I'm reading The Turn of the Screw right now. I'm really enjoying it, but woo boy, James's writing style is so dense 😂 I'm just like, spit it out, Henry! I swear, it's like he has to preface every sentence and write like a thousand asides every sentence. But the story is so good and spooky.

I totally agree with you about Never let me go!! Gosh, it really moved me! Still struggling to find words to describe why this book is so powerful. It makes one want to step in and fight for those poor doomed beautiful characters. It made me so very sad and angry that I had to keep reminding myself: “it’s just a book, it’s just fiction, calm down”. And it is so well written. It’s a modern classic!

I have not read The Great Alone, but hearing you talk about it made me think of The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. It's more of a winter book, but also set in Alaska and the setting is so important. It's got magical realism, is very emotional, and has a splash of Russian folklore as well.

The concept of 'Perfume' sounded interesting when I first heard of it, then people started reading and reviewing it and the idea of it just gave me the creeps so I can't read it! Everyone must read 'Macbeth', love, love, love it and those three witches, so iconic! 'Frankenstein' not my favourite book either, Caroline. 'Anne of Green Gables' is a must read and the series in general, cozy and beautiful.

Hi Carolyn I watch your videos on occasion. You're the only book reading RU-vidr whom I genuinely respect. There a odd older fellow on RU-vid who opines about books and is interesting in much the same "odd" way, and there is a young bearded fellow who visits thrift stores buying books and opines about Science Fiction, but neither is as thorough and sensitive a reader as you seem to be. Congratulations! No other book RU-vidr compares. BTW, I seem to recall that Dickens himself preferred Great Expectations just as you do.

@@CarolynMarieReads I (of course) did 🍃♡ I really hope you get to reread Frankenstein, but I know it's not for everyone :) I personally enjoy the vast amount of symbolisms and the role that the subconscious plays, if we see the creature as a double figure (doppelgänger). My final thesis as an undergraduate was actually on the correlation between this novel and Freud's "The iceberg theory" [not Hemingway's, but it could be related to it in a (Heming)way as well] Happy reading!

Thank you for the list. I doubt I'll get to many of them, but one tries. As far as Fall suggestions go: Every couple of years I re-read Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse, always in the Fall. Not quite sure what the connection between the two is, but that's when I always choose to pick it up again. It is certainly a heady mix, if it is nothing else. As far as ghosts and graveyards go, I am currently (slowly) re-reading A Fine and Private Place, by Peter S. Beagle. I'm afraid I can't give it a ringing endorsement, but it must be one of the first books you could classify as Urban Fantasy, if it is nothing else. References to President Eisenhower, etc., will doubtless hopelessly date it for some. It also seems to have gone out of print, and though copies are available at Amazon there is neither ebook or audiobook for sale.

Hi, CarolynMarie, thank you for sharing ! How comes I want to read every book you’re recommending, even if it is fantasy? Beside Harry Potter and Lord of the rings, which I both love, I never pick it up, and now I’m (almost) ready to read Game of Thrones… 'Great expectations ' and some books of Ishiguro I wanted to read for ages… So my autumnal list has expanded a lot. So far I never could come into DORIAN GRAY, although I love all Oscar Wilde's plays and ran to the theatre, whenever a play is on stage. Maybe I’ll give a new try. In autumn I love the Inspector Gamache series from Louise Penny, situated in Canada, even the (German) covers are so beautiful, you think of maple syrup and 'hygge' in the small village of Three Pines, where also unhappy things happen, but Gamache always find out whodunnit and even why. His beloved wife Reine Marie at his side inspires him and helps him by understanding his difficult job as chief of Sûreté and later after retirement. A cosy book shop and a bistro and the many bizarre but lovable characters are the cream on the top. Wish you a wonderful autumnly read, love, how you made different sections, for witch lovers, people who want to cry by candlelight😂… very creative ideas! Love, Monika❣

I loved "The Shadow of the Wind", again, read it in its original version (Spanish), which is not very easy, as the author uses lots of very particular expressions. It might be interesting to know that this is the first part of a series of 4 books, a couple of years later I bought the whole series for my Kindle, again in the original version, and by now I have read 3 out of 4 books. The first two I liked very much, the third one I didn't like a lot, it was very sombre. Hoping that the fourth one will be great again. Meanwhile the author has died. Last year I also read "Wuthering Heights", again in its original language version (English is not my mother tongue). I had a little booklet to help me with some of the Yorkshire dialect. I loved it, though it is a very special kind of story. I also read "Perfume" in its original version (German), it felt really easy to me to read it in that language, I loved it, unfortunately I had already seen the film years before reading it, yet I loved the book.

My book of choice to be added to this lovely list, would have to be 'Jane Eyre' (followed up with a couple of film adaptations from over the years to also be enjoyed under the blankets with a hot beverage. That I purchased two further editions of it just this month is a testament to my choice, lol)

I just read We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Alas, I made the mistake of reading the foreword first and it contains a big, fat spoiler. I don't remember being that angry regarding a book in a long time. To be clear, it was a newer edition, not the one you showed. Despite the spoiler, I enjoyed it. The sisters and Uncle Julian are all oddly likeable.

Just started watching you channel and have enjoyed it. Your love of these books comes through clearly. I have not seen enough to know if you read much science fiction, but if you like "Klara and the Sun", you may like "An Unnatural Life" by Erin K Wagner. A cybernetic organism is found guilty of murdering a human worker, but insists he is innocent. His lawyer must determine grounds for appeal and overcome her own prejudices. Think "To Kill A Mockingbird" meets "I robot."

Game of thrones was a good show. I wish I read the book first though, because having seen it already I couldn’t quite get on with the book no more.
