Do you need to erase and reinstall macOS on your Mac Mini M1 Apple Silicon Mac? If so a few things have changed! This is a step-by-step guide that will show you all that you need to know to boot your Mac Mini to macOS Recovery & reinstall macOS Big Sur or macOS Monterey! I'll show you 2 different ways.
1. Use the internal macOS recovery = 2 Hours total reinstall time
2. Use Big Sur USB Installer Drive = 45 Min total reinstall time

Order of that you should follow for reinstalling macOS on Apple Silicon.
1. macOS Recovery
2. System Recovery - (Will boot automatically if macOS Recovery is unavailable)
3. macOS Big Sur USB Installer Drive - (External boot for macOS Installers is enabled by default on Apple Silicon)
4. Apple Configurator 2 REVIVE option - This option will reinstall macOS Recovery (retains user data on the SSD hard drive)
5. Apple Configurator 2 RESTORE option - This option will Reinstall macOS Recovery, ERASE your SSD hard drive and reinstall macOS

Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon
macOS Recovery is the built-in recovery system of your Mac.
You can use the apps in macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon to repair your internal disk, reinstall macOS, restore your files from a Time Machine backup, set the security policy for different disks, transfer files between two Mac computers, start up in safe mode and more.
Reinstalling macOS requires an internet connection. To connect to the internet, you can use a wireless or wired network connection. See Connect to the internet using Wi-Fi.
Note: if you’re trying to connect to a captive portal (for example, at a coffee shop, library or hotel) or an enterprise network, you might not be able to access the internet in macOS Recovery.

Thanks, It did help me. I had to reset an m1 mac pro. I used the USB method. I also used your other video for setting up the USB drive. Good idea Ramy, I should have timed how long it took with the USB flash Drive vs the Thunderbolt Hard drive. I know for sure how fast the TB drive is and it would be interesting to see how much slower the USB flash drive was.

Only factory reset Tutorial that worked, others kept saying no admin user. Mine doesn’t show the group drives thing but after watching I realized I needed to deleted both the Mac data & Mac hd both under the first tab, I tried again to reinstall Mac OS and it started working like a blessing. Had to go through this for dvi to hdmi display not working correctly. Hopefully I don’t need a new monitor, I got 2 old NEC monitors with great color reproduction was really hoping to do some 3D models on it. But it black screens me when adjusting resolutions and then didn’t auto correct to any working resolutions ( I’m hoping they add an auto-scan for best performing resolutions feature soon. Maybe it would help with screen issue woes & help users to use less cpu usage; while giving reasonable bumps to speed due to lower resolutions)... one can hope lol Also don’t have the resolution slider to get the entire screen to stretch and fit. will check if it’s back after I update. Anyhow hoping you could also do a vid to permanently fix non fill screen, flickering and black screens with m1 mini & dvi displays in one vid. Would be helpful. Anyhow thanks for the video man! It’s up!

I get about 3-5min install from USB, make sure it have a good speed for a real install speed test (I use Kingston HyperX Usb, 350mb read) - btw if you delete your disk in recovery mode and have under version 11.1 of macOS it can give you some issues with reinstall. Almost only way is to go EFI mode and install again with Apple Config 2. Love the vid gj.

On a virtual machine, it takes like 5 to 10 minutes before restarting if the ISO file is on the internal SSD.

Thank you so much for this video. I've been trying to do a restore using Time Machine using Command R and of course nothing was happening. One question before I try your instructions can you advise will bluetooth mouse and keyboard (Logitech Mx not Apple Magic ones) be recognized and useable? I did that using a usb c 3.2 and took 30 minutes to install, I was surprised how quickly was, and I haven’t got any errors while installing so it seems apple had fixed the issues on the beginning while trying to reinstall the software.

They did in 11.1! 30 min is very fast for a macOS install. Does not beat DFU restore but still very fast!

