That's exactly the problem we have as a society these days. My grandmother watched us when I was little, but boomers either don't want to do that, or they want to play "parent" for the kids. It's almost like just making the kids transactions... it's not all about the money. Why not just stay home with them? They need their mother's time more than a nice home, car, and other things. And yes, i know it can be done....i stay home, and i'm married to a rural school teacher- they don't make much money. We make it because it's a priority for us to live this way, so we don't have many things that other people have, and that's totally ok!
School teachers actually make a decent living compared to millions of retail workers in the economy. They also have great benefits. Many people work minimum wage jobs that often have no benefits. They don't even come close to a rural school teachers salary. No amount of prioritizing will make it possible for the mother to stay home. The math simply doesn't add up. In addition, wages have been falling behind the rate of inflation of decades. This means that if you had kids a while ago, then your husband's decent job had much more buying power than even a similarly paying job today.

Because we opted out and have none, since it would be well over $1,000 a month 😳. I know of no other benefits to the job. Aside from that, the point of my comment was missed completely. Children NEED their mother. They should be priority #1. It CAN be done. I know of too many people living in "poverty" who smoke, drink, get hair and nails done regularly, stop for coffee, etc.... cut all those extras out, eat beans and rice, wear old clothes and drive old cars, and it can definitely be done. My husband worked at a private school before he went to the public school teaching, and made less than half what he even does now, and we made it because we used our money wisely... we also paid a tithe to the church regularly as well, and God honored us honoring Him. I'm not saying it's easy- i'm saying it's a need and can happen in most cases if it's wanted!

I'm well researched in their compensation packets as they compare to others in the economy, especially others in non-union jobs. I work with both rural and urban teachers. You might be the one who needs to inform yourself more.
@@kristenyoung7853 As to your main point, you might think it was stressing the importance of having a mom in the child's early life, but what you actually did was shame people who are in a financially less advantageous situation than you, by blaming their problems on their inability to prioritize and waste money, instead of the nature of the economy that they have no control over. You don't know these people at all and you clearly don't know what low end retail jobs pay compared to union jobs like teaching. You clearly have know idea how little money some people make, and how their choice is often between finding someone to help with childcare or going on welfare to stay home. You need to learn empathy and be less judgmental. I work in financial services with teachers, and my mother is a retire teacher. I'm well-versed in their compensation and benefits. You may think that healthcare and sick pay aren't real benefits; and that shows how out of touch you are with the reality of millions of Americans. If you bother to get to know any of the millions of people working without either, you would realized how wrong you are. Then you add retirement and a variety of additional insurance options, and you have a benefits package that millions of people can only dream about, but will never have. In sum, you make the common mistake of assuming that people with problems you don't have are to blame for their situation, because they are morally inferior than you. In some way they are bad and at fault. If they were just better people, their problems would go away. In reality, they are no better or worse than you, they're just unlucky to be in a worse situation than you. Many people have spent their entire childhood and adult lives living on the raged edge and prioritizing is all they know. They're better at it than you or I will ever be. For them prioritizing is the difference between between being homeless or being housed; between their kids eating dinner or going to be hungry. They don't need lectures from you on prioritizing. You sound like a boomer lecturing a millennial on why they can't afford a house, who is out of touch with the current imbalance between wages and home prices. I've been blessed to work with people who run the gamete from poor to rich. I've learned that the poor have real problems that have nothing to do with their values or decisions, but rather circumstances that are beyond their control. Once you understand this inescapable fact of the modern economy, you will appreciate the importance of being less judgmental and more empathetic. When you watch a video like this, your take away won't be that they just need to be better at prioritizing, but rather to appreciate how much better your situation was than the people with the problem in the video.
