PiMax lol - like anyone fucking had or has one of those, especially in April. Also this statement: "There is nothing stopping you from using both (supersampling techniques) together"....uh, no, there's NO REASON anyone could ever conceive of why you couldn't use both together...no performance reasons at all. Lol, good video but you had some throwaway comments in there bud. I'm glad you covered the multiplicative effect and performance demands though - just saying, Trump like contradictions.

Yeah so Pimax, I know 3 people personally that have the M1's and I wouldn't be so quick to condemn. Also some people have had the Pimax 4k units for over a year now AND I mentioned it to future proof this video (I know a couple of things most do not at this stage). One of the most common questions I see is can or do you use both Advanced Settings and SteamVR supersampling in combination. Also people want to know how one affects the other. On top of that there are circumstances where you could just as easily use both IF you wanted to, a quick global SS tweak while in VR using Advanced Settings to top up the boost you have in SteamVR for example. Also, technically it is accurate and worthwhile information to have at hand. For ALL of those reasons I have included that comment about using both. My point is, nothing is a throwaway comment in this video. Everything said has an intentional purpose and was carefully considered prior to its inclusion. Glad you liked it and I hope it helped out.

I literally purchased my vanilla vive yesterday. The only thing I was a little sad about was the lower resolution compared to the vive pro. I thought "Well I might not be getting a vive pro BUT perhaps I could use nvidia DSR or add addtional AA to my VR games? I had NO IDEA it was be this easy. I'm rocking a 1080 and a 15% bump in override mode is good enough for me for now. Thanks so much for the video.

Welcome to the Grid, program :) Yeah it's great they made the settings so native. Almost everything I read suggests that with a 1080 you could easily set a 70-100% bump for all apps and games and not notice a reduction in performance. I have a 1070 and permanently set a 30% bump with no issues even in Skyrim, a lot of lighter games will go 50% increase just fine, I'd say go nuts :)

Heh :) Same same but different. Yeah I seen that, its a really good vid. Debate's open whether it a good idea eye fatigue wise but some are raving about that mod. Plus it's cool just modding it to mod it too, pretty nuts ripping up a Vive like that!

Yeah it's great. However there is a small distortion of the image at the edges. Some people have problems with it, I don't.

I've been needing this clarification lately. Thank you for the vid! Any chance a brief overview video of how you handle the various reprojection settings, particularly through the Advanced Settings app? I do mess around with those while in different games, but I don't know if I'm using them in the most efficient way. Not sure if others are either. Thanks again, m8!

For people who have vr games that don't appear on the app list in the settings: if the game is a non steam game, try adding it to your library as a non steam game, then go to it's properties and it should have the option to show the game in the vr category. If it still won't show it will probably show whilst you are playing the game, just pause and go to your desktop and check the app list, it should be there

Can you confirm that this is still how SS is handled in today's SteamVR Beta? (04/06/18). This is all new to me, i sold my OG VIVE about 6 month ago when it was just 1 slide bar for SS. Just got the VIVE Pro a couple days ago. I like the idea that Steam Handles SS on a game-by-game basis now, very handy, probably wont used advanced settings anymore. Cheers.

Hey, this was still helpful but you might want to add something to the video letting people know that it doesn't show per game as your settings show, at least not through steam VR settings as far as I could see. Any advice on the GPU performance that is allowed in the developer tab under the vr settings? I based my super sampling off that and if I hit constant yellow or red I backed off. But I have no idea what it means.

Hey @F4CEpa1m x_0 is "supersampling bypass" for Oculus users is still a thing? I play legit Steam and some cracked games (dont blame me for that) so I guess I still better use overall SS override inside the Debug Toll to apply EVERYWHERE, no matter what I do. Correct me if I am wrong... Got my HMD few days ago and I already want to SS cause the image inside the OG Oculus isnt that good as i thought it would be... Bonus question: is supersampling helps that much when you are using modern 1440x1440 or 1440x1600 compare to when you do that the with and older HMD's? I am already thinking about upgrading after 4 days of playing :D

Question about the in game STEAM performance graph. In STEAM Settings menu. I set my Skyrim VR app to 200% as recommended by the video tab of steam settings. But when I turn my wrist over to watch the graph i see the CPU (I-7 7700K) pegging constant 100% every second. But the GPU is all green (1080TI) So I turned the resolution to 150% and restarted STEAM and windows mixed reality portal. The CPU red performance hovers between 4 and 5 on that scale. No idea what that scale represents of if 5 is a great number to be at. There are occasional 100% spikes especially when I get near gates, or stables, etc. but sporadic. Just spike a few times then back to a 4 or 5. Is this good? Or should I lower the Skyrim VR app resolution. Advanced Settings is at 1.0 Steam Setting VIDEO resolution tab is at 100%

I'm not sure if Windows Mixed Reality differs. Even so, the occasional spikes aren't bad, even a tad of red may not be that bad if you don't notice it in the headset and it not making you motion sick. That CPU usage does seem really high though, I have a GTX 1070 and an i7 7820X and don't get anywhere near that CPU usage at 150%.

