The Franna Crane project continues! In this video, we take a deep dive into the complete restoration process for each stage of the Franna crane boom. We'll be stripping all the components off the boom, sandblasting with our rapidblast SD10 dustless system, and performing thorough crack testing with our brand new magnaflux magnetic particle tester. But there's a twist! During the sandblasting, we uncover a major hurdle - one of the boom extensions is heavily rusted and corroded. Unfortunately, it's beyond repair and needs complete replacement. I was actually thinking about what, if any, precautions against critters you guys take when handling items that been outside for some time. I did some work in Arizona on some car proving grounds and vehicles that had been parked outside for some time were always checked for rattlers before doing ANY work on them. They used to crawl up and hide in underbelly of the vehicles…….

Kurtis, Karen and Homey, another great video. The outtakes were hilarious as always...btw, my wifes poodle was un-neutered and used to lay on the tile floor like that, like he was cooling his "goods"...my wife never found this quite as amusing as me. I admire your "live and let live" handling of the Eastern Brown. I spent a fair amount of time in California's Mojave Desert as a teenager and never had quite the same attitude towards the high-desert sidewinder rattle snakes. Interesting as always to see the progress on what is most definitely an on-going labor of love.

The rust was worse. The danger noodle was just doing what is natural for it and they do help keep down the rodents so as hazardous as they are there is a benefit to them. The rust is just a danger with no benefit.

I can't wait for the re-assembly... This video, plus the prior one with boom disassembly, and the thought of trying to re-assemble this complex boom has my mind in a spin... Kurtis has proven his worth, time & again tho... So I'm sure he can do it & it'll be better than new when complete... It still blows my mind a tad! :)

Project vehicles, of any kind, are like onions. You start peeling back the layers, and you start finding broken/rusted out components. You can try your best to avoid this, but it's not always possible. Also, funnily enough, the crane was only superficially functional, the brakes didn't really work, and the engine was toast. Sure, you could get it to run, but best case, they misstated how old the engine was, worse case it was an outright lie.

I don't know what it's like in Australia but here in the south of France commercial machinery are like a form of currency. Every penny you spend on a machine you will get back, and some. I bought a nice Case 580 SLR for €20k two years ago. I've spent €4k on refurb and a dealer just told me id get about €28k for it now. I'm looking for a rotating Telehandler and even a 25yr old dog will fetch €40k at the moment.

He reminds me of My Mechanics, just an a MASSIVELY INCREASED scale. MM takes old tools and refurbishes them to BETTER than factory/original. Curtis does the same.

@@andrewpowell6457 That's what I figured when I did a much (MUCH) smaller project, but it doesn't really work that way. Yes, when you've got the correct parts the video will help you put it back together, but you still need to make sure you know what goes where, and similar looking items may still be different enough to matter. If you just chuck it all in a big pile it's going to take AGES to get it sorted again, so I hope they've got some buckets, crates or bin labelled "boom section 1", "boom section 2", etc...

Every time you remove a component from the Franna my anxiety goes up. Like how is this guy able to keep track of every nut, bolt, attachment, ect and make sure it is reassembled in the proper order.

I have to admit, I really love your projects more than I do your jobs. This series on the crane has been so cool to watch. Same with when you make special tools or upgrades. Sure the customer jobs pay the bills, and I enjoy them, but the projects take the cake for me. Maybe because I love doing custom projects, mostly trucks and stuff.

I'm with you on the projects and 'shop made tools' vs actual paying jobs! The lateral thinking that goes into design and manufacture of tools that don't exist and may only be used for this job, is inspiring to say the least. Not a machinist, nor a welder, but the out of the box thinking is what assists me in my own problem solving. A true educator at work. Thank you.

I took a cruise along Australias coast. One of the stops was in Brisbane.. I looked up CEEs location and it wasn’t farm from the dock. On a lark, I rented a car and drove to the work shop. While Kurtis was very busy, he took time out to visit with me for several minutes. I also had the chance to meet Karen as well as Troy. What great people they are. If you read this Kurtis, thank you again for everything!

