Thankfully she didn't manage to kill any of the children, two of the adults weren't as fortunate. She is still in prison and I imagine her victims are still in therapy.

According to Geldof, he wrote the song after reading a telex report at Georgia State University's campus radio station, WRAS, on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children in a school playground at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California on 29 January 1979, killing two adults and injuring eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime and her full explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day".

Sublime performance of one incredible song! I was listening to some Irish music yesterday for St. Patty's Day and had forgotten how much I love this number. Geldof got a raw deal by people criticizing him and saying he profited off tragedy. How absurd. The role of an artist is to take a current event like Brenda Spencer's dastardly act and interpret it. If they make some money off it, all the better. He said he "wrote a senseless song about a senseless tragedy" and he did but what a song!
i have adored geldofs way of performing ever since i saw The Wall the first time i know it`s Pink floyd`s music but he still plays/performs the role to an A+. And he didn`t let me down here either great song BTW
A masterpiece. Geldof is a much better singer than he was ever given credit for.And this showcases it. A timeless classic based on one of the first ever school shootings in the U.S.
I agree this is a masterpiece! A true classic. I originally thought the song was just about not liking Mondays which I agree with. It's not like he named the girl who committed the horrendous crime.
I remember the school shooting that this song written for. It was San Diego, Ca. back in the late 70's. The shooter was a 16-year-old severely depressed girl whose father had purchased a rifle for her for Christmas. Maybe, he had thought, that it would cheer her up? She is well known as the "I Don't Like Mondays" girl because, that is what she had told the police as to why she had opened fire on an elementary school across the street from her house.
For those complaining about the singing, the song could be considered a threnody for the victims of the shooting. It is appalling that nearly 40 years on America still has not done anything to stop the massacres.
@@josephruggieri1 That's how I found this video. I was just watching a program about the shooting in Chardon Ohio. And they mentioned that the boomtown rats made a song about it. I had never heard it so I looked it and here I am! A sad story indeed. But you do have to admit, he really does look like Jerry seinfield!😎

I'd actually read about that a while ago. Strangely this is the first time I heard the song... It's a good song, and I like how his tones change at certain points. The song is a nice tribute to the events of that day.
