Hope all this makes sense! Boost control was one of the things I always struggled with on the 1.6L, so I want the best hardware available for the new setup since I'll be running double the boost.

how do you learn so much about engines and cars in general I would love to tune and work on an engine but where do i start to learn? do you only learn from working on your own car?

I have learned a lot from working on my own car, starting very small just changing air filters and spark plugs and working up from there. Also reading books, reading a LOT online (almost every day it seems), and talking to people that know more than me or just know about different things compared to what I know. Cars have been my passion since I was little, I've been studying them for almost 20 years!

This is so useful. I'm not trying to get a like or anything but when you are confused about something when it comes to Miata' s, Greg is is the best at explaining and showing how things work and what may happen if you apply any changes to a certain part. He also gives a good demonstration of how to install a part.

Awesome educational video. Too bad those who need to watch it the most never will. Active boost control are mandatory to get the the most bang for the bucks out of the parts. And it's also what will make a 1000hp powered veihicle driveable. RU-vid gurus these days lack so much fundamental knowledge, apart from a few like you and handfull others. Keep up the good work. The world has to much fake news already. Damned if it's going to infest the turbo scene too haha.

That's another good point I need to cover... adjusting boost-by-throttle is super essential for ultra-fast spooling cars. It helped so much for autocross being able to easily manipulate the boost with throttle input.

Currently trying to get my DIYAutotune EBC to work with my 38mm Tial Wastegate. I was hoping to see exactly this video! Thank you. I have a 1993 mx-6 2.0l 4cyl (FS) running 10.5:1 Compression on pump gas and 7.4psi on a .63ar 60 trim t3. Looking forward to getting the EBC going and running 14psi peak.

Hey Greg, two questions: 1: You used your sandwich- plate for sensors and stuff. Does that mean you`re not gonna run an oil-cooler? 2: I hope I get it right, but this is a 1.8 later vvt of the NB miata right? Because that one also has a Oil feed wich you can use for the turbo on the top back of the engine (little inside hex key screw) . Much easier to route to the turbo. Was just wondering. Great videos btw... keep it going!

I think that the "open air" connection is only to relief the pressure from the piston, it never connects to the supply. In normal operation no air should flow from the compressor into straight air. That would be a waste. Great video still, I love the series

I have bought 2 dual port for my Cayenne but the second chamber is leaking through the shaft. It is leaking slow but actually I cannot build pressure with a hand pump - goes to 0.4bar and leaks out pretty quick. Is y{your same way?

Hey Greg! Heads up....the 4 port and Megasquirt boost adjustment is far (F A R !!) from linear. More than one guy has ended up at 30+PSIG on pump gas....As boost climbs it gets LESS linear! Just in case you didn't already know.... Love the vids!

Great video! Love all the information. Are you going to be running your boost vacuum line off the compressor housing or the IC piping? What are your thoughts on running the line pre vs post intercooler?

There's a benefit to each depending on what you are looking for. Post intercooler, you're getting a more accurate reading for what's actually entering the engine. But, a reading straight off the compressor housing is more important if you're concerned with turbo efficiency.

Are there clearance or thermal issues for not fitting the double port solenoid in the original place? Although the mounting holes are most likely to be in the wrong location, you could cut a piece of rectangle bare (10mm or 1/2" @ most) and drill /tap necessary adapting holes.

I wish I had access to parts, but being a doctor in an EU country, I only earn 1000 a month and can't even do aesthetics like fix my seats :D My car looks cool though. Got a fender that needs replacing and it's in my shed, but I can't afford to paint and mount it. :D What do you think of switching the intake to a left side short intake? My engine overheats sometimes (doesn't go past the line) because I have no heat shield from when I bought it and it was wrapped. I think it was done wrong, so I bought new wrap, but the exhaust manifold is right below the intake cone, so I'm not sure if that's good. I actually took the grill off and it keeps it cool, but at 100 mph, it starts overheating. Yep. It's Europe. Everybody gets to drive 100 mph on the highways. I took it up to 125 mph once and that's pretty much the max the 1.8L goes.