Hi. I want to understand what may have happened for me. I will at some point have to get a new Mac. When I tried to recover from a time machine save, I did get into the menu, no problem. But then when I tried to recover form an external, it told me repeatedly that I had to use migration assistant. Is this because I had not also deleted the data portion you showed? I'm usually pretty good with this stuff and was just dumb-founded. Decided to return no matter what because of this, audio sample rate issues I was having with my DAW, and some other small issues. Hi, I recently had error when I installing updates to macOS. It says cannot migrate user data and restart to recovery mode. I then hit restart and it boot to macOS with update installed. Hello Mr. Macintosh, I just bought a Mac Mini with M1 chip and i had a installing-deleting a application which is not %100 for m1 chips. After that i tried to uninstall, but the app didn't go anywhere even i deleted the files from Finder. After i called apple support and a man said EXACTLY same thing you said ( 0:01 - 7.23 ) My mac mini was saying the same time, almost 2 hours like your device. But after almost half of the downloading BigSur, my computer said 'An error occurred while preparing the update. Failed to personalize the software update. Please try again.' Please help me. @@Mr.Macintosh I failed :( I am stuck in the 'Create Computer Account' step.. It can't create an account.. Apple support is trying to help me to use my 2012 Mac book pro with apple configurator 2 to rescue my m1 Mac mini.. But the apple configurator has a warning now : 'A software update is required for this device. Restoring the requested iOS version requires a system software update'.. I don't know what to do cause my 2012 mbp is uptodate and the apple configurator is just installed so it should be uptodate as well.. :(

I don't get that message if I hold the power button. Unplugging my boot media, holding option/alt brought up the boot menu. Then I reconnected my boot media USB. Hope that helps someone having the same problem.

This is interesting and very informative. I’m glad those keyboard boot combinations are gone. I have 2011 MacBook Pro and I just got a new M1 Mac mini and I’m waiting for a Luna display dongle to arrive so I can use my Mac mini as a headless Mac with my iPad Pro. But until then, I’ve been wondering how to enter target boot mode to the Mac mini but using my old 2011 MacBook as the input/out controller. Connect Mac mini Thunderbolt to usb on the MacBook Pro, holding down option key on the MacBook Pro to load all bootable disk on the launch screen but the Mac mini does not show up on the list of available boot disks. Note the Mac mini is right out the box and have never been setup, logged into or have any accounts created. So how doe users enter disk mode or boot mode without a screen or keyboard, driving blind with a headless Mac mini, since we don’t the keyboard combinations? Lol. Impossible ask but I’m thing different here. Lol :). Anyway I was hoping that holding the power button down longer will cycle through some audio cues or list to enter a particular boot selection mode. So far I’ve hear the classic Mac boot tone, then I’ve single and double pulse tones when holding the power button to turn off the Mac mini without a display or keyboard, then the little light goes off.

Ded Ede, the new recovery mode is considered a security function. Remote attackers can now never reboot the mac to recovery. You have to have a person physically at the mac to get it to boot into recovery mode. I agree that this can cause issues for remote control or support but this is the way it is for now. For external booting, the M1 with 11.1 is having issues right now. You can only boot from a thunderbolt 3 or USB-C. based external drive. The M1 does not support target disk mode only Share Disk Mode. I've not tried to use another mac as an external drive, interesting idea I might have to try that.

But I believe I just discovered why it didn’t work is because the 2011 hardware is not supported by Big Sur even though I have it running patched Catalina. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ lol. But it looks like Target Boot mode can work with newer supported macs. I guess my only last hope is the arrival of my Luna display dongle so I can get into my m1 Mac mini. Also since connecting the Mac mini to the iPad Pro over thunderbolt/lightning yields no results.

