She's a handful of years older than me (I don't actually know how many, lol) so in hindsight that's so sweet and I'm thankful she didn't mind hanging out with a 6 year old on weekends when she was probably in middle school. AHH, there's so much I want to read this month but I think I'm going to focus on things I've started that I'm still in the middle of, certain books of series I'm reading, and a few books I didn't end up picking up but planned on reading them sometime earlier this year.

Oh god, that's so stunning that you're interested in Russian literature (saying as a Russian girl hahah) I can't even describe this feeling of satisfaction that there're a lot of people in the world that find my home country's literature interesting and fascinating❤️ unfortunately, most people in Russia have read our classics even less than you have... But anyways, thank you for this curiousity and interest in it, that's priceless!!

I have the Very Scandinavian Christmas book that is in the same series as your Russian one! There is also a German one I want to get next year! :) Also, I agree with your hesitancy on Norwegian Wood for Christmas. It is quite depressing and dark. Definitely does not leave you feeling happy or cozy! Have you ever read The Willows in Winter? It is not written by Kenneth Grahame like the original Wind in the Willows (one of my absolute favorite books), but I love the animated movie of Willows in Winter so I have a feeling the book must be as good! It has lots of Christmasy vibes. I think the author, William Horwood, has a specific Wind in the Willows Christmas book, too, but I hadn't heard about it until recently.

The best Heidi was the tv mini series by Walt Disney 1993. The scenery is beautiful! If you can find it please watch it. I think you will enjoy it. My favorite Christmas movie is A Christmas Carol the 1938 version. It follows the original book. One tradition that I remember is that Mama made us choose one present to leave under the tree to be opened on New Years' Day. I never knew why. Maybe it was to end the year with presents and start the year with a present. I could hardly wait to open that last present. Talk about torcher!!!

When my son was a baby, I read him the Canterbury Tales and gave him a William Shakespeare doll. He always hid Will under chairs or pillows. Sadly, I am the only reader in my house! I just do not understand.

I JUST discovered Richard Burton's "Christmas Story" which describes his Welsh childhood. It's not cheerful but full of meaning. Also A CUP OF CHRISTMAS TEA about a young boy visiting his aunt.
