There are butchers in every profession. If you watch this video then you have witnessed exactly what I'm talking about. When you have ZERO knowledge of steel, metal fatigue, heat and welding, you actually believe that you can repair anything. What should have happened was when the telescopic arm was on the truck it should have gone straight to the scrap yard. End of story.
These people don't have the luxury of replacing culture, they'll do whatever it takes to fix it and if it breaks again then they'll fix again over and over, it's not the first time they're doing it they're experts in fixing, look at the setup they're using that means they do this for living.
Everything I see there is terrifying! if the crane arm has bent at this place it is because there is the maximum effort exactly here. Seeing how the metal is treated in this place that needs the most solidity not only hurts me as a metallurgist specializing in welding and metal control, but is absolutely dangerous!!! Twist the metal that has been bent, therefore whose structure has been modified, by applying a second force to it, therefore by subjecting it to a second degradation, to then heat it to red color by medieval means, and then cool it by putting the water on it is metallurgical madness! Not to mention these welds which are not really welds, but rather metal fly droppings which I would not even want to repair the wheel of my wheelbarrow!!!! Are these people aware that it is a heavy lifting device and that they can cause an accident with their accumulation of technical nonsense? If I was a believer, I would pray that there was no death because of these madmen....
They're all fully aware, did you know that for every worker who dies, there will always be two more to replace him. It's a very sad element to the infrastructure in the way of health and safety. If this freaks you out then don't watch any of the ship dismantle videos. The life of most of the machinery is from China, when the Chinese wear it down to make it uneconomic to repair, then they bodge it for a bit longer. Only then will it be sold to their neighbours the Pakistanis or the Indians, in fact anyone who wants to buy it. These guys will bring it back to life omitting some aspects of the safe operations like the safe working weight guide that would identify if the load was too much red light would be flashing away, they rectify it by taking the bulb out! Not all workshops are the same, the Pakistani truck company repairers smashed up trucks, to which they strip to the chassis, take all the rivets out, streighten the chassis by hydraulic ram, they make two channels that it inside the original rails so tight they had to be pressed in together. Then they rivet the kit and caboodle together and rebuild the whole truck back together and you would struggle to find any accident damage to it. It amazes me that it goes on but the infrastructure isn't there to check that any machines that's been damaged so much that they shouldn't be back in use until fully tested by a government body, not an independent company that the results can be fudge, just my two penneth worth sir!
@@theonlybuzz1969 It's been almost 50 years since I started working in metallurgy, welding, boilermaking and piping and I have spent my life in workshops since the age of 15. I have seen films about ship dismantling in India over 30 years ago and have also worked in Africa, China, South Korea and about 20 other countries in Eastern Europe. is, so I'm fully aware of what's going on there. I have seen welders working in conditions that you may not even imagine and workshops in China, Chad, Cameroon, Morocco and all over North Africa, we work in flip flops, we welding without a mask, we cast the metal without even a simple pair of gloves, and where we work without any machine. So let's not even talk about security. Yes I saw all this, with my eyes seen in reality and not only in videos. But is this a reason to accept that this continues in our time and not be indignant that these people take risks and make other workers take them? Is this a reason for not giving the same importance to the lives of these workers as to those of more advanced countries? Is this a reason not to write that this practice is totally prohibited for the good of all? I have read the comments on similar videos where people rave about the know-how of these workers when what they are doing defies all the rules of good practice and it is also for these people that I am writing these comments. I cannot bring myself to watch these videos laughing at their ignorance due to lack of training and their material deprivation, as some do, and I express my indignation.
I do admire the work being done on this boom section, however I don't think I'd want to stand anywhere near this crane when lifting a heavy object! I was taught that steel has a nasty habit of 'remembering' where it was bent and at that point it will fail sometime soon.
1970s-80s Grove Tms 35 or 60 possibly.. They don't have resources or knowledge of AWS ASME advanced welding structure s sadly. Respect for their efforts to get it done .. Dangerous countries to work in .Press is impressive though.
That boom is a homemade reconstruction in the first place, it bent because it is made from mild steel with no reinforcement or gussets on the inside. Somebody will be killed by this cobbled together bullshit of a thing. Edit... I'm only 10 minutes in and pulling my hair out already will update as I go 😅 2nd edit, the fire on the inside... 🤣🤣🤣 pointless. No where near hot enough. 3rd edit...the welding is atrocious. Simply awful weak welds. 4th edit... these people literally have no idea what they are doing.
For some one who has repaired many a damaged boom from ships cranes. This definitely gave me goose bumps. Everything that should not be done was done. Most of these booms are made from high tensile steel for which there is a very strict welding procedure. Followed by NDT and finally a load test. Fingers crossed on this one. Hope nobody gets hurt.
In a country where life has little value you can take risk like this . This boom will never be as strong as it was, will never have the same capacity or strength

