Boonedockery: Introduction to solid fuel stoves. 

This is my second video and I have subbed! If I may, as to Hexamine, it is very hydroscopic (loves water) so it is very important to keep it dry both when storing and carrying. Otherwise it will, fume, spit and refuse to work. It gives off an odour or put another way, it stinks. Now I quite like it because it reminds me of my childhood but it is worth knowing. It also leaves a lot of soot. Old soldier's trick was to wipe your mess tin off on the grass, leaves or dirt. All that said I have loads of the stuff and use it. Hello John, Thanks for an informative video. Originally I had a Sterno stove which was a joke. Unfortunately I thought all these stoves were probably failures as was the Sterno. Because of this I stayed away and optioned for small wood fires to cook on. I got really good at building fires so it was not such a loss. Later I learned how good these little alcohol and Esbit stoves really were. I use them quite often now when I want to go light weight or for short day trips. Back in those young days no one had personal computers and RU-vid did not exist. I love the University of RU-vid and have learned much from it. Thank you for an excellent video.

Great video. When it comes to stoves I think its about picking the right tool for the job. If you need to "cook", cook fast, or cook a lot with base ingredients, then gas or petrol stoves are better for that. But if your cooking tasks only involve heating food, or heating water to boiling point, then these little Esbit stoves are absolutely brilliant and I dont think a lot of people realise how good they are. If you are literally camping, and only require your food to be heated up to a palatable temp, and your cup of coffee made at breakfast, then if you time it right, these little fuel stoves are a very light and compact way to get the job done. I have a full-on pump-up petrol stove that kicks out more BTUs than my butane blowtorch..... but if I was going on an overnight camp it would be insanity to lug around 1kg of metal and fuel. If you just need to make hot drinks, boil water, heat a meal or make Koka Noodle, then these things are the most space and weight efficient things on the planet. You just need to time out your fuel tabs and make sure you have enough in your pocket. And if you dont .... you can still burn twigs on these things and make them work. These things are incredibly under appreciated.

Not a new idea I’m sure, but you can dispense with the cooker/stove altogether. Just 3 nails does the job (as a pot stand). Another great informative video. 👍

You should do a q&a about camping to answer some questions about camping

I use mine to boil water for a coffee when I'm motorcycle touring. People complain that it's slow, I use that time to check over motorcycle & prep coffee & biscuits or what ever. I'm touring & not in a hurry. Solid fuel tab stoves are perfect for this. At campsite, I set up a Trangia alcohol fueled cooker

Thanks for the product information and the 'how to' instruction. I went for the current FireDragon system: it now comes with a detachable plate to block some wind and there are three compartments for FireDragon tabs. That gives the option for varying heat output. Great choice for light hiking/backpacking in mild temperatures.

I'm a believer in solid fuel tabs. I made a round stove out of a small can that fits just inside a small metal cup. Then I pack the cup/stove with fuel tabs and a couple of Bic lighters... and some aluminum foil that I use as a wind break. That's my cooking kit!

I've used the BCB fire Dragon and recently bought a Kuvit Titanium solid fuel stove the great thing about the Kuvit it was only around 15 dollars

I like the way the fuel tab stove work the only thing that ever really bothered me about them is the smell but other than that they work perfectly well in my experience in a really good video oh and I’m watching it two years late I’m going back and watching the videos

Those stoves are great for a car survival kit. I have one in each of my rigs.

Gonna try a larger Esbit burner with more organic fuels( super cedar) or something along those lines.Something about the cyinade,or formaldehyde type gasses says " beware"!.

As far as stoves go, i’ve always used a pocket size gas stove. However i do i keep a small metal stove as well in the even i run out of fuel

Hello Mr. Boondecker, I've used the solid fuel stove for years and have a alcohol stove too. I can rely on my triangia stove to boil river water (5 minutes) so it's drinkable. I find that the solid fuel stove is great for heating clean water but it does not bring water to boil and I've tried more than just one fuel block. Yours Sincerely Steve Clarke

Well done video. True that different fuel tabs behave differently, so you really need to burn a few fuel tabs to learn how they perform before you take them in the field.

Solid fuel and wood burning stoves produce a lot of soot. I don't see why people use them. Alcohol, Coleman fuel, or Gas stoves are the only way to go...........................
