Boomers, The Big Sort, and Really, Really Big Churches - Episode 2 - The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill

In the mid-1950s, Rev. Robert Schuller began preaching in a drive-in movie theater in Southern California. He melded traditions like vestments with a theology of post-war optimism and self-esteem. As his ministry grew, guest preaching in his pulpit became a mark of celebrity achievement. Three decades after his drive-in movie days, Schuller would welcome a young Mark Driscoll to the microphone to speak.
To understand the Mars Hill phenomenon, you have to understand how big churches developed in the boomer and Gen X years, how the franchising of churches led to homogenized congregational culture, and how pastors became spokesmen and CEOs. When Mark Driscoll arrived to preach at the Crystal Cathedral, he had already walked a ministry path paved by the likes of Schuller, Bill Hybels, and Rick Warren-leaders who dedicated significant time to demographic research as well as expository study.
In this episode of The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill, host Mike Cosper flips the tapestry of the Mars Hill story to expose the weaving of threads beneath. He explores how the identity of a church can become wrapped around one man and why a host of leaders might fall in step to protect him in order to save the institution.
Here, you can read an interview with David Di Sabatino, director of Frisbee:

Listened to the first episode of Who Killed Mars Hill. This is going to be a painful series to listen to. But there are insights, i.e. paving the way for evangelical embrace of leaders with questionable behavior.

This reminds me of John chapter 6, where a large crowd is following Jesus because of healings, then he feeds the 5000, and they are basically chasing him around the lake, because this is the “guy” who heals and feeds them. Then he tells them that he is the bread of life, and they must believe in him. (What, no more real food?). Then he seriously steps it up and says “you must eat my flesh and drink my blood.” Boom, most of them are out of there. To me, this evokes Schuler or Osteen teaching and ministering to thousands, but then Paul Washer comes and fills the pulpit and brings hard teachings of repentance, belief, and self denial, and 90+ percent of them are gone. For many are called, but few are chosen.

Schuler and avoiding talk of SIN was a problem and IS Today's problem. Younger people today have no idea what is SIN per the scriptures.

I'm out. I can't listen to one more minute. These people don't know the first thing about how manipulation works, and are going to great lengths (how many episodes long is this torture?) to find every other excuse for what happened at "fateful Mars Hill". UGH!!! Props for mentioning and including Diane Langberg, though!!

Perhaps God let Driscoll’s behaviors go viral so the body could pray for him. Where did we get to the point where we treated our brothers and sisters as enemies? We are all people that have huge problems especially in this generation!! Why do we just expose and not pull together to get him, right? He is our brother, just flawed like us all! JM is treated like an idol with a dead church and a religious complex! We all have our flaws!
@lilchicklets

Being our brother or sister doesn't absolve someone of bad behavior. In fact, because he's my brother, I'm going to hold his feet to the flames even more and want him to become a better person. That's what tough love is and I would expect someone who loves me to do the same thing. It's true that hurt people hurt people but that doesn't excuse toxic actions. If he continues to engage in these behaviors then he hasn't learned a damn thing. I pray that he has learned and has changed his approach in how he treats people.

God allowed Driscoll to harm people so that we would pray for DRISCOLL? What a strange take on evil. In what other circumstance would we suggest that God allows evil so we would be prompted to pray for the evildoer?

Please tell me your not naive enough to understand what happened in history. Constantine had a dream of a cross on a shield and it made his troops victorious. Then overnight the pagan temples became churches and heathen priests became “Christians”.

I think the best model for church growth is still the book of Acts; small house churches and when the folks out grow the house, appoint two leaders to branch out and create another house church and when that out grows that house, appoint two leaders to branch out to create another house church, and so forth etc.