In Canada welders are taught metallurgy. If the thin boxed beam bent like that the whole structure has been over stressed and metal fatigue and micro cracks in the steel have already occured. Once a crane beam has been damaged from the yeild strength of the metal being surpassed. It should never go back into service but rebuilt from new material. Crane booms are made of fine grain structure high tensile strength steel- typically T1 steels of over 100,000 lb tensile strength requiring specific filler rod, heat input and approved welding procedure. The bent sections show the material has been elongated into a course weak grain structure that has lost it's tensile strength. This would not be allowed to be repaired here due to engineered saftey regulations and government restrictions on crane serviceing. The man welding with no eye and skin protection proves these gentlemen should not repair cranes at the cost of their vision and others saftey.

Seeing as how the load limits were carefully followed before... im sure nothing bad will happen when this is put back in service with such severely compromised structural integrity
The fact that this shop exists tells you all you need to know about machine safety, proper use and load control in this country. People are great with cosmetic repairs. No clue about how to put this back into service with a known de-rating because of the repair. It will bend again, someone will be killed. Life goes on for the rest.
@@sidehop hey smart ass, the point is that you can't repair it properly. Its not as simple as simply straitening it. Once bent it'll always be weak there no matter what, because they dont have to tools nessisary to reharden it to the original values. In short, you don't repair, your replace.
@@psychicspy in many cases its actually not more economical. 1) the labor to examine, remove, disassemble, repair, reassemble, & remount is often much higher than simply examining, then remove and replace. 2) Refurbishment is something that puts the liability of the quality of the repair on you, the repairman, vs putting that liability on someone else. These are why modern appliances, phones, vehicles and so much more are designed with replacement in mind more than repair. Vehicles and appliances are still often "repaired", but what really happens is the repairman removes the faulty part and replaces it with a new or in some cases a refurbished version. The refurbishment of things is on the decline in mosy cases unless someone specializes in that refurbishment. I believe, because of the liability and cost of such a service .
As a crane repair welder/inspector with over 20 years experience, this is terrifying. Definitely third world country work. I inspected (and ran away screaming) a 200 ton rated hydraulic crane in El Salvador. It had the load chart book for a 100 ton model. The load chart panel in another crane was covered with porn pix that were glued in place. And out of 8 boom pendants, not one matched another in length.The operator told me that the outrigger 2 feet off the ground was the hoist limit.

Love the fact it basically opens with a guy standing on the truck bed transporting the boom that’s ties down with one cable. Good thing he’s wearing his safety Sandals and has his fall protection rag wrapped around the cable of the truck’s crane arm. 🙄

@@seventhson27 from experience i can say those sparks aren't anything to worry about, i weld barefoot all the time and rarely ever get burnt.. i get more far more burns from hot chips going between my toes running the lathes
Its nad enough you cut and welded it. Even if you had put plate steel patches on the inside its not good enough. Its going to break again only worse. Only way too fix that is to replace the whole thing. That's a shameful fix.
They had the equipment to cut out and replace any damaged sections, They had the technology to clean the metal prior to welding and to weld reinforcing gussets either inside or outside the damaged area. This was 100% pure cosmetic surgery, That boom won't make it through it's first day.
Back when i was an apprentice welder my mentor said if you can step over it then you can weld it.. many welds are intentionally welded over a gap to insure full weld penetration

If they would flip it over and put it up on blocks and put a block on top in the center and thennpress it, it would be a lot easier on the press and more efficient. Press works best pressing at one central point then two points spread apart.
in industrial matters it is necessary to avoid saying anything. Rolled sheets have a certain structure due to their manufacture and which determines their mechanical resistance. If we modify this structure by bending or shock or temperature etc... we reduce this resistance and doing what we say would be worse than the harm. It would cause a second damage to this steel which has already suffered a first. The only acceptable solution is to put all this steel in the overhaul!!!!
These people don’t have a Walmart, Lowes or HomeDepot. The only option is to do a half ass repair that structurally will only hold up for a short period of time because one the steel is compromised and two they never reinforce their welds and they only put patches.
The crumpled zone should be at least cut away and replaced with new panels, not forced and smushed from the other side by the press first.. I wonder how long before it bends again under load.. Also the welds look porous with some questionable root. It looks just "go for it" and "do it as fast as you can".. 🙄

I’m no expert but the metal that’s been heated and knocked about and welded cold so no longer its original strength. Are the welders qualified, will the boom be overload tested afterwards, I recon not. Seeing the way it was craned off the lorry loader you can tell these are incompetent people trying to earn a living. Incompetence = danger for any one on the receiving end of their efforts. I see it all the time in the construction industry.
Two arrogant bosses seen regularly hanging around doing nothing productive but being arrogant... while barefoot workers in dirty rags are a step away from serious injury. You can't restore structural integrity to a crane beam in this way: major accident ahead!
That is from a boom section from a Grove hydraulic telescopic crane made here in Pennsylvania USA. Boom is made of T1 high strength steel very light weight thin special metal. Must be welded repaired in specific manner as factory states or will fail. Be careful men. I know you have limited resources . Respect for you guys . Salaam Walykum Akhi Shalom..
Oh my goodness I do not believe I just watched this. I was wondering how big the steel reinforcing would be that would get welded over the bent section. I certainly didn't expect none.

