I have a 29 gallon, its dirt with a sand cap, very heavily planted. when I originally filled it I used only water I took from a little creek. I put some pond snails, mystery snails, rams horn snails and Malaysian trumpet snails in it. lots of white oak leaves, southern magnolia leaves, the seed pods from the magnolia tree several sweet gum tree seed pods. some sticks and stems I pulled out of the creek. then I just let it be for 90 days , after that I fed it some veggie scraps run through a blender , just a teaspoon or so every couple weeks. there were scuds, daphnia, all kinds of little critters , even these tiny worms that stick up out of the sand and wiggle. so after 8 months I bought a single baby betta and put him in there. he is 6 months old now, I have never ed him anything, he hunts all day and is fat and sassy. I still feed the veggie slurry I started adding some food grade spirulina powder in the blender, its pretty much just a greenish liquid all the bugs and snails go crazy when I put some in, he ignores it and hunts them. thank you Father Fish , for all you've taught me !

I have my to 10 gallon tank filled with scuds copapods snails all the stuff i got from Tony Phillips at Phillips fishworks. Ive had them basically since the beginning of the summer. I had them in buckets then when my cultures got to big is when i got 2 small tanks. I see so much life in both of them,, i put squash, zucchini and other veggies scraps every so often to feed the microfauna. There leaves twigs, sweet gum seed pods driftwood sponges and sponge filters for water movement. I love sitting and watching all the little critters swimming around in there all thanks to father fish and tony phillips.

Like some of those below, I have also started working on a resurrection tank. I started with an order from Phillips and put it in a jar. After a month or so, I introduced some it, along with a leaf culture, into my 5 gallon quarantine tank. The only fish I have in there now are two Panda Corys. They seem to like it there. But now I can finally see some of the micro-fauna that are growing in there. I am going to try to move some of that into my 75 gallon tank. I have an area in there that I have had some leaves and other "stuff" that I took out of a local river. I am hoping I can get enough culture in the big tank to sustain itself, even while providing food for the 30 or so small community fish in there, along with a few small angels. We'll see how it all goes the next few months.

@marct138 22 дня назад
I used to have small little white fleas in my tank that i added from a lake next to my house but then i added Corydoras (orange venezuela ones) and now there are no more scuds/copepods. Can you do this with Corys? Feels like they eat it all instantly. They poke around everywhere under leaves and seedpods.

You got me thinking … what a great goal, to have a self sustaining environment. Would have to be lightly stocked with fish though … but limits in food would control the population anyway. You could use “smart” live food that likes to hide, like an army of scuds and small shrimp species.
@adamgabriel5402

Very glad i stumbled across your videos - I subscribed instantly. I only wish there were an analog of you in the turtle keeping community. I like fish but turtles are my passion, and there are things you suggest for fish that I can't do (or can't easily do) with turtles. Even the layer of dirt below sand is an issue because of digging but I think that can be solved by having a sheet of light diffuser separating them. The plants, though, are the real challenge, and I'm curious if you might have absorbed any ideas from friends who keep turtles. Even the carnivorous species are really destructive so floating plants seem like the only option unless some sort of barrier can be provided for protection. I think a sump with plants is the most common solution I've seen
@FatherFish

a sump or shallow borders to which entry is blocked. Substantially heavy planting also helps overcome predation.

Hello Father Fish! I would like to clear up a doubt. Where I live there is no uncontaminated water flow, so it would be difficult for me to make my food web jar happen. Could I do this by putting leaves from the ground, twigs, a little soil and mixing it with water, and making these beneficial bacteria emerge? Or should I travel further away from the urban center to a spring where I can collect the necessary organic material?
@FatherFish
@FatherFish День назад
You need a place where water is standing in the open for a long time.

Hey Father Fish, is there a raw Japanese fish food you recommended or did I imagine that?
@FatherFish
@FatherFish 19 дней назад
yes, The most commonly eaten seaweeds are brown algae and includes kombu, wakame, mekabu, hijiki and mozuku. Green algae include umibudou and aonori, while red algae include nori and the colorful tosakanori, often used to add color to a seaweed salad or to sashimi.

FF started me off this hobby. My tank has been great for 12 months. Last several weeks i seem to be losing a Platy a week. They were breeding like mad. Two lots of other fish lemon tetra introduced last few months died within a few days. Just put in 6 rummy nose, 3 dead over night. Did before intro. 50 percent water change. But did water check and parameters have risen from zero. Starting to realise all the old pond water leaves and water has all gone. So rescue mission. Get some beneficial bacteria from shop and go get some pond life, leaves, mud. I think the tank is too sterile.

I've often thought it should be possible to build a fully self-contained ecosystem in an aquarium. I suspect the biggest issue would be providing an environment where the prey species will be able to grow and multiply in sufficient numbers to sustain the predator species. I suspect the answer is sparsely populated large aquariums/containers with an abundance of cover and food for the prey species, but I'm not certain how to create such an environment that will provide a consistent supply of food for those prey species.