I watch way too many rebuild and refurb vids on RU-vid, but I love them! I have to say this crane refurb is my absolute favourite! Seeing an actual engineer rather than a mechanic or a body guy so the work is super interesting. There's tons of detail, the filming and editing is just perfect for this format (machine building/refurb) and so many other RU-vidrs could do with watching these and taking notes on how it's done. Also, you don't have to be building a multi thousand dollar race car or motorbike to be really engrossing, this crane build is totally addictive viewing.

@@teeanahera8949he is an engineer. There are countless types of engineer. He's a machinist engineer, like myself. There's also mechanical engineers, structural engineers, civil engineers, even electronic engineers. These are all very different disciplines with educations from a couple of years upto six years to qualify.

I worked at a large power plant for 30+ years with many great maintenance technicians, but Kurtis seems to have the knowledge and skills of about a half dozen of them ... all-in-one. Plus a hard worker to boot. PS I was wincing at one point when he put down that torch and was prying on the large pulley, seemed close to me! Great video.

@@elric9892 While i have done a dye penetrant crack check a few times, I have not done the mag particle check myself (that I can recall), which I think in my day was done with powder, no sprays. I can't tell you if a mask is recommended for that. I mean hell, I used to climb thru boilers that were full of pyroclastic ash, and wore mask .. sometimes. When I started working in 1978, a lot of guys refused to wear hardhats and safety glasses, different times then.

People often underestimate one of the MOST important assets a man can possess. Knowing how to do a thing is important, but the most valuable asset a man can possess is wisdom. Wisdom is knowing when to use which skill for the most benefit. It is the old adage of when the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, and after watching every video CEE has, it is apparent that Curtis' toolbox is full! What impresses me the most is his broad knowledge of electrical, mechanical, structural, hydraulics, metallurgy, machinists, fabrication, etc. I know people that specialize in one thing, but Curtis specializes in EVERYTHING!

@gallagher68 Pretty sure he's done an apprenticeship in something engineering related such as a boiler maker/machinist but like the rest of us. If he doesn't know, he has the greatest tool ever created in human history, the internet, where you can learn everything and usually for free. For instance, I fixed an air conditioner that I thought was going to cost me hundreds if not thousands to call an A/C mechanic in but I found out from the internet that the usual problem with an A/C is that the starting capacitor has blown. I took the starting capacitor out of it's circuit. tested it, found it was dead and went and bought an $11 replacement and soldered it in...A/C has been working flawlessly for years since. There's even lessons on how to wipe your butt after going for a number two on the internet. So yeah, you can learn anything and everything from the internet.

This channel is a real escape for me in the evenings, I spent too many years doing office "Engineering", and here is an operation with minimal bureaucracy, YEARS of skills and experience on display, the proper tools, and a real hard work ethic. Getting REAL stuff done, and done really WELL! Thanks for putting your work out there, and all the editing involved too, no small undertaking. @@RaceBanner_ No, it's not like that, dear friend, currently the main thing that prevents traveling these days is the difference in the value of the Iranian currency with other common currencies in the world!! And it is true for RU-vid that this social network and most other programs are filtered in Iran and cannot be used without a proxy, but it cannot be done at the moment. Where are you from and what do you think about the country of Iran and its people? Have you ever had an encounter with Iranians in your country? Please tell me your real opinion!

My loving wife, of 40 years and I, love and look forward to watching your videos. Each day we both say, "I wonder if Kurtis and Karen have made a video, and I wonder if Homie is in it!" We have 2 dogs ourselves and know how much of a blessing they are. Your videos are not only informative, but we love the quality in how you and Karen do the editing, it makes watching them a wonderful experience and never boring. Our son is a welder/fabricator and he is impressed with Kurtis workmanship and knowledge of the repairs he does and has learned a lot from him. Another installment of the Franna Crane project. This going to be an epic playlist. The attention to detail Kurtis is doing the crane will be better than new. I'll bet Franna are watching this series and taking notes. What I don't understand is why the 27 (at the moment) people who have disliked this video bother watching. Weird!!! Or they are just haters. Good thing Homey wasn't around when that Eastern Brown slithered around the concrete, he would have wanted to play with it. Wouldn't end well for Homeless.