This world so needs modifying. Like the dog ball chucker that I have to hacksaw and expand in the fireplace heat to hold regular size tennis balls.
I am no expert and from what I have read in the comments, this isn't gonna end well. But as a non expert, common sense would have told me to at least brace the inside. Even as a non expert, even I know you can't rely on just those welds alone. These people are NUTS!!!

I would think it would be better just to cut the bent section out and weld it back together with reinforcement the crane would be shorter but that would probably be a good thing considering the person using it didn't know the original weight limits anyway.
That would be the worst thing you could do after what these MORRONS did of course! I'm a Union Ironworker and my job for 35yrs was w/ the crane, and a cranes boom, no matter what kind of cranes it is, is supposed to be able deflect according to its lifting chart located in the cranes cab ( unremoveable sticker). That part of the telescoping boom did what it supposed to do, stiffen the boom "snap"!, goodbye load line!
I do not think Cutting Edge Engineering could do a job as good as these blokes ? No wonder there are many deaths in this country from industrial accidents well done keep up the rough work boys.
It looks like they have done these sort of repairs before. These are Bush mechanics, making do with what they have. I probably would not want to be near that arm when it is put back into service, but hats off for the never say die attitude!
Wearing sandals while working with heavy metal things & welding. Love how dedicated they are to work place safety. On a side note. "Professionals" at streightning a crain boom that was bent (by lifting something beyond it's weight capacity) doesn't matter how streight and perfect looking they get it.. it will eventually snap where it bent. The bend, the heat, and streightning it all weakened the structural integrity. It's scrap.
@@psychicspy given they exceeded it's origional capacity to cause that to happen in the first place I don't have any faith in their ability to determine a new safe weight capacity or adhear to it.

Omg! I noticed that there was the exact same cross cut welds next to this failure point! They did this once before. It’s a lot of work for nothing. It will break again. Insanity!
Every thing that crane boom was once rated for, in lift capacity at the various angles and reach... For your safety, only use that at a 1/4 of what it once was... For example... If it once could lift 1000 lbs, only lift 250 lbs now and even that is high risk dangerous, Just to be safe, that way you can still keep it making money, as I already know the customer will. The boom really needs to be scraped and a new one ordered and the entire unit serviced and re-certified for the well being of your citizens. I can appreciate the attempted craftsmanship to repair anything metal, but, the process of crane manufacturing, and the special alloys and heat treatment and tempering is exceptionally critical for the performance of the machine. Be careful in what you lift, and have a fall radius around that crane that while active, NO MAN can enter. Be safe.
Obviously this is a boom section for a telescopic crane boom, so long as this is not the outer boom section they should be able to use this boom fully retracted at max capacity (assuming the rest of it was fixed properly, which I doubt). This boom section will surely catch and jam when telescoping, especially if they attempt to tele out under load. If it doesn't it is extremely likely to fail and could even do so just with the weight of the boom, winch, hook and rigging. Which would be ideal because it might kill less people then.
These videos are potentially very dangerous, some poor devil may think this is an effective repair. The welding is a joke there’s more slag in there than metal.

The repaired boom is very dangerous to use, it results in fatalities as it has inherent stresses in it due to breaking, twisting and then repairing activities like cutting, welding, hammering, pressing. The original booms are made from metal direct from factory, fabricated and stress relieved. Always use original booms and discard as metal scrap once they are broken, twisted or even dented or corroded heavily.
I just thought these vids ought be compulsory watching for first year Mech Eng students & Apprentices. The assignment to list all the engineering implications of respective actions observed.
and just remember folks you to can have this level of workmanship for your company if you outsource contracts to cheap foreign labour..... lol they should stick to tele sales.....
I’ve watched a few of these videos. The rate of death or losing a arm, foot, leg or both must be high. I wonder how long the welder go without going blind. Must be high turn over rate. Some look like they are only 10 yo. They love the stick welding. Very good videos about what not to do. Notice the older ones have safer jobs but not saying much. I’m sure they have a endless supply of labor. That crane must be from 1900 or older. God must be looking out for them. Guy with the camera has the best job that’s if nothing is dropped on his head.
@@rearspeaker6364 I just got a report from Pakistan. The crane broke again and crushed a few guys. They're fixing it again. Should be back in action in a couple of days. They're putting a sign underneath the crane arm. "DON'T STAND HERE, YOU MORON".