Thanks for the response. I tried setting STEAM video and application to 100% and went into Advanced Settings and set that to 150%. Well my game is buttery smooth and looks amazing. That CPU activity of red is a steady 3 to 4 on that graph chart. I wasn't sure if we should be seeing red or not and what was an acceptable level/Reprojection is hovering around .2occasional spikes of course. when I get near some busy activity. Wish I could read my frame rate but it seems good. STEAM says GOOD with a green bar in the Settings menu. Wish it gave a number!

Thanks for this video. It has helped me out immensely. I hate how Steam had changed the Settings, so SS is no longer there as such, and someone else had to make a program which allows users who know what they are doing, to access the more advanced settings, such as supersampling. Curious thing for me, though, and that is the first time I used the Advanced Settings, made a change to SS, then restarted SteamVR (because I thought I had to), when it came back up, the Advanced tab wasn't there, and I actually had to restart SteamVR again to see it once more. Is this a common glitch in SteamVR, or something? Anyway, handy little program, and thanks for turning us on to this little trick.

outdated. app tab no longer there new location: settings video tab 4th option down “render resolution” switch that from “auto” to “custom” and there is the slider :) under that will be a dropdown for app specific res.

I haven't played with Nvidia DSR feature. I'd definitely be more inclined to super sample in SteamVR than Nvidias settings though

There's 2. Both shown in the vid I think? Start SteamVR, click the little arrow, choose settings, then in the global SS menu untick the manual override box.

Yeah I do. I use a display port to HDMI adapter to plug my monitor in to the display port on my 1070. Then run Rift off the HDMI port of the 1070

Isn't the 100% in the new setting higher than the old 1.0? I mean, it has some supersampling by default since then?

I think at 100% it's the same (maybe?) and goes up linearly from there. The old and new default SS values both had/have super sampling applied already when the slider is set to 100%, this is to offset the loss of quality caused by barrel distortion when accounting for the curvature in fresnel lenses

The GearVR lenses on the Vive is the only way to get rid of blurry vision, godrays and glare.

Yeah that's what I've heard. Sounds like a good mod but there a strong argument regarding pupil swim etc.. To be fair, if you don't notice that and it bumps up the res etc then why not

Hey, the current version of steam vr shows cpu usage on the bottom, if I set my SS on 150% or higher the chart shows red all over the place but there's no framerate drop. Should I lower it? I have a GTX 1060 and an i7. Don't remember the rest of the name tho

It won't be dropping frames as Steams reprojection technology will be preventing that, but it means you are likely playing everything at 45fps. With a GTX1060 I wouldn't recommend supersampling to be honest, maybe 1.2 at most on some lighter titles, but most games will likely be pushing that card to its limit without any supersampling at all

For flat gaming a GTX1060 is great, but VR is a lot more taxing and so it's at the lower end of the spectra for VR gaming. Still, totally fine for VR just not great for supersampling

afaik the newer cards from nvidia and amd don't support VR very well afaik the best card for VR still is the 2080ti

This doesn't change the resolution of the physical screen, it just uses more information to calculate the colors of each pixel. It's a significant improvement but it's not the same thing as having more physical pixels. Whether it is worth getting the Pro or not depends on your budget, personal preferences etc.

X_O, do you know why some games don't appear in the application list?? I have been using the list to set my APP SS on the app by app basis, but i installed Dirt Rally last night and it doesn't appear? I guess my option is to check Manual override on the Video tab and change it globally, then remember to set it back to 100% after so my Application settings are still what i wanted? PEACE!

Nah I don't. What games are missing? If it a non Steam VR game then try adding a non Steam game to your library and seeing if it shows up then: support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2219-YDJV-5557 I'll keep looking to see if I can come up with something and let you know :)

No matey, it was Dirt Rally, purchased and installed via Steam. However i read that you still need to Patch the exe with revive for it to work in VR, so i did and It does work. Had a quick blast last night, but when i went to adjust the app setting for it, it wasn't in the list.Probably just due to the weird manner you have to get the game running? So i guess SteamVR would have used the recommended SS setting as i didn't have manual override checked? My Manual override is 132% on a VIVE Pro. Peace.

