A boot scrapper is a great blacksmithing project both for your own home and as a project to sell. The forging steps for this boot scraper are quite straight forward so it makes for a good beginners project.
My name is John Switzer, I operate Black Bear Forge, a small one person blacksmith shop located in southern Colorado. My current focus is shifting away from commissions and customer orders and towards education through these videos on RU-vid. Thank you for watching

I grew up down south, where nearly every home you walked by downtown had a bootscrape. The mud is more clay than mud, and it stains things. I've seen a lot of bootscrapes and while the friligree style is nice and decorative, I loved the dachshund bootscrap with its badger bootbrush companion. Sadly, folks take them out and toss'em because they're at the foot of the steps leading to the front proch and landscapers are lazy. ....but, I still hope that dachshund and badger are someplace safe.

Prettier than the one I did (based off some I saw in at a homestead out west). Mine I punched slots in the legs, and formed a flat tennon on each side of the blade, then wrapped the excess tenon around the back of the leg.

I'd like to see a video on the geometry of some of the tools that you use, like the hot cuts and center punches. I'd like to make some of them but I'm not sure what angles to use to get the most durable edge or point for whatever use the tool is designed for. Could you do a short video on getting proper tool tips?

Another delightful video, John. You mentioned Beulah -- several years ago, went to Pikes Peak for the races. It's a beautiful part of the world there. My favorite tip on curves is to use a pair of clamps and a thin strip of straight grain wood. Put clamps on the end points of the curve, put the wood strip between them, and push the middle of the wood strip until it is the shape you want. You'd strike a line on the work following the wood strip. Easier to do than write, that's for sure.

A similar trick is to use two small magnets and a length of string between them. Then just run a pencil or the fancy soapstone pencil thing that he seems to have, and you have a perfect curve.