Hey Kurtis, I really wouldn't mind watching 3 hour videos at a time of this restore. It is fascinating. I am willing to bet everything on it will be 10x better than factory, like water tight conduit for wires instead of just wire looms. You have the perfect skill set to make all new bushings, brackets and fixtures that are more than functional, they will be spectacularly elegant and precise.

Engineers should have a minor in mechanics, so they get a good idea of how bloody stupid some ideas are, even if they're physically (barely) possible :) Car mechanics, for instance, have a lot to say about access to parts to repair. For instance, you shouldn't have to remove the bumper and side panel to access a headlight... (apparently true for at least one model of vehicle from one manufacturer. And having the car die because of a cascade failure caused by a rear brake light failure? Should never happen).

@@damianwright3690partially agree - certainly working alongside trades does wonders for developing engineering expertise, but I disagree about it being a minor. Think of the worst engineers you know. How likely is it that their 'Minor in Mechanics' becomes a 'I'm qualified, do what I say'? Humility and respect between trades and engineers is critical - and often not present. But agree with you, I'm learning everyday, and CEE is certainly part of that.

Well, the family watched this after dinner. When they finally got tired of me telling them in advance what was going to happen "Watch! He's going to cut the side out of that pin with a torch!" I finally shut up and let them enjoy the suspense. Halgrim did get a bit upset when he saw Homie with rabbit ears, however. Thanks so much for another excellent video on our favourite yard crane! Crikey 40c and deadly snakes, hope you don't find the parent snake. I was once down in the Persian gulf in 1956 as a 16 year old seaman it was 130f in the shade, plenty of sand but no snakes. The decks were so hot to touch them was to burn your hand. Really enjoy all your videos. Ed

Another Great Video from CEE. The rebuilding process is as true as I have seen. You always run into issues that adds time and money to the job. This is a good example of why trades people are just tougher than the rest of the world. First, can you imagine the mental resilience it takes to see that sandblasting through to the end? It looks fun at first, but you’d have to push yourself through to completion after about 5min of “fun”. Second, the physical requirements to hold a hose, under pressure and force for the hours it takes to complete this. This is why, when you’re quoted high dollars something like this, you don’t argue because most folks just can’t do it.

Back in the 90s I worked for a large (CF) trucking company in NE Ohio and every year I was to Magnaflux all of the terminal's crane and hoist hooks. It took me a full 2 1/2 days to finish since I couldn't shut down any department for very long causing a lot of walking back & forth. Much older equipment then and really nice to see a new set-up out of the box. Thank you!

That form of crack testing is what old school car engine builders call magnaflux testing here in the States. This is an interesting use of the process.

Old School, we use it on new weldments in our shop. The fluid is the way to go, I never both with the background if it is freshly sandblasted.

Yaaay!! More Franna at last!! Yes, I'm quite possibly insane for suggesting this, but I do hope you'll consider my suggestion of re-painting the crane in California hippie style by using the various other manufacturers' paint colors to re-paint the various components of the Franna so that it's a brightly-colored patchwork that will instantly be identified with your company!

Curtis, I love watching your videos and even though I have been in the industry for 45 years, I still learn something from you. Karen is also an awesome videographer and editor. I couldn't look through all 2000 comments (as of this comment), so if what I'm about to say has been said I apologize. For Magnetic Testing (MT) to be effective, you need to orient the magnetic field lines in a cross pattern for each area of weld you are examining. This is because a crack or liner flaw won't leak the magnetic field unless the lines of force are roughly perpendicular to the flaw. So every time you place the probes across the weld, it should be at a 45-degree orientation to the weld path, and then apply it 90 degrees to that, to detect flaws in any orientation. In addition. you stated that you turned off the magnet to reveal or look for any indications. This is known as the magnetic retention technique and it is only done for highly retentive materials. You need to keep the magnetic field on while you are applying the indicating medium for most typical fabrications. I am an ASNT Level III in 4 methods, including MT and you can DM me to get my credentials if you like.