Hello Sergio, the SSD256 is the top level SSD and you will not be able to erase it because it contains the System Recovery which can not be deleted. You CAN however erase the container which holds Macintosh HD & Macintosh HD - Data. On 11.2 forward apple will force what's called an "Erase Mac" which is the best way to factory erase an M1 Mac. This will reset the volume owner, force you to activate the mac for a new personalization certificate and reset NVRAM settings. STAY TUNED I will be going over this in a future video.

hello,I got MacBook air m1 recently and having several problems. when I booted it first,it prompted me to create a username and password. I did that offline since I had no wifi. After shutting it down for it to charge,I booted it up again only to be surprised when it rejected the password. It prompted me to erase everything since I hadn't been able to unlock it. Then reinstall the Os. but first I had to deactivate it,now it says I have to activate it and wifi must be on. Unfortunately,when I put on the wifi password,it still doesn't sense it. Only a restart button and a greyed next button. I still get an error that wifi has to on or a network cable to proceed. Kindly help

when I deactivated and erased it,it warned me that wifi was required for activation and proceeding. I am also doubting whether it erased anything without wifi. Also,the Mac doesn't connect to wifi.

Hello, try this. power down the mac mini. Press the power button once then let go. Now immediately after hold down power again until you see the recovery apple log and text under it. Click recovery, does that boot you in?

Sir thank you so much for your dedication, but no matter what I try to do (through recovery mode installation or usb flash way), the same message "failed to personalize software update" keep on popping, when i went to terminal and checked my version on the M1 mac mini its "1.0", when I go to the terminal and "erasepassword" they told me that there is no account to be erased. Using the flash memory method I am sure that the version of big sure I have might not be 1.0. I really dont know what to do...

@@Mr.Macintosh yes, i was finally able to re install it( i went to your webpage and it was a major helper) but now when I try to create a user it says that the usar name is all ready in use, no matter what name i use.

Does it really take almost an hour to install the OS? I’m coming from Windows environment where it takes at most 5 minutes.

Hi.. I'm having a problem with "search engine" on safari. I'm stuck with "Yahoo search", even if I do SafarI - Preferences - search. Do you think by re installing macOS, this will solve the issue? Thank you

Eric, yes but sounds like malware got a hold of your safari search. Should be a better way to get it out! I wonder if it's getting reset every time you change to something different.

Hi, My mac mini m1 is running on "Big Sur" (11.2.1) and unable to unlock my admin account. i am entering the correct admin password. but it says "my account is locked". I have tried to do using macOS Recovery. but i don't get the "macOS utitlities" screen when i long press the power button. Instead of that, it is directly taking me to login screen. please help on this. Thanks

Hello Test, this sounds like a new issue. Is your m1 mini filevault encrypted? Did the lockout happen after the 11.2.1 update? When you long press it has to bring you to utilities, but you are saying when you login press it brings you to the login screen?

I'm trying to install macOS Big Sur from USB. Now when I want to boot the device from the USB drive, it says "Security settings do not allow this Mac to use an external startup disk". I wanted to allow my Mac booting from external media but It shows me the error: "Authentication Needed - You will need to authenticate as an Administrator to change the boot security settings." And when I click on Enter macOS Password I see this error : "Recovery is trying to change system settings. No administrator was found. When I try to run the installer on USB directly in Recovery mode using Terminal. This is the error message. "-bash : /volumes/install: no such file or directory" This is the code that I'm trying to run for Big Sur. */volumes//Install\ macOS\ Big\ **Sur.app/Contents/MacOS/InstallAssistant* . Please help 🙏

Adenusi, try installing form a booted os and use the big sur installer app. It will prompt to transfer ownership and that is key to making an external boot disk work.

You are trying to boot into recovery by holding the button but do not see the apple logo with the text under it saying that it is hold for recovery ?

@vasyltokar4062 hmm can't tell ya on that error but I did fix mine I just had to barrow another mac book and use it to restore my Mac I use apple configureator

@@Mr.Macintosh thanks for replying,I have a mac mini late 2012 and i want to upgrade to big sur i even buy a 1Tb SSD for that,downloaded the files and have my usb ready following your other video,the only thing is that my mac can’t boot on dfu mode,i press and hold the power button just like you said,nada.I tried all the command and still not work,so i would be happy if you can suggest me anything else to try or another method that works for my particular case🙈Thanks already.

How did i even forgot the new password i changed? I did this to stop my kids from using my working MacBook Pro 13, buh thanks to Moe for helping me recovering my password and Apple ID..