Ah thats weird. Yeah it would have set to 132%. Nah not an M1 tester didnt have anywhere near enough cash to back one of those :D Of the reviews are good I'll maybe divert the new pyjamas funds in to new Pimax funds :p

thanks for this, also i have found racing sims like corsa and PC to have more adverse effects when you try to push pixel density . racing or driving sims absolutely need frame rates over beauty . or sickness will hit you without warning. it happened to me trying to squeeze more out of my modded assetto corsa . and i hope you become a millionaire from this . you stand tall and beat some ass in this venue.

One mod i'm really happy i used in Assetto Corsa is a mod to disable shadows. They're too taxing on high and pretty poor looking any lower than that so it's a great way for free up some performance at very little cost

Great advice. Shadows are the first thing I reduce. Almost never notice a difference visually but my GPU loves me for it

got a little confusing when you talked about how the global and application can stack. so for dummies like me. should I just leave the global alone, and just set each game to 150 to 200? I have the 1080ti. or should I just leave the application tab set to default and just bump global to 150 to 200?

It's up to you. If you change the global slider it will affect every VR game by that amount, on top of what you have set on the application tab for each game. If you want to have different settings for each individual game (I recommend that) then set the global slider to 100% and use the application tab to supersample each game individually

Man, I’ve been meaning to check this SS on SteamVR out. Thanks for getting this out to us. I like that it is built into Steam and not an additional program like the tray tool. I eventually intended to keep making more videos with more VR games that natively SS like in this video: VR Games With and Without NATIVE SUPERSAMPLINGru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8qyyMDwq_Cc.html but I’m thinking it may be unnecessary now.

Yeah I wish Valve would make an approachable SteamVR interface like Advance Settings. And Oculus too. Supersampling becoming so common now which is good, but the interfacing is a bit cluttered for mainstream use I think

So I came back to this video because I recalled you messing with SS in Steam. I misunderstood and thought it was a native setting now in Steam. I checked because I thought perhaps I had it set high and causing issues. I got a third Oculus Sensor and it seems to have jacked with something. I removed it and still have this issue of dropping frames - even in the Oculus Home. Bought Fallout 4 VR and I think it's running....okay. Honestly, hard to tell what's been going on. I can tell I was dropping frames by using the Performance HUD from the Oculus Tray Tool. Anyway, just when you're ready to sit down and enjoy, there is always troubleshooting.

Oh god, story of my life mate. Fkn troubleshoot troubleshoot troubleshoot!! PC working great today maybe I'll try and.. No, no that doesn't work :) Been seeing frame drops myself a lot lately tbh. Gonna do a reinstall to see if it helps. Might be an update thing or some such.. FO4 apparently is a bit of a hog from what I've read though.

Isn't that the life of a PC gamer though? Haha! 10% play, 90% troubleshoot! If it's working fine now, just give it a week and something will break. Yeah, after a bit of research, I was somewhat pleased (only because it was a release to see it wasn't just me) to see FO4VR pretty much giving everyone no more than 45 fps. I mean, weird considering I have a 1080ti though. I dropped all in game settings as well. Still works and I "swung" the squoosh out of some radroaches. I say "swung" because it took me nearly an hour to realize jabbing and reverse punches miss every time. You actually have to SWING your freaking fist to melee in FO4VR.

Wtf I have my Vive for 2 years and didn't know that the "Application Tab" SS settings and automaticly "Video" SS getting multiplied.... I was wondering why the heck fpsVR tells me that my base ss is 150% + 50% for some games. No wonder that some games running like shit... Thank you for this video.

Because of reprojection, FPS is not easily measured. If there was an fps counter, you would see nothing but 90fps, lol. The best way to measure performance is the dropped frames counter.

EVOLICIOUS you can turn off Async though. I used to use the Oculus frame counter when setting up dirt rally. Only problem was that the app pretty much takes up your whole view

I wouldn't recommend super sampling with a 1050. Your experience will sub par. Just stick to default and when you upgrade your gpu then go nuts :)

Replace the lenses... Fresnel lens is garbage. Try Zeiss lenses (Zeiss. VR One Plus)

Yeah Tray Tool is good. Set SteamVR supersampling sliders to 100% on both tabs amd use the debug or Tray Tool