You typically want around 2mm minimum to make sure the wastegate stays closed during spoolup. If it leaks exhaust it will KILL your spoolup. The only time you really need to add more preload is if you're trying to raise boost without a boost controller. I used to run about 15mm of preload on Broke&Boosted to get the 4psi wastegate up to 10psi :)

Little confused @7:17 if the boost controller let's pressurized air off into the atmosphere wouldn't that result in a bad boost leak ? I'm probably overseeing something . But great video as usual !

Earl E Bird The safety net there is the ECU's overboost protection. If the vacuum line to the top port fails, the turbo will run maximum boost. That's why it's good to use top quality vacuum lines and inspect them regularly!

Edd Arell Nope, you need anti-lag to build boost at a stop. It changes the ignition timing and ignites fuel in the exhaust, and the explosions spool up the turbo.

Yes it works just fine, your just don't use the bottom port of the IWG. That's actually how I'm running it now, with a 3 port EBC. I had a lot of trouble tuning the 4-port.

Yep! I ran my car that way for a while. I'm also going to be trying out my dual port with just a 3-port EBC solenoid, and just feeding a line directly from the intercooler piping directly to the bottom port. So I can still run a super light spring.

I don't know the PN off hand, but this unit is the one that's specific to Borg Warner small frame turbos, and this is the dual port version. There should only be 1 that fits that description

When u have a single port EBC the air pressure coming from the turbo isn't escaping to the atmosphere (boost leak), the solenoid is open between the actuator and the open port to let all of the pressure escape from the actuator afaik..

How would it let the gate close again? The weird cone thing on my 3-port is a filter so that particles don't get inside the EBC solenoid while letting the excess air though

@@robertoEM2 A 3-port cannot take advantage of a dual port actuator because it's not capable of outputting 2 different pressures. You can either use a 4-port controller, or dual 3-ports, but you'd need to verify that your ECU could control dual 3-ports before going that route. If you have a dual port actuator already, and don't want to use a 4-port controller, you can just hook the 3-port up to the dome of the actuator, and leave the bottom port capped off (assuming it's an internal wastegate. Opposite for external)

Can you clock the compressor housing on this borgwarner turbo? My current Garrett turbo compressor housing can only rotate so much (due to the wastegate mounting onto it) I'm trying to get my compressor outlet facing downwards for a cleaner piping setup. And I'm looking to upgrade to a new turbo anyways.

Ryan Murillo You can clock it any way you want, the wastegate actuator is bolted to the CHRA so it's unaffected. You can also clock your Garrett however you want, you just need a custom actuator mount.

Yo, if you add to much preload on actuator arm, it means preload to turbo, which means increased spring rate, so if I have too much preload won't it overboost the car?

correct, but from factory most cars run 3mm of preload anyway

Yes. It's something that needs to be tuned based on your setup. You should run at least 1-2mm of preload to make sure you don't leak exhaust through the gate when you don't want to. It's an absolute spoolup killer. I had my wastegate adjusted 2mm off in the wrong direction one time and it spooled 1000rpm later than normal.

4lbs psi is just barely making more power than you are losing in backpressure of the turbo set up. so, running 6-8psi is optimum for "low boost" "can feel the boost working".

Once the turbine is spun up the back pressure is much less. Trust me, at 4psi a Miata is much faster than stock!

I would just keep the 3-port solenoid. You can hook that up to a dual port actuator 🙂

Yeah. As long as you have that pressure going under the piston, you have way better control and can run a huge range of pressures compared to a single port setup.

Are you running the 4 port currently Or did you stick with the 3 port? I read on another comment that you went back to the 3 port because the 4 port was so hard to tune.

Went back to the 3 port for a while, now I'm back on the 4-port because I couldn't achieve the boost I wanted. I spent some time tuning it and it's actually working out great now. So I'm running the exact setup I showed in this video

He will blow this engine in a year and go full k24 swap with bmw trans and getrag diff and boost it to 500rwhp 👌🏻

Is that dualport single or twin scroll?

The wastegate actuator is dual port, the turbo is single scroll.
